The incident Harry Kane was referencing was this one from October 2019.

England's Euro 2020 qualifying victory over Bulgaria in Sofia was overshadowed by shameful scenes of racism that saw the game stopped twice and officials threaten to abandon the match.

Gareth Southgate's side strolled to a 6-0 victory in an atmosphere that was toxic in the first half and eerie in the second, with a large section of the Vasil Levski Stadium already closed after racist incidents here in June.

England debutant Tyrone Mings was an early victim, turning towards the home fans when chants were aimed in his direction and referee Ivan Bebek stopped the game in the 28th minute after Raheem Sterling was a target for further abuse.

After lengthy discussions, and in accordance with Uefa's protocol for dealing with racism, the crowd were warned of the consequences if there were further problems - and there was a further stoppage just before half-time.

England captain Harry Kane is also asked if he and his players were prepared to take action if there was any racist chanting tomorrow.

He said: "We've had a meeting and we discussed the protocols in place from Uefa's point of view. We try to not focus on it too much as we're focused on the game.

"Anything can happen and we are prepared, but ultimately we're not thinking about that. The Serbian FA has put out a statement saying 'enjoy the game' and hopefully we will.

"We're prepared to do what Uefa protocols allow us to do. We handled that situation in Bulgaria really well. We're prepared and we've had a discussion as a group. If anything does happen, we're prepared to do what's necessary."

  4. Tuchel expects 'a high-level sporting occasion'published at 20:14 British Summer Time 8 September

Serbia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

England manager Thomas Tuchel is asked whether Uefa discussed the racism protocols with the squad in case there is any racist chanting. He says: "The people in charge at the FA talked with us about Uefa protocols. I always believe in the good and believe we will have a high-level sporting occasion. I don't want to put a focus on it because I believe in the beauty of the sport and the beauty of the game."

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "We are here to win. This is why we are here. We will never be arrogant and disrespectful. The result is hard to control, we want a good performance and a top performance to reach our goal.

"It is a privilege to be England manager and I can assure I will do everything to be successful. It comes with scrutiny and criticisms and a lot of opinions."

  6. 'Serbia's strikers are super dangerous'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 8 September

Serbia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "Serbia have very successful sports teams. Their players play in top clubs and top leagues and always young talents who can surprise. We need to be very aware of it tomorrow. This is what international football is all about and we are happy to be here.

"I think Serbia play very flexible. We need to have quick answers and they play with high wing-backs, with strong crosses. And the strikers are super dangerous. The team is prepared. Hopefully we can prove the point tomorrow."

  7. 'Everyone is available'published at 20:01 British Summer Time 8 September

Serbia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "In terms of performances, not too many changes. Maybe some adjustments. We had an excellent camp and everyone deserves to play. We do the last decisions tonight and tomorrow morning, everyone is available.

"We are getting better against the low block. But every match is different, we have to take advantage of the spaces they show us tomorrow. It is difficult to break down a low block, no secret about that, but we have progressed. I am happy with the attitudes and I am absolutely convinced we are getting there."

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "Let's see how the game plays out tomorrow. We prepare for everything, we are in a very emotional sporting country - they have world class sportsmen, amazing talents in football - and will have quality. Our first away game together in a traditional stadium. I think the occasion will bring out the best in us."

Kane is asked about how he expects to cope with Nottingham Forest's tough defender Nikola Milenkovic and says: "I always want to play against the best opposition. As a striker you're going to come against some great defenders.

"It will be a physical game, he is a tall strong defender so I will have to find a different way of bringing the best out of me. Throughout my career I've loved any challenge and I love this type of away game. They bring the best out of me and I'm just looking forward to being out there and helping my team get one step closer to qualifying."

  10. 'We're always looking at areas to improve'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 8 September

    Serbia v England (19:45 BST)

More from England captain Kane: "Up until now we've been against teams that are happy to sit back and try to not make it four or five nil so you have to be patient. We've had spells where we've handled it well.

"Serbia are a really good football team and at home so they will try to press us higher up the pitch. As a striker in those other games, you know you are not going to get nine or 10 chances in a game so you have to take the one or two you get.

"We're always looking at areas to improve and as a team we can get better at breaking down low blocks but any team, no matter where they are in the rankings, if they go 4-5-1, they can make it difficult.

"Of course we have been looking to have won by more goals, but we have done what we need to and move on to the next one."

  11. 'A big step in the right direction'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 8 September

    Serbia v England (19:45 BST)

Kane is asked how important tomorrow's game with Serbia is and says: "It will be a big step in the right direction. When you looked at the group, this and Albania away are the two toughest. With the way the group is poised we know if we were to win we would take a big step in the right direction.

"We need to focus on what we can control and that's playing the way we can. It's going to be difficult, we know the challenges and that's part and parcel of qualifying for the biggest tournament in the world."

  12. Kane expecting 'hostile' atmosphere in Serbiapublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 8 September

    Serbia v England (19:45 BST)

England captain Harry Kane: "It's going to be difficult for sure. I've played here for Spurs quite a few years ago and it's a difficult atmosphere to play in front of.

"It will be even more hostile and they will try to make it as difficult as they can for us. It's a big game in terms of qualifying for the World Cup and we have to be ready - we've had difficult games before."

  15. Tuchel 'absolutely convinced' England on right pathpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 8 September

Serbia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

    Gary Rose
    BBC Sport

Thomas Tuchel says he is "absolutely convinced" that England are on the right path under him, despite them labouring to victory over Andorra on Saturday.

A Christian Garcia own goal and Declan Rice header secured a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win at Villa Park.

It makes it four wins from four competitive games so far under Tuchel, although he did oversee a 3-1 loss at home to Senegal in a friendly.

In those four victories, England have scored eight goals and conceded none - but there's arguably yet to be a particularly eye-catching performance.

"We're getting there," said former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Tuchel.

"There's a lot of learning for me. International football is so different to club football.

"I'm absolutely convinced that we are on the right path. We have three camps very close to show that we will create an identity and see who has a connection with who."

  16. They won - but have turgid England regressed under Tuchel?published at 19:29 British Summer Time 8 September

England's players went through the formalities of a lap around Villa Park at the end of their victory over Andorra, but the sight of their applause being aimed towards thousands of empty seats was the brutal measure of this dire World Cup qualifier.

It is traditionally the role of the visiting team to quieten the home crowd in encounters such as this. In a reversal of the time-honoured strategy, it was the latest underwhelming display delivered by Thomas Tuchel's side that sucked the life out of the atmosphere.

England, as they have now done on four occasions under Tuchel in World Cup qualifying, won to cement a powerful position at the head of Group K. A 2-0 victory against the side ranked 174th in the world.

It would take a collapse of catastrophic proportions for England not to reach next summer's World Cup, but the brave new era that was meant to be ushered in when Tuchel replaced Sir Gareth Southgate after Euro 2024 has yet to arrive.

Indeed, Tuchel has yet to stamp any identity on England, who have arguably regressed rather than improved since Southgate's departure following the defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

It was graphically illustrated by thousands of England fans heading for the exits well before the end, Villa Park's famous Holte End a sea of unoccupied light blue seats.

    Earlier this afternoon...

England Under-21s made a winning start to the defence of their European title with a comfortable victory in the opening qualifier in Kazakhstan.

Lee Carsley's side won the European Under-21 Championship in both 2023 and 2025, although most of the players from those successes are now too old to play in the tournament.

Arsenal winger Ethan Nwaneri, 18, gave the Young Lions the lead in the 18th minute with a low strike into the bottom corner following good work by debutant Divin Mubama, who is on loan at Stoke City from Manchester City.

Captain Jobe Bellingham, 19, headed in a second for England when he met a corner from Everton's Tyler Dibling.

Bellingham, the younger brother of England midfielder Jude, missed the European Under-21 Championship in the summer as he was playing for Borussia Dortmund in the Fifa Club World Cup in the United States following his £27.8m move from Sunderland.

Nwaneri almost added a third goal, but his curling free-kick was tipped over the top.

The 2027 tournament takes place in Albania and Serbia, with both host nations qualifying automatically in the 16-country competition.
