  1. 'Keeping Kompany at the helm is crucial'published at 12:38 7 November 2023

    Burnley fans voice graphic

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never podcast, external

It'll be fine, we all said. Just wait until we get that run of winnable games and you'll see what we can achieve this season.

Four games into that winnable run - and it's four losses out of four.

It is easier to stay relaxed and focused when you are beaten by a better team. But on Saturday, we lost to a Crystal Palace side who showed no initiative to win the game, and who played particularly poorly themselves.

That is worrying, as we won't face an easier opportunity for three points all season. This campaign is tough - really tough.

However, we aren't cut adrift yet and it will remain tight at the bottom all season. Right now, it is likely to be three from us, Luton Town, Sheffield United and Bournemouth - with probably the lowest points in Premier League history! So, let's not give up hope just yet, as there is no shame in staying up in 17th on goals scored!

Another thing I didn't see coming this weekend was the question raised by the national press as to whether Vincent Kompany is the right man to take Burnley forward.

I find this question confusing. Are people seriously suggesting a newly promoted side, with the youngest squad and lowest budget in the league, should part with a promising young manager after just 11 games?

Burnley as a brand is unrecognisable under Kompany and I am not letting a poor season in the Premier League dampen my enthusiasm for that. We have a three-year plan in place - and keeping Kompany at the helm is crucial.

There's 27 games to go. And 17th is the aim.

  2. Your views on Saturday's gamepublished at 11:54 6 November 2023

    Your views banner

We asked for your views on Saturday's game between Burnley and Crystal Palace.

Here are some of your comments:

    Burnley fans

Mark: Burnley FC has been built on and must be about hard-working, stubborn resistance against all opposition. We must become difficult to beat and Kompany has to focus on keeping clean sheets. Much more important, for now and the future, than insisting on attacking, free-flowing football.

Steve: I can see what Kompany is trying to do - methodical, structured football building from the back - but the players lack speed and punch. Losing Nathan Tella from last season has left a gaping void in producing good chances and (key) putting them away. Why didn’t we buy him? He then went to Leverkusen and we spent more on players who are not as good.

Tony: Kompany is a record-breaker. The largest squad in Burnley history, the biggest spending on players and now a Premier League record of consecutive home defeats. What does he need to do to be replaced? Is it hubris by the owners or naivety? The team is not performing at any level and needs strong leadership urgently.

Steven: Absolutely brilliant performance, deserved so much more than that! How was Edouard’s challenge only a yellow card? It’s two-footed! Got to keep believing we’ll pick points up playing like that.

    Crystal Palace fans

Glen: It wasn't pretty but we got the points. Defence looked sharp and the structure of the team was very ridged, but somehow I think that's the problem when we try to attack. We look so slow to get the team up the field sometimes, which adds pressure if we lose the ball. Unfortunately, Joel Ward struggled again at right-back and looked slow.

Hughie: We have to be happy with that. It was effective - not pretty, but very clinical, with both goals coming from down the left following a press on the right. Outstanding performances from Ayew and the central defenders, particularly in the second half with Rodriguez doing what he does so well.

Steve: A professional away performance. Still lacking composure in possession and a cutting edge up front, but with Eze back and Olise close things will improve.

Paddy: Palace came with a plan and it worked. Roy knows his stuff. With Eze back that’s all good. Johnstone is a top keeper. And Andersen - what a defender. He was man of the match. Palace are a top-10 side. Happy days.

  3. 'Burnley have to be more ruthless'published at 09:53 6 November 2023

Burnley's blunt attack graphic showing they rank 20th in the Premier League for goals, 18th for shots, 19th for conversion rate and 19th for expected goals

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy discussing Burnley's lack of attacking threat on Match of the Day after Saturday's 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace: "It's that final bit of quality in the final third that they need at this level.

"They played some decent football and were in control for long spells, but they've got to get men in the box earlier. There's not enough options.

"They've got no Lyle Foster at the moment, who's their top goalscorer too.

"You don't get as many chances in this league and they have to be more ruthless.

"Those little bits of quality for Burnley when they are on top in games is crucial to turn those moments into goals, but it's not looking great for them at the moment.

"If you don't score goals, you don't win games and you don't stay in the league."

  5. Analysis: Burnley 0-2 Crystal Palacepublished at 19:45 4 November 2023

    Michael Beardmore, BBC Sport

What happens you don't win a game that seems, on the surface, a must-win? Or, to perhaps be fairer, when you lose one that appears must-not-lose?

The congested nature of the bottom four means Burnley still have time to salvage their season after such a disappointing start - but the clock will begin ticking at some point.

Vincent Kompany has plenty of credit in the bank after last season's Championship title-winning canter but his players need to start helping him.

If Kompany's gung-ho tactics against the Premier League's bigger sides have opened him up to criticism, he arguably got things pretty spot-on against Palace.

The Clarets unleashed 17 shots to the Eagles' four but were undone by one lapse of concentration and poor finishing.

It's becoming a recurring theme and with a trip to Arsenal up next, Burnley simply have to snap their home losing streak when they return to Turf Moor against, first, West Ham and, then, perhaps vitally, relegation rivals Sheffield United.

  6. Burnley 0-2 Crystal Palace: What Kompany saidpublished at 18:34 4 November 2023

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany to BBC Match of the Day: "I think it's very simple, at the moment there are individual mistakes. That's what's costing us at this moment in time. I do believe in a game like this you can still turn it around and give yourself chances. But it's a game of fine margins. It's a difficult result of course.

"Look, the reality of the league is what it is. You can't hide away from it. The performance was good, we had chances. We didn't score, we conceded very little chances but we made a big mistake and that cost us. That's the reality of this league.

"Putting things into context, it's not supposed to be easy when you come up. We've just got to dust ourselves off and get ready to perform again and believe we will get the results that we need.

"You create the chances so you've got to be doing something to do that. I have every belief Jay Rodriguez can score, he's been doing that all his career. And a few others are on that path to become those players. That's a big thing for us to say, for us to lose one or two players is a big thing. We need everyone firing on all cylinders to get those goals and wins.

"We have to keep doing the work, stay calm. I'm not happy but I'm extremely motivated. It's a good squad and staff and people to work with."

On boos from the home fans at full-time: "The frustration came because we conceded the second goal 30 seconds before the final whistle. And of course it happens because we're sending players forward. But the fans are always behind us, they've been behind us today again. After you lose you will feel disappointed, like we already do.

"I'm fully focused on these players. We need to make sure this team gets results."

  7. Burnley 0-2 Crystal Palace: Key statspublished at 17:36 4 November 2023

    • Burnley are the first side in English top-flight history to lose each of their first six home games to begin a season, whilst Vincent Kompany is only the second Premier League manager to lose his first six home league games after Mick McCarthy, who lost his first seven.

    • Four of Jeffrey Schlupp’s last five Premier League goals for Crystal Palace have been away from home, as many as in his first 12 goals in the competition for the Eagles.

    • Burnley are now without a clean sheet in 16 consecutive Premier League games going back to April 2022, it’s the longest ongoing run among current sides in the competition.

    • Crystal Palace have registered five clean sheets in the Premier League this season after only 11 games, the fewest games it’s taken them to do so in a single season in the competition.

    • Tyrick Mitchell has scored just his second ever Premier League goal, and his first since May 2021 against Aston Villa, 902 days ago.

    Have your say image

Burnley became the first team in English top-flight history to lose their first six home games of a season as they were beaten by Crystal Palace at Turf Moor.

Jeffrey Schlupp slid home Jordan Ayew's ball across the face of the Burnley goal to punish Jordan Beyer's error and put Palace ahead.

They sealed the points on the break in stoppage time as substitute Eberechi Eze teed up Tyrick Mitchell to steer beyond James Trafford and keep the Clarets rooted in the Premier League's bottom three, in 19th place.

The loss set a new unwanted club record of eight successive top-flight home defeats for Burnley, who also lost their final two games at Turf Moor when they were relegated from the Premier League in 2021-22.

Roy Hodgson's Palace, meanwhile, climb into the top half of the table, up to 10th, bouncing back after defeats by Newcastle and Tottenham.

  9. Burnley v Crystal Palace: Sutton's predictionspublished at 11:08 4 November 2023

    Sutton's Predictions image

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

This week, he takes on singer-songwriter Willie J Healey, who is a Chelsea fan.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Burnley have lost five out of five at home so they are desperate for something, anything, here.

The Clarets had a tough start in terms of who they have played early on, and everyone was waiting for the run of fixtures they are into now to see if they would kick on.

They have lost their past two league games, against Brentford and Bournemouth, so they haven't kicked on - and it's not going to be any easier for them against a pragmatic Palace side.

I don't fancy Vincent Kompany's team defensively and I don't think they will keep their first Premier League clean sheet of the season here, even against Palace.

The Eagles don't score many goals - they have managed only eight in their first 10 league games - but I feel sorry for their manager Roy Hodgson because he has badly missed Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise.

Eze and Olise are Palace's best attacking talents and the good news for them is that they are both back in training and should be available soon.

This is going to be an interesting game because Hodgson's side are so well drilled. Burnley will have a go at them, so could Palace exploit that? This smells of a draw to me.

    Willie's prediction: 1-1

This is a tough one to call and it feels like a big game for Burnley. I really like Kompany's approach and I really want him to do well, but it's not really working at the moment.

I'm going to go for another draw - Palace are doing alright and I don't see there being loads of goals.

  10. Kompany on bouncing back, Hodgson and survival hopespublished at 11:40 3 November 2023

    Millie Sian, BBC Sport

Vincent Kompany has been speaking to the media before Burnley play Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Kompany wants to bounce back from the midweek Carabao Cup defeat: "Every game you have to put yourself back in a frame of mind where you believe that you're going to produce a performance and get the result. I think sometimes a quick turnaround is not such a bad thing."

    • Given Saturday's game will be the battle of the current youngest and oldest Premier League managers, Kompany says he can see "the passion" Hodgson still has for management.

    • He added: "Once you're a manager, it's a way of staying young because age does not matter after all. It's the players and how you transmit the energy to them. I think to have longevity in doing that is inspiring."

    • In terms of injury concerns, there are still "no signs of improvement" for forward Lyle Foster and he will not be available before the international break. Aaron Ramsey has picked up a knock and will need time to recover.

    • Kompany believes "the bar has been raised considerably" since he played in the league: "If you look at the amount of investment that the teams at the bottom have put into their squads in the last couple of years, that wouldn't have been the case when I left the league four years ago."

    • He added: "That means the level is getting better, which is great for the Premier League, but it means your first year in the Premier League is probably harder than it has ever been."

    • Surviving in the Premier League this season would be "of equal order" to winning the Championship last season, says Kompany, who views staying up as a "necessary step for the club".

  11. Burnley v Crystal Palace: Pick of the statspublished at 15:01 2 November 2023

    • Only Sheffield United (seven) have scored fewer goals than both Burnley and Crystal Palace (eight each) in the Premier League this season. Burnley also have the second-lowest xG so far this term (8.6), while Palace have the lowest shot conversion rate of any side (6.3%).

    • After losing four consecutive league games against Crystal Palace between 2018 and 2019, Burnley are now unbeaten in their last five against the Eagles.

    • Crystal Palace have lost their last two Premier League games, as many as they had in their previous 11. They last lost three in a row in March.

    • Burnley have lost all five of their Premier League home games this season – they could become the first team in English top-flight history to lose each of their first six in a campaign.

    • Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew has won more fouls than any other player in the Premier League this season (34), although no player has committed more fouls than the Ghanaian (20).

  12. 'Mistakes cost at this level' - Kompanypublished at 07:22 2 November 2023

Vincent Kompany after Burnley exited the Carabao Cup in a 3-0 defeat at Everton:

"The first half was good but then mistakes cost at this level. You are in the Premier League and when you get promoted it is not supposed to be easy, you are still getting to that level. We are experiencing that now. It is part of what you have to deal with and you have to go again.

"There is such a huge gap between the Championship and Premier League. It is the motivation to belong there. The level of the Championship was similar to the Belgian league, division 10 or 12 in Europe, and then to the highest in the world. That is the exciting part and you have to stay calm with the team to get there.

"You don't accept it. Was the performance bad? No. The worrying thing would be not having the belief in the squad, but the hardcore, relentless work is what you have to live for every moment in the game. I probably don't look as defeated but I can put it into context. I would be naive to start this season not expecting these moments."

  13. Facing Burnley will be 'special' for Dyche - Kompanypublished at 08:20 1 November 2023

    Sean DycheImage source, Getty Images

Vincent Kompany believes it will be a "special moment" for Sean Dyche when he faces Burnley for the first time since leaving the club.

Dyche was sacked by the Clarets in April 2022 after 425 games in charge. On Wednesday, his Everton side host Kompany's men in a Carabao Cup last-16 tie.

Speaking before the game, Kompany said: "It's going to be a good moment for him. I can relate to when I played Manchester City for the first time.

"It’s always a special moment and in the end this club in general has always been a club with a lot of stability.

"He used the time he had really well, got the team in the Premier League and got them back up again. It’s a beautiful club to be a part of."

Kompany is not thinking about squad rotation for the match and wants his players to be up for the fight in the cups as well as the Premier League.

"We definitely have enough players to benefit from this game," he said.

"It’s an opportunity for sure in terms of getting the boots on and getting back out on the grass. That’s the best way to talk. In the end, whoever plays, it’s still the team talking and sending a message.

"If I was them, I would want to be back out on the grass as quickly as possible."

Kompany feels his side were on the wrong end of several decisions in Saturday's defeat by Bournemouth and says bouncing back from moments like that are what defines a player.

He said: "We’ve always spoken about how in tough moments, you show who you really are. That’s so important for me. We’ll learn who people really are.

"But I don’t need to be convinced by a lot of them. I know them, I’ve seen them and I know how they react - and I know they are going to roll up their sleeves and go again."

  14. When is the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw?published at 15:15 31 October 2023

General view of league cup draw ballsImage source, Getty Images

The fourth round of the Carabao Cup takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday with eight ties being played across the two nights.

Those ties will take place in the week commencing 18 December.

The quarter-final draw can be followed live on BBC Radio 5 Live after the match at Old Trafford and on the BBC Sport website live text coverage of the games.

  15. 'Hard to see anything other than a return to the Championship'published at 12:56 31 October 2023

    Burnley fan's voice graphic

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never podcast, external

What on earth has happened to Burnley?

We knew the step up would be tough. Of course we did. We’re not naive. But the digression from the dynamic and exciting team that tore up the Championship last year is extreme.

Gone is the shape, the attacking threat, the desire, the strength. Instead we look a shell of a team, one lacking any obvious identity or plan.

We failed to strengthen either full-back position, yet persist with playing the inverted V (or, at least, trying to). Our defence is the worst I have seen in eight years of Premier League football. Our midfield struggles to compete. We don’t attack.

And, most importantly, we don’t seem to be learning any lessons.

Each week the team is tinkered with. New plans are tried. And all with the same result. We have zero points from eight after going behind this season. That is worrying.

After realising that Sander Berge is highly effective in the No. 10 role, Kompany put him back as a defensive central midfielder and, quite frankly, he would be more effective in the stands as a steward than there.

James Trafford is undoubtedly a talent of huge potential but he is struggling with his distribution and needs to be dropped for his own good right now.

We are told that we got promoted two years ahead of schedule, and that the players we have are being cultivated for a strong Premier League showing in maybe four years’ time. Great, no problem.

But then why not change the plan when we did get promoted ahead of schedule? Bring in a couple of strong, experienced players. Have a back-up plan for Ian Maatsen and Nathan Tella. Just… be flexible.

It’s hard to see anything right now other than a return to the Championship. Which, to be clear, isn’t a problem (at least, not whilst the EFL remains VAR-free!).

But Burnley Football Club has always been known as one who will fight and fight with pride.

I’d like to see that at some point.
