Burton's Fin Delap celebrates with keeper Kamil Dudek after Burton's win on penalties

Burton beat Tranmere 5-4 on penalties to book a place in round two of the Carabao Cup following a 1-1 draw at Prenton Park.

Fin Delap struck the winning kick in sudden death after Josh Davison had fired wide to set up a meeting with Lincoln at the Pirelli Stadium next week.

Albion made the perfect start, taking the lead in the 10th minute when Ben Whitfield prodded home from six yards after Tyrese Shade's effort was deflected into his path.

Tranmere responded well, with Charlie Whitaker testing Burton goalkeeper Kamil Dudek from the edge of the box, but his strike was comfortably saved.

At the other end, Shade almost doubled the visitors' advantage, only for Luke McGee to keep him out with a sharp stop.

Rovers drew level eight minutes before half-time when Whitaker nodded in after Dudek could only parry Sol Solomon's fierce drive into his path.

After the break it was the hosts who looked more likely to find a winning goal while the away side offered little in attack.

Billy Blacker went close with a strike from distance, while substitute Omari Patrick saw a speculative effort fly narrowly over, but neither were able to find a decisive goal in normal time.
