As a Gunners fan the ideal deadline-day signing would be Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace. Strong, good finisher that can occupy defenders, run channels and play in behind. Palace are virtually safe and have no chance of Europe. £50m might be enough to tempt them to cash in.

  2. Premier League spending at £290m on deadline daypublished at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

How much have Premier League clubs spent so far this window?

    Paul MacDonald
    FootballTransfers.com

Premier League club spending in the January 2025 window sits at £290m, significantly up on the £90m spent last winter.

Manchester City's spending which makes up £130m (45%) of that total.

In Europe, the scene has been mixed and, as expected, well behind the Premier League for spending power.

Indeed La Liga has been quiet to the point of no business at all, with just £10m being spent. And elsewhere any spending that took place was largely to make direct replacements for players that had been sold.

There are numerous examples of this; Frankfurt replaced Man City-bound Omar Marmoush with Elye Wahi from Marseille, who then raided Stade Rennais for Amine Gouiri. Rennes then went for Seko Fofana from Al Nassr, and Kyogo from Celtic. And then Celtic took Jota and on it goes...

Even at the steep end of the market, PSG's gigantic deal for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, worth up to £62m, was offset by Xavi Simons becoming RB Leipzig's record signing in a £42m deal.

And the Saudi Pro League have only managed to get two huge deals over the line - Duran from Villa and Porto's Galeno, who joined Al-Ahli in a £42m deal - despite threatening more.

But, as usual, the strength of the summer market continues to hugely outweigh the winter market; of the £2.3bn spent between summer and winter by Premier League clubs so far, just 12.6% of it has come from January deals.

So who could be on the move today?

Well we're looking into a potential deal for Ben Chilwell with the Chelsea full-back currently linked with a loan move to Crystal Palace.

The 28-year-old is very out of favour at Stamford Bridge and has only played once for them this season, against League Two Barrow in the EFL Cup - and even then he was a second-half substitute.

Chilwell wants game time. Will a move work out for him today?

  4. Staggered deadlinespublished at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It is probably important to note at this point that while the 'big five' leagues all close their transfer window today, in other European leagues it drags on.

Portugal and Netherlands will not close until Tuesday. Turkey is 11 February. Major League Soccer is 23 April.

So there is still a chance for Premier League players to get a move even if they haven't by tonight.

Manchester United's Tyrrell Malacia might be in that situation. The same is also true for Joao Felix at Chelsea.

  5. When does the window close?published at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

It's set to be a busy day, so let's do a bit of housekeeping.

Premier League clubs have until 23:00 GMT to complete their business, as do sides in Spain's La Liga.

It's important to note that other leagues across Europe have a different deadline time, but will all close today - Germany (17:00 GMT), Italy (19:00 GMT) and France (22:00 GMT).

    Newcastle United

I'm satisfied with the fact we've offloaded two squad players (Kelly & Almiron) for a combined £30m - but we haven't signed anyone. We're seriously risking stagnation now, PSR restricted or not. Forest breached the rules last year and it all turned out okay for them, didn't it? Still praying for a miracle right-winger signing today like PSV's Johan Bakayoko, but it would be a massive surprise.

Diego and Heaven are decent signings. Good to get Antony and Rashford out the door albeit only on loan, but we desperately need a striker or it’s going to be misery until the summer.

So far, Premier League clubs have been the biggest spenders in comparison to other European leagues - with over £200m spent:

    • As mentioned this morning, one of the biggest deals expected before the deadline was Marcus Rashford's loan switch to Aston Villa, which was confirmed on Sunday
    • Manchester City England right-back Kyle Walkerhas also opted for a loan move away from the defending Premier League champions and will play the remainder of the season for AC Milan
    • City have been the Premier League's big spenders during the winter window. They have already made three big-money signings - Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush (£59m), Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis (£29.6m) and Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov (£33.6m)
    • Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, 21, has joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in a deal worth up to £71m
    • Ipswich spent about £20m to sign winger Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa, who in turn spent £19m on Netherlands forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.

I think any actual football fan would want Rashford to refind his form and love of the game. No one wants to see a player performing badly. Hopefully a change of scenery, Emery and a change of squad can help him find his fire again.

  14. United sign defensive duo Dorgu & Heavenpublished at 07:55 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

Manchester United have, of course, already done a couple of deals.

They unveiled two new signings at Old Trafford on Sunday after bringing in 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal on Saturday and Danish full-back Patrick Dorgu from Serie A strugglers Lecce.

Dorgu has cost an initial €30m (£25m) fee, with a possible further €5m (£4.1m) in add-ons.

The 20-year-old is expected to fill the left wing-back spot in Amorim's side, a position the Portuguese coach has so far had to find makeshift solutions for.

The left side of defence was a problem at Old Trafford long before Amorim arrived with his back-five system, so the club's hierarchy will hope they have finally found the answer.

Heaven has gone into the first-team squad but may have to bide his time before his big chance; however, Dorgu looks to be one for now.

  15. Will Man Utd make a move?published at 07:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

This promises to be a fascinating day at Manchester United.

On the one hand, there is word out of Old Trafford that this might be a quiet day. As Ruben Amorim has said, the club do not want to make the mistakes of the past - and there have been plenty.

On the other, United are 13th and, with the squad as it is, it is difficult to see even a top-half finish - in a season where eighth might get you into Europe.

So can they afford to spend? Or can they afford not to?

  16. We will not repeat 'the mistakes of the past' - Amorimpublished at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says the club are "trying everything" to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes – but will not repeat "the mistakes of the past".

United head into the final day of the transfer window with speculation that they will further strengthen, even though insiders are playing the prospect down.

Deals for Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel and Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku are regarded as unlikely. Although, after spending £25m on Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu and signing Arsenal youngster Ayden Heaven in the last 48 hours, it is not entirely clear whether the club would have to sell players in order to fund further signings.

"We are trying everything to improve the team without making the mistakes of the past and also trying to balance the urgency of the moment," said Amorim.

"We know all of the aspects of our club in the moment but we are trying everything.

"This market is really hard on clubs to make some deals. I want to improve the team so badly. I know what the team needs. Sometimes it's possible, sometimes it's not. When the window closes we will see the players that we have."

  17. Poll: Will Rashford be a success at Villa?published at 07:44 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

Back to this morning's big talking point - Marcus Rashford's loan move to Aston Villa.

We are conducting a poll to gage opinion on the deal, asking if you believe the England forward will be a success under new boss Unai Emery at Villa Park?

Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United and helped the club win five trophies in his 20 years at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old bagged 34 goals in 63 appearances for club and country in the 2022-23 season, can he reach those heights again?

Have your say by taking part in our poll at the top of this page.

  18. 'Glasner could have said no to Chilwell rumours...but he didn't'published at 07:34 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

There have been a lot of rumours linking England and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell with Crystal Palace in recent days.

After yesterday's win at Manchester United, I asked Palace manager Oliver Glasner about whether the rumours could become reality on the final day of the window.

    Glasner could have said no.

    But he didn't.

"I expect one more signing on a position where we have just one player playing with his good foot there," he said. "Let's see who it will be."

With Morocco international Chadi Riad ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, Tyrick Mitchell is Palace's only fit left-footed defender.

    Chilwell is left-footed.

  19. Chelsea's Chilwell to complete Palace loan move?published at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

While Manchester United and Marcus Rashford's departure dominated the transfer chat at Old Trafford on Sunday, victors Crystal Palace were being linked with a loan swoop for Chelsea's England defender Ben Chilwell.

It was reported, external that Chelsea had signed off the departure of the 28-year-old left-back, who just needed to complete a medical before his switch to Sellhurst Park could be confirmed...

  20. 'It is not embarrassing' - Amorim on if Rashford does well for Villapublished at 07:22 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

Manchester United drew another blank on the day Marcus Rashford signed for Aston Villa, going down 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

A seventh home defeat from 13 games at Old Trafford in the league this season saw United slip back to 13th place in the table.

Only Everton and the bottom three - Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton - have scored fewer than their 28 Premier League goals this term.

Rashford has scored four of those goals, only Bruno Fernandes (five) and Amad Diallo (six) have scored more for United in the league this season.

"Humiliating? It is not embarrassing," said manager Ruben Amorim when asked about the prospect of Rashford scoring goals for Aston Villa as United struggle.

"When you loan a player, you expect him to play and improve so there is nothing humiliating there."
