John McDermott, FA Men's technical director and former academy coach at Spurs, is tasked with recommending Gareth Southgate's successor, apparently to be approved by Mark Bullingham, the chief executive officer, and Debbie Hewitt, former chair of 'The Restaurant Group'. I couldn't spot, among the FA hierarchy, an elite performance director or equivalent; the individual who understands what it would take to lift the next World Cup. The England manager should sit in an already established culture of elite sporting performance designed to make England men and women serial winners. Let's not forget, after the Iceland debacle, the FA tasked Sam Allardyce with winning the 2018 World Cup. So let's now, respectfully, make it known as lovers of the game, that we want England to win the next World Cup in 2026. 'Last 16', 'quarter-finals', 'nice try' are all no longer good enough. We want to see the right manager, structure and talent at the FA to achieve it.

After Bobby Robson left in the summer of 1990, England went through four different managers in 10 years, each lasting just one tournament (Graham Taylor, Terry Venables, Glenn Hoddle, Kevin Keegan). In the nine years before Gareth Southgate, England also had four different managers (Steve Maclaren, Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Sam Allardyce). I suspect we're heading for a similar period of turbulence, with a succession of one-tournament managers.

Potter, 49, said that after taking a much-needed break following his sacking by Chelsea in April 2023, he is ready to return to a position when the right one for him becomes available.

"I spoke to lots of teams and lots of clubs but it was recognising that journey [he had been on as a coach] was a long journey, a tough journey. Unless the right opportunity came along I wasn't rushing to go back into football. It had to be right for me," Potter told Sky Sports News., external.

"I spoke to a few clubs but it wasn't the right thing. It was important I was patient and waited for the right opportunity and took the time with the family to reflect and think about what I wanted to do. Now I'm in that good place where I'm happy to be ready and looking forward to the next challenge.

"He added: "I feel really ready, really excited to be back when the right opportunity comes."

Juventus have confirmed that France midfielder Adrien Rabiot will leave the club as a free agent this summer following the end of his contract.

"On the pitch, Adrien was a vital player to Juventus, particularly without the ball. His work rate could not be called into question, and he made huge improvements to his offensive game in recent seasons.

"Thanks for everything, ‘Cavallo Pazzo’, and good luck for the future!"

A lot is made of Manchester City's money, as if all their wealth comes directly from their owners.

Yet, on a day-to-day basis, they are a profitable club - and one of the ways they achieve that is by the sums they receive from sell-ons from transfers involving players who used to be at the club.

Burnley are selling goalkeeper Arijanet Muric to Ipswich, for a fee that could rise to £15m.

That means City will get between £2m and £2.5m.

Indeed, in a post from the highly respected 'Swiss Ramble' blogger on Tuesday, he said City generated £298m in player sales over the past four years. Only Chelsea have raised more - and only Leicester, Brighton and Everton got to half that figure.

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah says he "wants to improve and kick on" from his breakthrough campaign.

The 21-year-old made 33 appearances for the Reds last season and was called up to the provisional England squad for the training camp before Euro 2024.

"I was waiting for the moment for it to click and stuff like that, but I don't think I'm going to get used to what happened last season," he told the club's official website, external.

"I look at the positives and the negatives, and I just try to take it all in and try to improve for the next season really. That's what my reflecting sort of told me – it was just about how to kick on and how to be the best version of myself."

Quansah's emergence in the squad coincided with Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge and the former Bristol Rovers loanee is excited to work under new boss Arne Slot.

"A lot of my strengths can be shown in the system he likes to play," added Quansah.

"Obviously I like playing with the ball as well, so I think what the gaffer likes to do is a lot that I like. But there's still a lot to improve on."

  20. Wan-Bissaka in demandpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 18 July

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Aaron Wan-Bissaka of Manchester United celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United made it clear very early this summer they would listen to realistic offers for virtually all of their squad.

That does not mean they will all get sold but it does underline United's need to raise money.

Full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka falls into that category.

He is not a regular member of Erik ten Hag's starting line-up - although he played all of the FA Cup final win over Manchester City- and his contract runs out next year, when he could leave for nothing.

West Ham have made their interest known but, as with Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay last season, financially it needs to make sense for Wan-Bissaka, who will know more clubs will come for him when he is a free agent.

He is one of those players likely to be talked about a lot before the 30 August transfer deadline - with no guarantee he will move anywhere.
