  2. Turkey have 'talented maverick players'published at 16:08 4 July

Netherlands v Turkey (Sat, 20:00 BST)

Austria are the team that really surprised everyone, you thought maybe they can plot their way all the way to the final.

Yet Turkey, erratic, chaotic and emotional found a way to beat Austria with a couple of set-plays.

Turkey seem so highly strung, that it's quite difficult to imagine them being able to keep it together to go all the way.

But, they do have some really talented maverick players who really unbalance teams.

    On England's left-back issues...

Gareth Southgate didn’t take Harry Maguire because of doubts over his fitness.

Yet he’s taken Luke Shaw whose played no part in this tournament whatsoever and we are three weeks in.

I think there’s a feeling that there’s a double standard there, let alone limiting yourself.

Look if you where so concerned about the minute that Luke Shaw’s going to give, why not bring out someone like Ben Chilwell?

  4. 'Tournament seems to be very badly timed' for Southgate and Three Lionspublished at 16:00 4 July

Murat Yakin, coach of Switzerland looks on during the UEFA EURO 2024 round of 16 match between Switzerland and Italy at Olympiastadion on June 29Image source, Getty Images

I think a lot of teams could’ve beaten Italy the other day in Berlin when Switzerland came up against them. Switzerland threw a lot of things, that top club sides throw at clubs in Champions League games.

Players playing in hybrid positions, making runs that take lots of time in order for the chemistry to develop between players and they pulled Italy all over the place.

England have got better players than Italy, but they do have some of the same structural flaws that Italy have.

Switzerland are also a reminder that a team can suddenly click because this time last year, they were drawing with Belarus, drawing to Kosovo and they lost to Romania.

A lot of pressure is on Murat Yakin and yet timing wise, they’ve just got it spot on.

Whereas for Southgate and England, this tournament seems to be very badly timed.

  5. 'There’s nothing to say that England can't do that'published at 15:53 4 July

On teams clicking at the right moment...

You know that does happen in tournaments, where teams can have an absolute stinker in the group stages.

Italy in 1982 were terrible. Everyone was asking for the coach to resign, changes in the team and then all of a sudden one of the players explodes, Paulo Rossi - they go all the way to the final and win the thing.

So there’s nothing to say that England cannot do that.

  6. 'Switzerland are one of the best teams in the tournament'published at 15:49 4 July

I think Switzerland can [beat England], I mean England are going to have to improve as everyone keeps saying.

This Swiss side has players who play under top coaches. Players like Manuel Akanji under Pep Guardiola, Granit Xhaka who has played under Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso this season.

A lot of them play for Bologna, who have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 60-years and yet none of them seem to suffer, when they come to their national team.

They come together for their national team, they play like a club side and I think they’ve been one of the best teams of the tournament so far.

  8. 'I'm a big fan of his'published at 15:38 4 July

    England

England centre-back John Stones on the Swiss players that have impressed him the most: "I've got to go with my teammate, Manu [Akanji], I've seen him work day in, day out, I know how professional he is, how much of a good person he is as well.

"A lot of the top players are incredible people and he's one of them. I'm a big fan of his, how he plays the game, I love playing with him. It would be a good one to play against him as well."

  9. 'It is a turning point for us emotionally'published at 15:34 4 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

On thinking England might get knocked out during the Slovakia game: "It is only human that you have those thoughts.

"I have learned quite quickly over my career to shut that out, especially after one kind of iconic moment in my career against Aston Villa [Manchester City's comeback from a two-goal deficit to beat Villa and win the title in 2022].

"I was trying to use that in the game the other day to get out of that mindset and change into a positive - it paid off.

"It is a turning point for us emotionally, to do it in a high-pressured moment in the last few moments it is going to change a lot of things for us.

"As a team and going through the emotions.

"There is a great picture of us celebrating that goal. It shows that unity and togetherness as a team. When you have done those things you can believe you can do it better and when it gets tough you can always recap to these moments."

    England

Gareth Southgate, Head Coach of England, speaks with John StonesImage source, Getty Images

England centre-back John Stones on Gareth Southgate's 100th game in charge of England: "He's changed our culture within our team, which is extremely difficult with players coming from different club environments.

"To feel so comfortable within everyone's company, on the pitch; the humility, the winning mentality... he's very switched on with how we do in games, how we've done in our period of being together and being clear of what he wants us to achieve as a team, as a nation.

"The great attributes and qualities he has a manager - he's simple and clear with what he wants...what we're here to achieve that's not been done, to be here and try and leave a mark in this tournament is important and we have that goal at the end of it to do something that has not been done before."

  11. 'That would have only motivated him more'published at 15:25 4 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

England centre-back John Stones on the criticism Gareth Southgate has been facing: "I've only heard about the criticism that he's been receiving, I saw that some fans after the game were throwing bottles in his direction, I'm sure that would have only motivated him more.

"I couldn't tell you about his future or us even knowing anything about that as a team, or me personally. Of course we all have spent time with him and know him as a person and how hard he and his backroom staff have worked. We want to win for them, ourselves, our families and everyone in the nation."

  12. Postpublished at 15:20 4 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

England centre-back John Stones on Pep Guardiola's influence: "One of the biggest things for me is about thinking that I knew football before I played under Pep, I then quickly realised I knew nothing.

"How Pep sees the game and how he wants us to play football, it has had a big effect. Not only on me, but the lads who play under him.

"I believe Pep is the greatest ever manager of all-time."

On Pep's influence within England's national team: "To use some his ideas and tactics and get them across to the team and manager has been good over the years.

"It is hard to do that when you have not got the time, but over the years where we have drip-fed things in."

  13. 'Whoever steps in is worthy of being there'published at 15:17 4 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

England centre-back John Stones on Ezi Konsa: "If he's selected yeah [he is ready], I don't think any of us know the exact team or system yet. Whoever plays in whatever position or partnerships, whatever you want to call it, is fully ready. The standards that I've seen in training from every player has been incredible. whoever steps in is worthy of being there and hopefully we will produce.

"In the World Cup we had a run that we felt we could win and that didn't happen, we have to use the situations and learning curve to our advantage now. We've got a good opportunity to get further this weekend. I'm a big believer we've been in these positions before and realise were we are, the magnitude of things and what we believe we can do and put it into practice."

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

England centre-back John Stones on Jude Bellingham's goal: "Harry [Kane] was lining up behind him.

"Jude was in a great position, he has done it all season and he's come up with massive goals for Madrid.

"An amazing moment for him personally and for us as a team."

On Jude Bellingham's possible ban for his alleged obscene gesture:, external "I hope he is there, but I am not sure with everything that is going on around that."

  15. 'I thought we were going home'published at 15:06 4 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

John Stones on England's dramatic comeback to beat Slovakia in the last 16: "We need to keep progressing and playing the fluid football that we are used to.

"I don't want to discredit the other night, I thought we were going home up to 60 minutes into the game.

"To change the mindset and for us all to keep the belief it has a lot of power behind it - for ourselves and other teams.

"Everyone at home knows we are there to do it until the last minute and we should take great confidence from that as it's not easy to do in a high-pressured game.

"We use that as fuel, that extra mile and make it count and we did that."

  16. Formation down to what Southgate 'sees as Swiss strengths and weaknesses'published at 15:02 4 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    England

More from John Stones on preparations for Switzerland: "We train with everyone in different positions, even different scenarios it makes it seamless so that's the good. Whoever plays I have massive faith in them."

On the difference between playing a back three or four: "I think they bring two different sides to the game, two different outlooks for us over the years, opposition wise as well it causes them a problem. We're really fluid on both and that comes to us on the pitch.

"It's down to the manager what he decides to do, what he sees in their strengths and weaknesses."

England centre-back John Stones on Saturday's opponents Switzerland: "How they have played this tournament and the players they have got they've been brilliant, so it is down to us now.

"Playing against the likes of Manu [Manchester city team-mate Manuel Akanji] who is an exceptional player I am sure he is doing the same for his [international] team-mates - they have some great players and it will be a really good match up for us and a test for us."

  18. No-one 'knows the exact team or system'published at 14:56 4 July

More from Manchester City defender John Stones on being in touch with Swiss club team-mate Manuel Akanji: "No I haven't been in touch with anyone. It has been a bit of a bubble while we have been here and some days I wake up and I don't know what day it is.

"You're in a routine and I have not spoken to him [Akanji] or anyone else."

On his motivation playing for England: "To win. I think it is the biggest thrill I can get out of playing.

"That winning feeling, to create history for us as a nation and for me personally to do something that has never been done before and lift this trophy.

"I simplify it down to all those little things I have said. We are trying to create our own history and that comes with all the trophies I have won in my career."
