Liverpool v Newcastle (Wed, 20:15 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on whether Mo Salah should be in same discussion as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo: "It's so difficult to compare players with each other and it's not fair to anyone. Mo has had his own career and he has been outstanding. Mo has had some outstanding seasons here at Liverpool and we hope he can continue this for a longer period of time but first he needs to extend his contract. You guys don't ask me about that any more, so that's a positive!"

  2. Arteta speaking after weekend's disappointmentpublished at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time

BBC football news reporter at Arsenal's training ground

Mikel Arteta is speaking at Arsenal's training ground before their match against Nottingham Forest.

It will be the first time we hear from Arteta since the disappointing 1-0 loss at home to West Ham.

The main talking point since then is that the title race is now over with Liverpool 11 points clear and the Reds only having 11 games to play.

The question will be asked to Arteta whether he thinks the same or is it an unlikely chance that his team can somehow turn it around.

  3. Salah's Ballon d'Or chances will increase if team win something - Slotpublished at 09:11 Greenwich Mean Time

Liverpool v Newcastle (Wed, 20:15 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was asked about Mo Salah's chances of winning the next Ballon d'Or: "It's mostly about the tekkers, isn't it? It's a good thing that Mo is in the discussion because it means he is doing well and we are doing well but for him to stay in that discussion he should bring in the same performances as he's done for seven or eight months now.

"I think in general someone who wins the Ballon d'Or needs to win something as well so it's a great challenge that is in front of us and in front of him. What I like is that he takes this challenge by not only scoring a big goal and a great assist against Man City but he also wanted the team to win because his defensive work rate, especially in the second half was outstanding.

"I think that is what it takes for us to have a chance of winning something and if we as a team can win something, he will have a far better chance to win the Ballon d'Or."

Negative comments yesterday evening on the live chat from Leeds fans re. Daniel Farke's tactics. Really? For a club that sacked Bielsa and replaced him with Jesse Marsch, Leeds fans should be grateful for what Farke is creating and hope they don't sack him and replace him with the bloke who coaches my daughter's toddler football team.

So ticket prices rise meaning fans have to pay more, and groundsmen and cleaners lose out on a free bowl of chips on a cold winter day, but overpaid and under-performing players can keep raking it in unaffected? Something is rotten at the core of United. Summer transfers won't fix it.

    Christian, Liverpool

Man Utd sacking 200 loyal staff while there is no effort by senior players to offer to take a modest pay cut to help is a sad reflection on our wonderful game. Mismanagement and no loyalty on a grand scale.

Nottingham Forest's march towards Europe has been one of the stories of the season, but they might now be starting to look nervously over their shoulder.

A third defeat in four Premier League games marks a stark downturn in results, given that Nuno Espirito Santo's side won seven of the previous eight.

Forest fought back valiantly in the second half against Newcastle, but ultimately their first-half collapse cost them.

"Second half was better but unfortunately not enough. Too bad, too soon," manager Nuno Espirito Santo said.

"It's about trying to settle down, calm down and try to be ourselves. In the first half I didn't recognise our team. In the second half we were much better.

"I wish there was 10 minutes added on. We needed that time. We were on top, Newcastle were on the ropes. With 10 minutes I think we can get something from this game."

  9. Which positions guarantee a European spot?published at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time

A second Europa League spot is awarded to the FA Cup winners, and the Carabao Cup winners earn a Europa Conference League play-off spot.

If the FA Cup winners secure European qualification by other means, then the sixth-placed team in the Premier League takes that spot.

Similarly, if the EFL Cup winners earn a European place by another route, then England's Conference League place passes on to the sixth-placed team.

And if both domestic cup winners gain European spots by other means, then the Europa League place goes to the team in sixth, and the Conference League spot to the side in seventh.

  10. Can Forest hold on to a European spot?published at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time

    Newcastle 4-3 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Three defeats in their last four Premier League games have left Nottingham Forest precariously close to dropping out of the top five and a spot in next season's Champions League.

After an incredible first half of the season that left fans dreaming of a return to Europe and even an unlikely title charge, recent results means there is now just four points separating them from sixth place.

In fact, there are just 10 points between Brentford in 11th and Forest in third in the Premier League standings.

With 12 games remaining in the league, will the Tricky Trees' grip on a fairytale return to Europe slip away?

Years of buying average players for ridiculous prices, a succession of managers who are not up to the job and too much focus on business rather than the team. No problem, though. Sir Jim has come to the rescue and all will be fine once we have closed the canteen and sacked all the support staff. Don’t know why we didn’t realise all along that this was the problem.

Great shout from Mark @ 8:19, makes no sense sacking normal hard working people who are already struggling with the cost of living, when you employ close to 30 multi-millionaires who probably wouldn't even notice if you took £10k a month out of their wages. Clubs should look to their highest earners before kicking the regular employees to the kerb, the stadium can't function without them. Shameful from United.

Graphic showing the match momentum between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle

You've heard the cliche - now we can show it.

The above graphic, newly available via the Match Stats tab on every Premier League match report, demonstrates starkly how the pendulum swung in Sunday's ding-dong game between Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Essentially, the visual represents every minute of the game and shows the likelihood each team had of scoring in that moment of the match.

The more likely a goal for a team, the bigger the bar.

So in the first half, the glut of yellow bars represents just how dominant Newcastle were, obviously having four goals to show for it.

However, after the break, back came Forest, and the swathe of white demonstrates their pressure on the Newcastle goal and just how close they came to getting back on terms.

To get into the weeds of how it works, check out our full explainer here and make sure to keep an eye out on every game your team plays in the Premier League from now on.

  14. Four spots, 11 teams - how Champions League race is shaping uppublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time

Newcastle moved into the top five with a thrilling win over rivals Nottingham Forest as the race for European football took another turn on Sunday.

Eddie Howe's side went level on points with fourth-placed Manchester City, who lost to Liverpool, and are just three points behind third-placed Forest.

A last-gasp win for Aston Villa and a victory for Brighton put both firmly back in the mix, while 11th-placed Brentford are only seven points off the top four after Friday's emphatic win at Leicester.

Victory meant Newcastle went above Aston Villa, Chelsea and Bournemouth into fifth - which could be enough for a Champions League spot next season.

Defeat meant third-placed Nottingham Forest, who have lost three of their past four Premier League games, missed out on going seven points clear of Bournemouth in fifth.

How about the players take a pay cut to help out. A 1% pay cut would easily cover the cost of the free staff canteen and maybe even a couple of jobs. Let's see if kissing the badge has any substance behind it.

  17. Amorim talks to the media laterpublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time

Man Utd v Ipswich (Wed, 19:30)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has already delivered some memorable comments to the media in his short time at Old Trafford.

Today he has the issue of discussing his side's Premier League game against Ipswich tomorrow, in the wake of a 2-2 draw at Everton his side were very fortunate to get and drew scathing criticism on Match of the Day from Alan Shearer.

He must do so against the backdrop of another round of redundancies and the knowledge staff based at Old Trafford are losing their free lunches, in a move that will save £1m.

For context, each place in the Premier League is worth around £3m in prizemoney. The drop from last season's eighth place - which club insiders said was unacceptable - to the current 15th - is £20m.

  19. Media conference madnesspublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time

    Premier League

With a full raft of midweek Premier League fixtures coming up, Tuesday is the new Friday with no fewer than 10 media conferences to bring you today.

It's a fool's errand to promise coverage at particular times, but this morning we expect to hear from Liverpool boss Arne Slot, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

At lunchtime we will hear from Pep Guardiola about Manchester City, and Ange Postecoglou speaking about Tottenham.

Then later in the afternoon we have coverage from Manchester United as Ruben Amorim faces the media - that should be interesting given the news out of Old Trafford in recent days.

We will also have coverage of conferences with West Ham manager Graham Potter, Leicester's Ruud van Nistelrooy, Nuno at Nottingham Forest, and Everton boss David Moyes.

Plus there's Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman on England women facing Spain on Wednesday.

My fingers are already exhausted thinking about it.

Galatasaray said they would "initiate criminal proceedings" against Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho after claiming he made "racist statements" following the teams' 0-0 draw on Monday.

It was not clear which statements Galatasaray were referring to.

Speaking in the news conference after the Istanbul derby, Mourinho said the home bench had been "jumping like monkeys" and also repeated his criticism of Turkish referees, saying it would have been a "disaster" to use an official from the country.

Monday's match was refereed by Slovenian Slavko Vincic after both clubs requested a foreign official take charge of the fixture.

As well as the threat of legal action, Galatasaray said they would submit "official complaints" to football's governing bodies.

Mourinho - a former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager - and Fenerbahce are yet to responded to the accusations.
