No-one in the press room knew what was happening at the time.

As Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe was speaking to reporters at the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday night, supporters were subject to "unnecessary and disproportionate force" from officers following their side’s 2-1 defeat against Marseille.

This will be the first time Howe will face the media since Newcastle confirmed they are to launch a complaint with Uefa, Marseille and French police.

And I would expect Howe to strongly stick up for the club's fans.

There is also plenty to discuss on the field ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton.

Howe threw his backing behind goalkeeper Nick Pope after his error in the 2-1 defeat in Marseille, but the Newcastle head coach will be pressed further on the status of his number one and the prospect of Aaron Ramsdale challenging him, as well as his side’s failure to win an away league game since April.

He will also give an update on forward Yoane Wissa, who is stepping up his recovery from a knee injury on the training pitches.

Yoane Wissa is sure to be one of the topics of discussion during Eddie Howe's news conference this morning.

The £55m summer signing from Brentford has yet to kick a ball for Newcastle after suffering a knee injury while playing for DR Congo in September.

As we've already mentioned, the Magpies have struggled up top this season, only scoring 13 league goals.

There's no obvious back-up striker for Nick Woltemade, with Howe using Anthony Gordon as his centre-forward against Marseille on Tuesday.

Talking about fixture rush, these are the nine league and cup games facing Newcastle over the next month.

A lack of squad depth is not something you want to hear as a fan at this time of year:

    • 02 Dec - Tottenham (h)
    • 06 Dec - Burnley (h)

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin says Newcastle's midfield may not be capable of performing with the required intensity every three or four days.

"When Newcastle's midfield works brilliantly they can bully anyone and are absolutely phenomenal," Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "Tonali is a fantastic player, a monster in midfield, Guimaraes has great skills, and you have the Joelinton power.

"They were brilliant against Manchester City but I don't think those three have it in them to do that every three or four days.

"That's basically the truth of it. They are very fine and strong players but can they do it to that level every three or four days? No."

  10. 'Howe's loyalty to Pope will be tested now'published at 09:15 GMT

Everton v Newcastle (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Nick Pope had a game to forget against Marseille on Tuesday.

The England keeper rushed off his line in an attempt to get there ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, only to be caught in no man's land as the former Arsenal forward nipped in and finished superbly.

The mistake has led to increased debate around whether Howe should replace Pope with Aaron Ramsdale as his first-choice shot stopper.

Magpies fans, let us know who you'd prefer between the posts.

Another away game for the Magpies.

Newcastle's travelling support haven't had much to cheer about this season as they await their first league win on the road.

All four of their victories have come at St James' Park.

    Home form

    • 12 points
    • 10 goals scored
    • Seven goals conceded

    Away form

    • Three points
    • Three goals scored
    • Eight goals conceded

It's fair to say Newcastle haven't had the best of starts in the Premier League this season.

Despite last weekend's win over Manchester City, Eddie Howe's side find themselves deep in the bottom half of the table in 14th, just four points above the danger zone.

They've won four of their opening 12 games and scored only 13 goals, with only Leeds (11) and Wolves (seven) scoring less.

It's been an interesting campaign so far for the Magpies, with some big highs at St James' Park, but plenty of lows away from home...
