Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker on the Football Daily podcast discussing Liverpool and Arne Slot ."They only thing that they failed to do was to put the ball in the back of the net. When you look at Hudson-Odoi's goal it was an absolute wonder strike against one of the top goalkeepers in the world. It just wasn't their day, and what's important now is Arne Slot's reaction after having his first defeat."

  2. When will there be a verdict?published at 12:39 British Summer Time 16 September

Manchester City's hearing is expected to last around 10 weeks, according to media reports, taking us into late November.

Once the hearing is concluded, there will not be an immediate judgment. An exact date for a verdict is unknown, with reports only suggesting a decision 'early in 2025'.

This type of case cannot go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). But either side could appeal and a fresh hearing, with a new independent panel arranged.

The hearing is not a court case, so it is heard in private and the location is unknown. Parts of it could even be done remotely via video calls.

My hero from this weekend has to be Jhon Duran for Aston Villa. Super sub again. Very much a key impact player and what a goal to win it 3-2 after being 2-0 down at home. A big, important win for Villa, so he’s my hero for Villa.

For me, everybody looks at their captain as a leader and you have to look at Jack Stephens, he’s the leader and the go to person. Yes, it could’ve been a harsh red card, but you can’t tackle someone at knee height and you see a red card.

He’s the captain, he’s the leader of Southampton Football Club. For him to be sent off in such a crucial game, a home game. Regardless of where it is, unfortunately, it’s him this weekend.

Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker on the Football Daily podcast discussing Manchester United's Marcus Rashford: "I'm a big Marcus Rashford fan, and there's been a lot going on where we can only speculate. From a football aspect you can see that there has been a huge loss in confidence from a football aspect in how he's played and the chances he missed in front of goal.

"Hopefully this performance can act as the catalyst he needs to really get him to reach the levels we know and want him at."

Matthijs de Ligt scored his first goal for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag's side claimed a much-needed Premier League victory at Southampton.

The Red Devils went into the recent international break on a low after being comprehensively beaten by Liverpool, and needed to put in a performance on their return to action.

They survived a difficult start before a penalty save by Andre Onana from Cameron Archer proved the turning point as soon after they took the lead.

Summer signing De Ligt got the opener, heading into the bottom corner from Bruno Fernandes' fantastic ball into the box.

Six minutes later Manchester United doubled their lead, Marcus Rashford opening his account for the season with his first goal since March, guiding a low strike through a crowd into the net.

The double blow seemed to quell Southampton's eagerness and Manchester United were comfortable in the second half.

A bad day was rounded off for Southampton when Jack Stephens was shown a straight red card late on for a reckless challenge on Alejandro Garnacho.

The substitute then wrapped up the win for the visitors with a thumping finish into the roof of the net deep into stoppage time.

  10. 'Duran's goal proves what he's capable of when called upon'published at 12:01 British Summer Time 16 September

    Aston Villa 3-2 Everton

I was inside the box. I don’t think I’d ever try that. Credit to him, we talk about he should be playing and he should start, but there’s a person who plays up front instead of him in Ollie Watkins who performs week in, who out, who has done phenomenally for Aston Villa, but you have to bide your time as a centre forward and you always wish that your time will come.

Although, when I say your chance will come, you suspect the ball to come across the six yard box and not shoot from 30 yards. What a goal it was for him to score and it builds belief.

Not only that, I think it’s not that he needed that, but it just proves that when called upon, he’s ready and that’s not only when coming off the bench, he’ll want to be a starter as well. Being selfish as players, you always want to start, but when he comes off the bench and scores the winner in a 3-2 win, it proves what Aston Villa has in their armoury at the minute.

  11. 'Everton have to be very tough mentally'published at 11:57 British Summer Time 16 September

    Aston Villa 3-2 Everton

I feel for Sean Dyche to be honest, he’s doing a pretty good job there. He’s had some pretty good performances, but he’s just been let down with certain moments.

Defensively, they will be disappointed with a couple and then Calvert-Lewin, I thought he looked back to his best. Late in the game, just moments where you think he’s got to make that count and it’s just not happening for Everton and it’s not because they’re not playing that well, it’s just moments that are not being taken care of that well to be honest.

I think you have to be very tough mentally as a group, because those two things back to back, certainly at home, the previous game is a massive blow.

To come and start playing as well as they did against Villa away and possibly should’ve took points out of the game shows you how positive it can be, but you’ve got to hang on to that.

The clinical nature of the Premier League is everything, you have to take your chances and defend big moments and you have to keep practicing them.

Former West Ham midfielder Kevin Nolan on the Football Daily podcast discussing Jhon Duran’s wondergoal: "The camera pans to Emi Martinez, the goalkeeper and he's just like has he (Duran) actually just done that because it's a once in a lifetime. You know when you hit the sweet spot on a ball and it just flies."

  13. Duran's screamer wins it for Villapublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 16 September

Substitute Jhon Duran's sensational long-range strike earned Aston Villa a memorable Premier League comeback victory as Everton crumbled from 2-0 up for the second consecutive game.

The Blues were left shell-shocked when they fell apart in the final minutes against Bournemouth last time out and they had a familiar feeling on Saturday, letting slip a two-goal lead once more to remain pointless this season.

The visitors were on the back foot early on with Ollie Watkins seeing a header cleared off the line before they shocked the hosts with the breakthrough.

Dwight McNeil robbed former Toffee Amadou Onana of possession - which the visiting fans enjoyed - before the winger darted forward and drilled a precise finish low into the far corner.

Bereft of confidence, Sean Dyche's side were given little hope of a picking up a result but they doubled their advantage on 27 minutes through Dominic Calvert-Lewin's towering header.

But Villa responded before the interval as ex-Everton full-back Lucas Digne teased a cross to the back post for Watkins to nod in his first goal of the campaign.

Unai Emery's team begin their Champions League campaign on Tuesday and his side showed their mettle by restoring parity as England international Watkins slotted in from close range following Jack Harrison's miscued clearance.

And the hosts completed a fine comeback 14 minutes from time as Colombian striker Duran picked the ball up 25 yards out before walloping a dipping, swerving drive in the top corner leaving goalkeeper Jordan Pickford no chance.

'Forest was the performance of the weekend'published at 11:38 British Summer Time 16 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Kev, Nottingham: Hi Phil, after Nottingham Forest's magnificent performance on Saturday against Liverpool, what are your thoughts on Troy Deeney's team of the week having no Forest players in there? Choosing two Brighton players after their 0-0 draw against Ipswich seems a bit odd to me.

Phil: Hi Kev…I’m afraid I’m going to have to say this is Troy’s choice and he can explain it!!! What I can say for myself is that in my opinion Nottingham Forest’s win at Liverpool was far and away the Premier League performance of the weekend.

  15. 'I am very surprised West Ham let him go'published at 11:32 British Summer Time 16 September

    Kevin Nolan
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Former West Ham midfielder Kevin Nolan on the Football Daily podcast discussing Nottingham Forest's James Ward-Prowse, who's on loan from West Ham: "I must admit I'm very surprised that West Ham let him go. I get that Julen wants to bring in his own players but James Ward-Prowse is one of those players who never does anything wrong. He makes the correct decision and just gets the game. His set pieces are phenomenal."

Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker on the Football Daily podcast discussing the Nottingham Forest's win over Liverpool: "He (Nuno) got it spot on. Perfect tactics. And now looking at this Forest side, I see a consistent staple of the Premier League and you can say whoever they are facing will have a tough game.

"When you go to places like Anfield, and you're playing against the likes of Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal to get a result against them you have to be perfect. Any slight percentage out and you're not going to get a result against them.

"It's hard to even be critical of Liverpool because they didn't play badly, Forest just got everything right."

'It's been a great start for Forest'published at 11:18 British Summer Time 16 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

David: Phil, have the pundits underestimated how well Forest will do this season given the noticeable improvement in the quality of the squad?

Phil: Hello, David. I may have been one of the guilty ones you mentioned. I tipped them to finish 16th in my pre-season predictions but they will already be looking much higher.

They were excellent at Liverpool on Saturday and looked like a side very much in the Nuno Espirito Santo mould from his Wolves days.

They are solid at the back, where Murillo is a class act, while Morgan Gibbs-White is another fine operator in midfield with players such as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga giving Forest the pace and width Nuno likes, making them dangerous on the counter attack.

James Ward-Prowse brings experience and quality to midfield while Alex Moreno is dependable at left-back. Elliot Anderson is another smart signing from Newcastle United.

It’s been a great start and a real platform to build on.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and unbeaten Nottingham Forest stunned Liverpool at Anfield to end Arne Slot's perfect start as Reds boss.

The substitute cut in from the left and curled an inch-perfect shot into the far bottom corner, which Alisson could not reach.

This was their first win at Liverpool in any competition since 1969.
