In a throwback to times gone by, all League One matches will kick off at 3pm today.

Sixth-placed Reading travel to Cambridge United in search of their first league double over the U's since 1993-94 on the back of two consecutive league wins at home against Northampton and Mansfield over the festive period.

Nigel Clough's Mansfield host Bolton Wanderers who currently sit three points outside of the play-off places, but the Trotters should travel to Nottinghamshire in good confidence following their comprehensive 3-0 triumph at home to Lincoln City last time out.

Bottom of the table Burton Albion will be looking to build on their hard-fought draw against Huddersfield as they host Peterborough at the Pirelli Stadium whilst Crawley were supposed to host Charlton Athletic but that fixture has fallen victim at the last minute due to a waterlogged pitch.

Meanwhile, Northampton Town host Stevenage at Sixfields having started the previous two calendar years with a win, and Rotherham travel to mid-table Lincoln City.

Steve Bruce's Blackpool, coming off the back of a well-earned point at Birmingham City, play host to strugglers Shrewsbury Town and in-form Leyton Orient, who have won seven of their last eight in all competitions, travel to Bristol Rovers.

There's plenty of places up for grabs in League Two as the race for promotion couldn't be tighter - just one point separates second and eighth.

Salford will look to extend their winning run to five matches and push ahead in the promotion dog fight. They visit a Harrogate side struggling for form, losing five of their previous six games.

Port Vale are one of the five teams sat on the 37-point mark in the race to go up. The Valiants haven't won a league game since November, and typically struggle against Cheltenham, who are undefeated in their previous six meetings.

Crewe will look to keep up with the chasing pack as they host relegation-battling Carlisle who will look to build on their victory against Accrington Stanley last time out.

Despite sitting rock bottom, Morecambe have the opportunity to climb out of the relegation places as they host a struggling Tranmere team who have won just two of their 10 away games this season.

Can anyone catch Walsall? Mat Sadler's Saddlers are 12 points clear going into today's games.

But the chasing pack is where the nail-biting entertainment is at with FIVE teams tied on 37 points from second to sixth.

Just one point separates those five sides from seventh and eighth, while Chesterfield and Bradford in ninth and 10th are only three points off second...

    Bonkers.

There are plenty of talking points heading into the New Year's Day fixtures.

League One top scorer Louie Barry has played his final game for Stockport after he was recalled by Aston Villa. The 21-year-old was set to play a farewell match today but has a hamstring issue.

Runaway League Two pace-setters Walsall are also in action, looking to continue their incredible form and strengthen their 12-point advantage at the top as they face chasers Notts County.

Before we get stuck into the build-up to today's jam-packed schedule, some disappointing news for Wigan and Huddersfield fans...

The game between the Latics and promotions-chasing Terriers has been postponed due to "severe localised flooding" - and judging by the above picture taken near the ground, you can see why.

"Heavy rainfall over Tuesday night has made roads treacherous in the area, although the playing surface at the Brick Community Stadium was deemed playable," Wigan said in a statement on their club website, external.

"However, safety concerns regarding the public areas surrounding the ground and the strain on local emergency services dealing with a number of major incidents, which have been affected by severe flooding, led to the league fixture being called off.

"Access to the area is severely restricted with many access routes closed due to flooding, and the emergency services are unable to provide resources to support the matchday operation."

Good afternoon and Happy New Year to you all!

We're starting 2025 as we mean to go on - with a football bonanza and 21 games to get stuck into in League One and League Two.

It might be the beginning of a new year but we're expecting the EFL to be as chaotic as ever.

In true British winter style, one match has fallen foul of the miserable weather.

But we're all set for what promises to be another important day in the race for promotion and battle to stay up. Let's go...
