As soon as VAR appears on the scoreboard the club mascot has to start sprinting around the pitch. If they make it round before the decision is made the away players have to give £50 each to a local charity. If they fail it's the home players who cough up.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford has revealed fans turned up outside his home after he missed a penalty during a draw against Newcastle last season.

Bamford says he had previously received "a lot of flak" from supporters as Leeds struggled in the Premier League.

This included online abuse targeting his family which led him to delete his account on X, formerly Twitter.

It culminated in the fans' behaviour after the Newcastle match which left his partner Michaela feeling unsafe.

Bamford, 30, was speaking to Joe Wilkinson on the My Mate's a Footballer podcast about the abuse players receive and says he deleted his X account in March after online attacks "got so bad".

Dig Garbett: The problem with VAR is that the "clear and obvious errors" take too long. My thinking is that if within 30 seconds to a minute there is not a clear or obvious error, and not too many repeats or still images, then the referees decision is final.

  4. Uefa president Ceferin will not seek re-electionpublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport in Paris

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin says he will not seek re-election as president in 2027.

He told a press conference after today’s Uefa Congress: “I will not run in 2027 anymore. I was away from my family for three more. My family knew it first.”

The surprise news came barely an hour after Ceferin had been given the freedom to stand for election in 2027 at Uefa Congress in Paris.

The Football Association had been the only association to oppose the change in statues.

Uefa general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said Ceferin’s decision not to tell the national associations beforehand was not an embarrassment for the FA.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “We have a democracy.”

Disappointed but not surprised by Villa losing last night. Chelsea are a mid table team now but capable of beating top teams on their day. Villa fielding their 5th choice defence, conceded two quick goals again and then didn’t look up for it. I hope we have Pau back for Utd. We need a leader at the back.

Since the start of Unai Emery’s reign, Aston Villa have been a side on the up, kicking so-called ‘Big Six’ heavyweights out of the way as they ascended the Premier League table.

So much so in fact that for the FA Cup replay, they were clear favourites to beat one of those former top clubs in Chelsea, whose slump to mid-table obscurity has been well-documented.

In three games since Emery took charge, all at Stamford Bridge, the Blues had yet to score against Villa, who had two wins and a draw to underline their dominance.

How that changed in front of a stunned Villa Park on Wednesday night.

Last week’s first-half evisceration of Sheffield United seemed to have steadied Villa after their perfectly understandable mid-season wobble. However, questions must now be asked about whether that was the exception given it was their only win in the past five games.

Chelsea were better in every department and, after Newcastle shattered Villa’s proud home record last time out, it is two defeats in two in front of their own fans.

With Tottenham close in their slipstream in the Premier League, Villa’s hold on a top-four spot looks a little less secure. A win in their next game would be important to ensure any doubters, both inside and outside of the club, can see the season remains firmly on track.

And how fitting Sunday’s fixture is back where it all started for Emery at Aston Villa - a home game against Manchester United.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green speaking about Chelsea's performance on the Football Daily podcast: "You wonder if he’s [Mauricio Pochettino] just prolonged the inevitable for a little bit. But he got a response, he came up with the tactics, if anything, you say the team is with him after a performance like that and they got it.

"They got what he wanted, they nailed it, tactically. The energy, how dynamic they were, they were fantastic, they came up with all the answers."

Mez: Cup games are all about who goes through. We went through.

Nigel: Sadly the game shows we are on a par with Championship teams. Why can’t we sign quality players on long-term contracts instead of short-term fixes? Like Ross Barkley at Luton. We need a settled starting XI and a plan to have any chance of surviving. Another uncomfortable season.

David: Watching from the Trent End, it was obvious that the eight changes and the loss of Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates disrupted our rhythm. Bristol City put up a good fight - something for their fans to remember on their long late night journey home. How Felipe managed to keep going for 120 minutes shows the fight in the team. Well done.

Graham: Yet again we played six at the back, two in midfield and could not work out why they dominated the middle and could run into our box at will. At least when we go down, all the fans will leave and I will be able to afford a ticket again. Overrated, overpaid, underachievers.

Bristol City boss Liam Manning said his side were "terrific" despite losing on penalties to Nottingham Forest in their FA Cup fourth-round replay.

City's Sam Bell saw his spot-kick saved as they missed out on a fifth-round home tie with Manchester United.

"They have been terrific in terms of the performance again, the bravery we have shown, quality of play at times, the chances we created," Manning said.

"To come here and be the stronger side speaks volumes for the lads."

After a goalless draw in the first game at Ashton Gate, Wednesday's replay ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, before Forest scored all five of their penalties.

"It's the story of us a little bit at the minute, we have had too many games where we have put in terrific performances, created terrific opportunities and not taken them," Manning added to BBC Radio Bristol.

"Normally that is why you get punished. We have now played four games against Premier League opposition and not lost in open play which our performances have merited.

"The final bit for the lads now is getting over the line."

Goal line technology has been great. We need to move to automatic offside calls as well. It's insanity that VAR still requires human input to draw a straight line to determine offside. The main issue now is how VAR intervenes with fouls and handball calls. This requires the laws of the game to be simplified and explicit so that there can be no inconsistencies. We should not be arguing over what is or isn't a handball. It should be clear pretty quickly if the referee has made an incorrect call.

Harry Kane: 'I'm extremely proud' of Bayern Munich records

"He's better than Robert Lewandowski. No-one is thinking about Lewandowski any more."

Such has been Harry Kane's extraordinary start to life at Bayern Munich, that when BBC Sport spoke to fans of the German giants this week, it seemed as if they had already moved on from one of the club's greatest strikers.

Expectation has followed Kane since his arrival, and so too, it seems, have records. Since his move from Tottenham last August, the England captain has scored 28 goals and provided eight assists in only 27 games in all competitions.

Of those goals, 24 have come in the Bundesliga - the most scored by a player in his first 20 appearances in the league - while he also became the first player to score a hat-trick in his first Der Klassiker appearance, the match between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.

Kane, 30, needs 18 more goals in the 14 games remaining to beat Poland striker Lewandowski's single-season Bundesliga record of 41.

"I'm always extremely proud to have those sort of records," Kane told BBC Sport. "It's not something I set out to do at the start but once you hear about them and once people are talking about them, it of course means you're doing something really well.

"If you'd have told me I was going to do that at the start of the year, of course I'd have taken it - so I'm really happy from that sense, but as always, we try and push and try and see how far we can get."

I was at the London Stadium last Thursday and had to wait until replays at half-time to realise the Solanke goal was given because Phillips had touched it last - surely why can’t they show the incident on the big screen as they do with DRS in cricket as it will just discourage match-going supporters if they’re at a disadvantage?

Ross County have appointed Don Cowie as their interim manager after Derek Adams' resignation.

The 40-year-old served as an assistant to Adams and predecessor Malky Mackay and spent nine seasons as a player in Dingwall over two spells.

County sit second bottom of the Premiership after nine games without a win in all competitions.

Cowie's first assignment is a league trip to Ibrox on 14 February, with a visit to Dundee to follow.

Adams' third stint as County boss spanned just 12 matches and ended with a 5-0 mauling at Motherwell on Tuesday.

Manager Steven Naismith hailed Lawrence Shankland as the "best forward in the league" after the striker's 22nd goal of the season defeated St Johnstone and stretched Hearts' Scottish Premiership winning run to six games.

The Hearts captain showed his strength, poise, and finishing prowess when beating Andy Considine to Frankie Kent's long pass, before touching the ball away from Ryan McGowan and slotting beyond goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov.

Shankland also came up with his side's biggest play in defence by clearing Nicky Clark's bullet header off the line.

Those were the key moments in an otherwise scrappy match and ensured Hearts' brilliant run of form continues as they stay 12 points clear in third place.

"He's in the prime of his career and he's worked hard to get there," Naismith told BBC Scotland of Shankland. "He has a clearance off the line which shows his understanding.

"We're a good team. He's had more shots per game than any striker in the league and more touches in the opposition box. All that comes from us being a good team and the supply we give him.

"He's the best forward in the league and it's another example tonight of him showing that."

St Mirren "could have made it more comfortable" as they downed Dundee and strengthened their bid for a top-six finish in the Scottish Premiership.

Stephen Robinson's side are nine points clear in fifth place after beating their nearest league rivals thanks to goals from Mikael Mandron and Toyosi Olusanya.

The hosts had to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men after James Bolton needlessly flew into a challenge on the halfway line and saw red.

"Dundee owe Trevor Carson, he made a few stunning saves to keep the score down," Robinson told BBC Scotland.

"They're a tough nut to crack. They have a lot of experience, they know how to win, and we had to make sure we weren't going to be done by a set-piece or counter-attack.

"Nothing is done at this stage. We have a lot of tough games coming up. Nothing is easy at this level. We need to do the basics right, we've done that well recently."

Dundee remain sixth, ahead of Hibernian on goal difference.

Derek McInnes said "they are the best ones to win" after his Kilmarnock side dug out a fortunate late victory over Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.

Marley Watkins prodded home from close range on 88 minutes to the delight of the Rugby Park crowd after substitute Kevin van Veen cushioned a header across the face of goal.

Livingston were the better team for large periods, but were unable to take their chances as their winless league run stretched to 17 games.

Kilmarnock stay fourth in the table, while Livingston remain six points adrift at the bottom.

"The subs made a real contribution and that's what it's all about," McInnes said. "The squad have to be ready.

"They are the best ones to win because it looked so difficult for us at times. You look back on these ones, and it's the all-important goal that Marley scores."
