Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth: What Iraola saidpublished at 18:39 9 December 2023
18:39 9 December 2023
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is a great result and great performance. You have to enjoy it.
"We knew we'd suffer to stop their front three because they are in a good moment but we knew we we would have chances because we are good in transitions and we'd have spaces to exploit. Everyone has performed really well. We deserved the win.
"The clean sheet was key. We have won the last two with two clean sheets. We were not defending well previously.
"We have 19 points. We need more points, we have players in a good moment. The players coming from the bench are giving us a spark of energy."
'We feel like we can beat anyone'published at 17:42 9 December 2023

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke speaking to PLP: “Magnificent. To win away at Old Trafford is touching for everyone really. One of the best stadiums in the world and one of the best clubs in the world so to come and win the boys are delighted.”
On whether this is one of the best results in the club’s history: “Yeah I’d probably say so and it shows the direction we are going in. I think I we’ve been building a lot in the last few weeks we are feeling confident, we are feeling great.
"At the moment we feel like we can beat anyone and that showed today.
“I think just composure really. The stadium is magnificent. It's easy to probably get intimidated here but we kept our heads.
"We were confident on the ball kept playing and attacked when we could and kept pressing through the whole game. We are just delighted to get the result.”
On the club's upturn in form: “I think we’ve just started clicking really. A new manager, obviously coming in to the team. At the beginning we were still trying to kind of find our feet with a new philosophy.
"We’ve definitely started gelling in the last few weeks and it has showed on the pitch."

These are the days you live for as a football fan.
A long away trip to one of the giants of the game, to a place you have never won a single game.
This will go down as one of Bournemouth's great days.
They didn't just beat Manchester United, they hammered them, and deserved to.
They hit the post, had two goals disallowed, one via a VAR check and were dominant in every area of the pitch.
As the visiting fans sang 'we support our local team' a lot of them will be heading back to Dorset.
It will be one of the best journeys they will ever have.

Bournemouth earned their first ever away win against Manchester United in all competitions, having drawn one and lost nine of their 10 previous visits to Old Trafford.
United have conceded 3 or more goals in five different home games in all competitions this season. The last time they did so in more different games at Old Trafford was in 1962-63 (6).
This was United’s heaviest ever Premier League home defeat against a side starting the day in the bottom half of the table.
Dominic Solanke’s opener was Bournemouth’s first shot in the first half of this match, while Philip Billing’s strike to make it 2-0 came from their first shot in the second half.
Since (and including) their first league win of the season on 28th October, only Liverpool (17) have earned more Premier League points than Bournemouth.

Manchester United were booed off after they suffered a humiliating hammering at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Three days after victory against Chelsea breathed new life into a campaign teetering on the brink of crisis, Erik ten Hag's side were stunned by a Bournemouth side who recorded their first win at Old Trafford.
The Cherries led through Dominic Solanke's early goal.
Andoni Iraola's men were fully deserving of their lead, and headers from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi in the space of five second-half minutes completed what must go down as one of the most famous triumphs in Bournemouth's history.
It could have been even worse for United, but substitute Dango Ouattara had a fourth for Bournemouth ruled out in stoppage time by the video assistant referee for handball.

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.
For this weekend's games, he takes on actor Dougray Scott, who stars in the new season of high-stakes drama Vigil.
Sutton's prediction: 1-1
Manchester United are one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League based on their recent results, but I am not sure you would say the same if you had watched them play.
Still, United's win over Chelsea in midweek was an important one for Erik ten Hag after their disappointing defeat at Newcastle, and the reports that came out about him having lost some of the dressing room.
I think there is a bit of a siege mentality at Old Trafford at the moment because of those kind of rumours, and Ten Hag has tried to shake up his team, leaving out Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial against the Blues.
They went toe to toe with Chelsea in that game and were more open than they have been, but I am not sure Bournemouth will allow this game to go the same way.
The Cherries are in decent form themselves, with three wins and a draw from their past four games, and I have a feeling they will pick something up here too.
Iraola on squad fitness, busy schedule and Man Utdpublished at 15:53 8 December 2023

Josh Lobley, BBC Sport
Andoni Iraola has been speaking to BBC Radio Solent before his side take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.
Here are the key lines:
Hamed Traore is still out with illness, and will not make the trip to Manchester.
On the state of his squad after a busy run of fixtures: "We have to take decisions because it’s a demanding game physically. It comes early after the Crystal Palace game, and we have to travel to Manchester. They have a slight advantage because they have played at home then home again. Everyone is trying to push and recover well and trying to get available."
Iraola gave an insight into how he prepares for games in quick succession: "Normally when you don’t have time it’s more about videos and tactical things that we can’t push the players too much on. Normally it costs you even more to start when you are tired [from training]."
He is not concerned about the amount of yellow cards his players have: "These things are difficult to control. If Marcos [Senesi] is suspended, we have to keep pushing. If the suspension arrives, we will deal with it. The way we play, we have to keep being aggressive and putting pressure on the opposition. It’s a matter of time before they get suspensions."
On United: "I think you have to be humble enough to know that you have to run a lot when you play against them. Believe a lot in your chances, in the quality you have as a group and be as energetic as we can. I think we have offensive players that can damage them"
Finally, Iraola says it is still not the best time to play the Red Devils, despite any perceived unrest at the club: "They come from a very good performance against Chelsea and they will want to build on this for sure. I think they are getting very good results and against teams like us they can be very efficient."

Manchester United have never lost a home game against Bournemouth in 10 previous meetings in all competitions at Old Trafford. They have only kept a longer run at home against Reading (12) without losing.
After winning just three points in their first nine Premier League games this season, Bournemouth have picked up 13 points in their past six games, winning three of their past four games.
Since the start of October, only Arsenal (19) have won more Premier League points than Manchester United (18), with the Red Devils winning six of their eight games in that time.
Marcus Rashford has scored five goals against Bournemouth - only against Leicester City and Arsenal does he have more Premier League goals. He has scored five against Bournemouth.
Bournemouth won their first Premier League game against United in December 2015, but have since picked up just four points in 11 games against the Red Devils.
'Small' Bournemouth continue impressive runpublished at 17:05 7 December 2023

Mark Mitchener, BBC Sport
"They came here expecting us to blow this tiny Bournemouth team away. But this tiny Bournemouth team turned out to be a very good one.”
The words of Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson, speaking to Match of the Day about how his team’s fans may have underestimated the threat posed by Wednesday’s opponents from Dorset.
Those Palace fans are not alone. Ever since their rise through the divisions under Eddie Howe, “little Bournemouth” have revelled in surpassing people’s expectations of a “small” club that took 88 years to even trouble the second tier of English football, and a further 28 to unfathomably reach the top flight.
Even this season, the usual national media predictions of relegation are disappearing into the rear-view mirror as Andoni Iraola’s side have gone from strength to strength, extending their current run to one defeat (away at Manchester City, naturally) in six games, while taking 10 points from a possible 12 in their last four encounters. Only Aston Villa’s last-gasp equaliser on Sunday denied them a perfect 12 from 12.
And while wins over Burnley and Sheffield United could be waved away as victories over two promoted teams struggling to make the step up, and beating Newcastle could be dismissed because of the Magpies’ injury list, Wednesday’s success at Selhurst Park was an impressive win away to a team in the mid-table area where Cherries owner Bill Foley aspires to reach in the next year or two.
Having kept faith with a winning side for a couple of games, the selection of Luis Sinisterra for his first Cherries start bore fruit as the Colombian’s flicked header set up the opening goal – while Iraola will feel particularly pleased with his substitutions after three of his four replacements combined to create and score the second goal.
While the fans are surely now looking up the table rather than down, a Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday turnaround may mean more team changes are needed in their next game at Manchester United – where, after three points at Palace, any points collected at Old Trafford may feel like a bonus.
Your thoughts on Wednesday's gamepublished at 11:21 7 December 2023

We asked for your thoughts on Wednesday's match between Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.
Here are some of your comments:
Crystal Palace fans
Trevor: I was more concerned with Roy's comments after the game. Being a Palace fan and season ticket holder for nearly 60 years, we never expect to blow teams away. I think it undermined every Palace fan. That was the worst performance I have witnessed from a Palace team. Defend, defend, defend - we were at home.
Alex: Fundamentally, the Palace squad on paper is very poor and the lack of investment from the club in the right players makes for a tough job for Hodgson. However, there was no playing for the badge or the fans tonight, and a total lack of commitment and effort all over the pitch. For that, Hodgson has to be accountable.
Adrian: Palace are not playing at all well, and their lack of goals says it all. Needless to say, unless the board start spending some serious money, we will be fighting relegation. We should be taking points from these lower clubs, but aren’t. Time to wake up Palace board, otherwise we will be in the Championship next season.
Kathryn: It was disgusting that our supporters booed at half-time and heckled our own players. We were doing the away fans' job for them - as they gleefully pointed out. Yes, the players and Roy need to do better - but so do we. Let's get behind our players on Saturday - otherwise the scoreline could be a bloodbath.
Bournemouth fans
Stew: The team showed they can sit back and wait in the second half and did it well. It was good to see Kieffer Moore show what he can do as he has not had much playing time. His goal - set up by the other sub Philip Billing - was first class and very clean. Bring on United. We will surprise them.
Clive: We are beginning to adapt to Andoni Iraola's style and it reminds me of Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa side. Ryan Christie must be covering an enormous amount of ground each game.
Greg: Now we are playing Iraola-ball, things are starting to click. This season will not be a walk in the park but it will not be a close call either. Hoping for a mid-table finish with a few 'aces' to come back to the squad. Onwards and upwards!
Miranda: A comfortable performance by a well organised team to keep our good run going. We took our chances when we needed to against a tricky Palace with skillful players, but which lacked the final ball.

By Sam Drury, BBC Sport
Little more than five weeks ago, Bournemouth were without a Premier League win and head coach Andoni Iraola was in real danger of losing his job.
Four wins in six league games since, including three in the last four, mean the Cherries are one of the form teams in the top flight.
They have put the relegation zone in their rear-view mirror and are now just three points behind Chelsea in 10th.
Efficient, not brilliant was Iraola's assessment of their win at Selhurst Park but as they held on to a one-goal lead in the second half, Bournemouth looked comfortable.
For all that they were not at their best going forward, defensively they were sound and after keeping Crystal Palace at arms' length in the second half, they made sure of the points late on.
A tricky trip to Old Trafford is next on the agenda but with Iraola's methods starting to take effect and the side brimming with confidence, there is no reason why the unbeaten run cannot continue.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraloa, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We were efficient today. We were not brilliant.
"It was very important for us to score first. Whenever you score first, you can attack the spaces more.
"They are not a team that gives you a lot of transitions but, at the end especially, we had some chances to score the second one. Luckily we did."
On recent form: "The players have continued working really hard and now we are getting the results. But from the first day they have been trying to implement what I have been telling them.
"Now we have players in very good form and we still need points. We want more points and we have to take them because we're playing well.
"It's easier to push, to train when results are coming but this group has done it when we were not winning any games.
"We have to continue taking the games week to week. We have a difficult one at the weekend against Manchester United but we have to give it a go, play to our level and see if that is enough to get a result."
On the upcoming game against Man United: "We have to recover well now because it is going to be tough. It's the third game in a week and the third one is always the tough one. We'll see if we have to change some players."

Bournemouth have extended their unbeaten run to four matches in the Premier League (W3 D1) - their longest such run in the competition since a spell of six games without defeat under Gary O'Neil in October 2022 (W2 D4).
Crystal Palace have won just five points from their opening seven home games in the league this season. The Eagles last had a worse start to a season in 2000-01 in the second tier (four points from opening seven games).
Crystal Palace have failed to score in four Premier League home games this season, with no side failing to do so on more occasions than the Eagles in 2023-24 (Everton, also four).
Bournemouth’s Kieffer Moore has scored his first Premier League goal since November 2022 against Everton – ending a run of 17 appearances in the competition without scoring. It was Moore’s longest streak without a league goal in the top four tiers since August 2017 (run of 30).
Bournemouth’s Luis Sinisterra has been directly involved in three goals across his last three Premier League starts (two goals, one assist), as many goal contributions as his first 11 starts in the competition.

Bournemouth continued their impressive run of form as they beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park to claim their third win in four Premier League games.
Marcos Senesi was left unmarked to head in at the far post midway through the first half after Ryan Christie's corner was flicked on by Luis Sinisterra.
After offering next to no threat in the second half, Bournemouth made sure of the win in stoppage time when Kieffer Moore stooped to head home the second after a sharp counter-attack.
While Bournemouth's form is on the up, defeat for Palace is their fifth in seven league games.
