Borussia Dortmund have lost three of their last five (W2) and both of their last two UEFA Champions League meetings with Atlético de Madrid, though did win 4-0 the last time they hosted the Spaniards in the 2018-19 group stage, Colchoneros’ joint-heaviest defeat across all competitions under Diego Simeone.
Borussia Dortmund have lost just two of their 13 UEFA Champions League home games against Spanish opposition (W5 D6) and are unbeaten in five knockout stage matches against such opponents (W3 D2).
Atlético de Madrid have faced German opposition away from home in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League on 10 previous occasions, yet only managed to win twice (D1 L7). Indeed, they have lost seven of the eight such matches during Diego Simeone’s time in charge (W1), including the last four in a row.
Atlético de Madrid are looking to qualify for the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the fourth time under Diego Simeone (after 2013-14, 2015-16 and 2016-17). The only manager to do so on more occasions with the same team is Alex Ferguson with Manchester United (7), although Carlo Ancelotti has also done so four times with Real Madrid, prior to their second leg versus Manchester City.
Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in their last nine games at the Signal Iduna Park in the UEFA Champions League (W5 D4); if they manage to avoid defeat here, it will be the first time they’ve gone 10 consecutive home games in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League without losing.
Borussia Dortmund have progressed through eight of 16 knockout stage ties in major European competition despite losing the first leg away from home, most recently in the 2016-17 round of 16 against Benfica (0-1 away, 4-0 home). Meanwhile, only one team has been able to overcome such a deficit against Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, with Juventus doing so in the round of 16 in 2018-19 (0-2 away, 3-0 home).
Atlético de Madrid have been ahead for 512 minutes in the UEFA Champions League this season, more than any other team. Along with Manchester City (51%), they are the only two teams to have been leading for more than half of their total game time in the competition this term (57% for Atlético de Madrid).
Only Ilkay Gündogan (24) has created more chances than Antoine Griezmann (23) in the UEFA Champions League this season. Including an assist for Samuel Lino in the first leg, Griezmann’s six chances created against Dortmund were his most in a single game in the competition for Atlético de Madrid (72 appearances).
Borussia Dortmund’s Sébastien Haller has scored 12 goals in just 13 UEFA Champions League appearances (11 in 8 for Ajax, 1 in 5 for Dortmund), boasting the best minutes per goal rate (72 minutes) in the competition’s history amongst the 415 players to score more than five goals.
Jadon Sancho recorded 12 dribbles in the first leg against Atlético de Madrid at Cívitas Metropolitano, the most by a player in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League this season. The last three occasions of an Englishman recording 12+ dribbles in a game in the competition were all Sancho: 13 vs. Zenit St Petersburg in October 2020 for Dortmund, 12 for Manchester United vs. Atlético de Madrid in March 2022 and 12 in the first leg.
