Charlie Kelman has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season for Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient claimed a battling win over Stevenage through Charlie Kelman's early header to move within two points of the League One play-off places.

The hosts took a deserved lead in a game of few chances when QPR loanee Kelman flicked Sean Clare's volley into the corner after a strong start.

The O's did not register another shot on target after opening the scoring and Stevenage grew into the game, dominating the second half.

Substitutes Harvey White and Elliott List forced Orient keeper Josh Keeley into saves as the visitors pushed to the end for an equaliser.

But Richie Wellens' side held on to claim a gritty three points that moves them up to eighth in the table with eight games of the season remaining, while Stevenage remain 13th.

When Kelman headed in his 15th league goal of the season to put Orient ahead, it appeared to be the first step on the ladder towards a comfortable midweek victory.

But by half-time the hosts had lost their footing. The first half had worn on to a game of few chances but with the visitors beginning to get players forward and time on the ball.

And the Boro were well on top for most of the second half, with Dan Kemp unable to take advantage of a poor backpass from Clare before Brandon Hanlan volleyed wide and Jamie Reid fired into the side netting.

Keeley, so often the hero for the O's, was forced into two big saves, firstly from White from close range in the 90th minute, before diving low to his right to deny List in added time and help secure the Orient's second win in a row.

A superb run of 12 wins in 15 matches either side of Christmas had Richie Wellens' O's sitting sixth in the table.

But five defeats on the bounce saw them tumble out of the top six as their season threatened to peter out.

However, they have once again bounced back by taking maximum points away at Blackpool and then Stevenage to move two points behind sixth-placed Huddersfield Town.

Orient will face teams currently in the bottom half of the table in five of their next six matches with a chance to make further ground back on their rivals before hosting automatic promotion chasers Wycombe and a mouthwatering visit to Huddersfield on the final day of the season.

Only Wycombe's Richard Kone and Birmingham striker Jay Stansfield have scored more League One goals than Kelman this season

There was an air of inevitability about Kelman's 12-minute opener - his fourth goal in three games.

The instinct he showed to head the ball coming in at such pace, matched with the precision with which he guided it into the corner of the net leaving Stevenage keeper Murphy with no chance, was of a player in the form of his career.

The 23-year-old is having by far his most productive season, with 19 goals in all competitions.

The former Southend United youth striker has made 26 appearances for QPR but is yet to score for his parent club.

Only Wycombe Wanderers' Richard Kone, with 18 goals, and Birmingham City's Jay Stansfield, with 16, have more than his 15 League One goals this season.

It was a worrying moment for O's fans when he went down off the ball and had to be replaced late in the game, but they will have been encouraged to see him walk around the pitch perimeter unaided back to the tunnel.
