  1. 'Burnley showed what they can do when teams let them have the ball'published at 13:01 28 September 2023

    Michael Brown pundit banner

When the season set off, we were saying Burnley looked the better equipped of the promoted teams to stay up in the Premier League.

Since they got relegated, they have completely changed their squad and have very little experience. But they keep possession really well - they showed that against Manchester United last weekend.

I watched them play their second string at Salford on Tuesday and they played really well. They have got some great young attackers and what they did to Salford, they can do to teams who let them have the ball.

Their recruitment has been good and Vincent Kompany really loves a wide player. They just keep finding them!

It is always a challenge when you come up to the Premier League and it's all about the details. Burnley will be looking at Wolves, Everton and teams like that to see if they can get past them.

They just have to keep grinding and hope the next result goes their way.

  3. Kompany excited by Odobert future after Salford winpublished at 15:36 27 September 2023

    Wilson OdobertImage source, Getty Images

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany says it is "only a matter of time" until Wilson Odobert makes an impact in the first team after an impressive full debut against Salford on Tuesday.

Odobert, 18, scored the final goal in a 4-0 rout in the Carabao Cup third round tie at the Peninsula Stadium.

The French winger joined from Troyes in the summer, and Kompany is expecting big things from the teenager this season.

"We talk about the team settling and stuff and as I've told you, some of the guys who will be the heroes for us this season, you don't see them but I see them in training and we have to be prepared for them to come into the team," Kompany said.

"Guys like Wilson are these type of guys. You can see the talent. It's a matter of time. Is it tomorrow? Is it in a week or a month's time? We don't know. We'll go with them.

"Just like Luca Koleosho, we've some exciting players and hopefully they'll be able to show it very soon for us. We'll need it."

  4. Burnley and Zaroury gain morale-boosting winpublished at 12:01 27 September 2023

    Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport

Anass Zaroury played a pivotal role in Burnley's Championship title triumph last season, with six goals and six assists in 34 games.

The 22-year-old has suffered a frustrating start to this campaign, sent off in the opening defeat by champions Manchester City and playing just 27 minutes in the league since.

But the Morocco international showcased his talent and displayed the potential which may well see him play an integral part for the Clarets as the season goes on with a hand in all four goals in Tuesday's Carabao Cup thrashing of Salford.

Burnley travel to Newcastle United in the league on Saturday, followed by a crucial game at Luton Town in midweek, and the midfielder will be hoping to cement his place back in the first team.

Vincent Kompany's men are without a win in the top flight this season and although this result came against League Two strugglers, it will be a morale-boosting one for both Zaroury and club.

  5. Burnley win at Salford 'just breeds confidence'published at 09:46 27 September 2023

Burnley players celebrateImage source, PA Media

Burnley's dominant win at Salford City in the Carabao Cup vindicates Vincent Kompany's approach, says former Premier League midfielder Leon Osman.

The Clarets romped to the Championship title last season, but have found things tough on their return to the Premier League, taking just one point from their opening five games.

Kompany rang the changes against the League Two side but the 11 replacements cruised past their opponents.

"It reiterates what Kompany will have been telling them," he said. "He will have said they are a top team and have been competitive in most games this season. That they are still well above the leagues below them.

"To get all those goals, particularly with players scoring their firsts for the club, is huge as it will just breed confidence.

"Perhaps they have lacked a cutting edge at the top end of the pitch, but they have stepped up a huge level. Now he will want them to do [what they did against Salford] in the Premier League."

  6. 'We kept it how it is supposed to be'published at 07:56 27 September 2023

Vincent Kompany on Burnley's comfortable win at Salford City in the Carabao Cup third round after he changed his entire starting XI from the side that lost to Manchester United on Saturday:

"We can put this result in context. We know we're the Premier League team - we're supposed to win, we're supposed to put in a performance - but it's easier said than done, especially when you have 11 changes.

"We showed good discipline, a professional performance. We got the goals and we got the clean sheet. We put it behind us now and focus on the Premier League and the next round.

"Midweek, away from home - I've been in the game long enough to know it can be a different game and we kept it how it was supposed to be."

On scoring four: "Goals [have been hard to come by], yes, but I think we've had chances. For a newly promoted team you're not going to go into the Premier League and all of a sudden start scoring two or three a game.

"But we're just delighted for the forwards to have scored some goals and for a lot of new players as well to be on the scoresheet. That's something that's going to matter this season."

  7. 'To stay up you need to get more than a point per game'published at 15:09 26 September 2023

Former Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin speaking to BBC Sport: "The bottom three in the Premier League looks ominous for those who support the underdogs.

"Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton Town are marooned on a single point each, which is worrying this early.

"It is hard enough staying in the Premier League after coming up, but giving all the other sides a start is the worst of all possible worlds.

"To stay up, you need to get more than a point per game throughout the season which already looks like a tall order if you only have one point from the first five or six games.

"There is however the outstanding fixture which wasn't played yet, Luton v Burnley at the Hatters' stadium on 3 October. The winner will have a big advantage going forward.

"For all the excitement at the top end, Luton's draw against Wolves was my own personal highlight of the Premier League weekend.

"I couldn't cope with them being on zero points, as that doughnut was beginning to look embarrassing. Maybe this precious point will give them the lift they need…maybe."

  8. 'Clarets need to focus on the controllables'published at 12:54 26 September 2023

    Burnley fans voice graphic

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never podcast, external

The painful reality of Burnley's cruel opening fixtures hit home about 45 minutes into the game against Manchester United.

On top and dominating the pace and flow of the game, we witness an absolute worldie leaving the boot of Bruno Fernandes and Burnley are consigned to their fourth successive home defeat of the season.

Five games, one point, 14 goals conceded.

If the Premier League feels unfair, it's because it probably is.

Global headlines will tell you that United are in a crisis, under-performing and having a terrible start to the season. We saw some of that at Turf Moor – indeed I am not sure I have ever seen Burnley narrow the gap in terms of quality and performance quite so much – but the top sides in the league have world-class players who can pull a moment of magic out of nowhere and steal the game from you.

But is that not what Burnley did last year in the Championship? We are just at the opposite end of the food chain this season.

We need to focus on our controllables. Those aspects we can manage.

Does Lyle Foster make a difference if he doesn’t pick up a needless suspension? Undoubtedly. Should Burnley look to bring in more strikers and experience in January? Possibly.

Right now, though, the focus must remain on the fact that four or five of our games so far have been against sides who will finish in the top six. We are not yet cut adrift in the league and our rivals have already wasted chances in their more favourable fixtures.

Keep playing like this and the results will come.

Seventeen Premier League teams are in Carabao Cup action this week and all will harbour hopes of making it through.

Should they manage it, the draw for the fourth round will take place about 22:15 BST on Wednesday, 27 September, following the game between Newcastle United and Manchester City.

The ties will then be played in the week commencing Monday, 30 October.

  11. Salford tie 'exciting' for Burnley - Kompany published at 07:23 26 September 2023

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

    Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport

Burnley can gain some much-needed joy when they travel to League Two strugglers Salford City in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday.

Vincent Kompany's men have collected only one point in the Premier League and their only win so far this season came in the previous round - both of those results were against Nottingham Forest.

Burnley were narrowly beaten 1-0 at home by Manchester United on Saturday but come up against a Salford side who lie 21st in the third tier, having lost their last five consecutive games.

The Clarets signed 14 players this summer, spending close to £100m, and manager Kompany has hinted at changes for Tuesday's game.

“There is plenty of exciting players in our squad and we’re going to need everyone this season," said Kompany. "The best way to get everyone to improve is to start them in a match like this.

“It’s an exciting game for us and there’s a lot of players we want to see in a Burnley shirt and we believe can make an impact on the squad this season. I’m looking forward to the game. It’s a good moment for us to go play this game.

“I think everyone has to remember that a lot of the new guys are still learning what we are trying to do. We saw this last season as well, as the team picked up results as time went on.

“The team are fighting every day for the spots and making sure they are getting the performances.”

  12. 'We did a lot right' - Al-Dakhil backs Burnley to keep improvingpublished at 17:04 25 September 2023

    Ameen Al-DakhilImage source, Getty Images

Burnley defender Ameen Al-Dakhil believes "the details" cost Burnley against Manchester United and is convinced the Clarets are edging closer to their first win back in the Premier League.

Bruno Fernandes' fine strike was sufficient to settle a tight game at Turf Moor against Manchester United on Saturday but Al-Dakhil is not panicking at a record of one draw and four defeats from their opening five fixtures.

"As a team, we did a lot right," he told BBC Radio Lancashire, external. "Possession-wise, we had all of the ball and they were only playing on the counter attack.

"We defended well but in the Premier League, it is always the details that matter. We hit the post and if that had been a goal the game would have been very different.

"We had the chances but did not score. We were a bit unlucky but it will come."

After a trip to Salford in the Carabao Cup in midweek, Burnley travel to Newcastle on Saturday in search of that elusive three points.

"We have had to come in and realise that this is the Premier League," he said. "Everyone can see we are getting better, giving everything on the training ground and trying our post.

"We want to make everyone happy and eventually the win will come."

  13. Burnley 'best equipped to survive this season'published at 14:07 25 September 2023

Vincent Kompany applauds fansImage source, Getty Images

    Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport

Burnley are one of those promoted clubs yet to collect a victory this season but look like the best equipped to survive this season.

The Clarets won the Championship last season and signed 14 players in the transfer window, spending close to £100m.

After the Manchester United game, Vincent Kompany pointed to the need to gel those players into his set-up and get them up to speed with his training methods.

But the Belgian also rightly mentioned an opening fixture list which has seen them come up against Treble winners Manchester City, in-form Aston Villa and Tottenham, Manchester United and then Newcastle on Saturday.

Burnley play some delightful football these days and were better than United for large parts of the game - it may well have been a different story if club-record signing Zeki Amdouni had put away one of his two opportunities in the first half.

The Switzerland international has shown signs of his potential so far and with the likes of Mike Tresor - last season's Belgium league player of the year - England U20 international Aaron Ramsey and Sander Berge all hoping to bed in, Kompany knows he has plenty of talent to call upon.

The former Manchester City captain has continually mentioned "progress" and "getting better" as the season goes on - with Burnley's squad size possessing plenty of quality, they are sure to improve once the fixtures get a little kinder.

  14. Your views on Saturday's gamepublished at 12:34 25 September 2023

    Your views banner

We asked for your views on Saturday's game between Burnley and Manchester United.

Here are some of your comments:

    Burnley fans

Brian: Burnley lacked quality in the final third but they played well in the other areas. I'm not sure whether it should be Muric in goal instead of Trafford?

Fred: Burnley are rubbish. We can’t even score against this Manchester United team. Get Sean Dyche back, who is this Kompany fella anyway? The best player for us was VAR, it was the only thing that stopped them from scoring more.

Graham: We played the better football throughout and looked confident and calm. United did what they had to do by scoring a sublime goal just before half-time. The signs are encouraging but we have to score goals, they are what win matches.

    Manchester United fans

Leighton: We played well. A really professional performance from the lads. We were good defensively and in the midfield we were a lot better than we have been. It was good to see Amrabat make his debut and Varane make his return because they are much needed at this moment in time. Also what a finish from Bruno!

Mahir: We started as badly as we've been playing for the past few weeks, conceding sloppy defensive errors. A magnificent Evans ball to our Portuguese magician Bruno and belief was restored, leading to much better passages of play. The last 30 minutes were much more stable, though we lacked creativity and pizzazz up front.

Mark: It's an ugly win, sometimes you have to take those. Substitutes weren't the best but we didn't have loads of choice. Hannibal was a brave choice and he did well. Onana proved he can make saves and be good with his feet, but anyone could have told you this.

David: On the performance tonight, United would have lost to most teams. At no time did they control the game and they relied on breakaways. Gone are the days when Scholes, Keane and Carrick used to control games from the midfield. Rashford’s form is also worrying.

  15. 'Bottom teams have to be disruptive and find a way'published at 08:24 25 September 2023

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Burnley need to be "disruptive" if they want to pull away from the bottom of the table, with the Clarets sitting on one point down in the relegation zone.

Burnley recorded one more shot on goal and equal shots on target in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Manchester United, and Robinson has urged them to take their chances.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, he said: "Teams like Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton - these bottom teams who are realistically going to be fighting relegation - they have to be disruptive and they have to find a way.

"If you go toe to toe with Manchester City or Liverpool, and Manchester United at times, they've got better players. It's a simple fact that they've got better players. If you try to play the same way as they're doing, with inferior players, you know what the result is going to be.

"You have to be disruptive, you have to make it uncomfortable for the opposition, you have to find a way disrupt their style.

"But you also have to play in a way that they don't like, or are not used to playing against. These teams aren't used to balls going into the box regularly, or longer balls that are more direct, but that's not necessarily the way football is played at the moment.

"Burnley missed a trick because Manchester United were there for the taking."

  17. 'Burnley lack devilment in the final third'published at 22:41 23 September 2023

Zeki Amdouni of Burnley hits the post during the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Manchester United at Turf MoorImage source, Getty Images

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand speaking on TNT Sports: "Burnley are going to have to start picking up points. They had their most ever passes recorded in the top flight today, so that shows some of their work is paying off. But they need to find that quality in the final third.

"As a defender, when you have a big number nine up there, you are wary and under pressure. Burnley just didn't have that, they didn't have the devilment in their side to get in the right areas in and around the box."

  18. Burnley 0-1 Man Utd: What Kompany saidpublished at 22:31 23 September 2023

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany speaking to BBC Sport: "We are very calm. We knew we had a very tough start in terms of the fixtures. We’ve put in a performance today and showed signs we could have had a result. We’ve shown signs of being an exciting team.

"The start is difficult in terms of results, but hopeful. I don’t see any reason to think this team lacks character or margin to grow. We’re prepared for this. We could win the first five or lose the first five, it doesn’t make us any better or worse.

"Hopefully the fans can rest assured we’re working 24/7 behind the scenes. We’ve seen improvements today, hopefully more in the weeks to come.

"Every game we’ve been dangerous. We didn't take our moments. The belief has to be there that we will. For us, it’s maybe about creating more and believing this team will get better as the season goes on.

"Losing is hard but if you can process it in the right way, it's the best way to learn. The results will come, that’s the belief that has to live in you."
