Burnley boss Scott Parker has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester United at Old Trafford (kick-off 15:00 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Parker shared there are "no fresh injuries" for his side.

    • Players have also improved on form and fitness. He explained: "Some of the lads got minutes during the week and that helps them get up to speed."

    • The manager is hopeful about doing "some business" regarding incomings and outgoings but said: "A lot of boxes need to be ticked for us to go into the window."

    • He said further: "There will be some players who will leave and getting that game time is essential for them."

    • On Manchester United: "We are playing against an exceptional and a historic football club. They have some top quality players, who can change games at any moment. We are under no illusions of the task we have ahead of us."

    • Parker believes that Manchester United's shock Grimsby defeat might make them "a bit of a wounded animal" but wouldn't be surprised if there "may be a bit of edginess" to them.

    • He says "belief" will be key for his side this weekend, adding: "We need to go there with a real belief about us. Believe in what we are, believe in how we go there with a game plan and try and execute that."

    • On Old Trafford's atmosphere: "Of course it's a tough arena, a 70,000 crowd and the stadium itself, along with the magnitude of what Manchester United and Old Trafford is."

  3. 'I can't express some feelings I've been through ' - Ramsey on scoring returnpublished at 15:39 BST 27 August

    Media caption,

Burnley midfielder Aaron Ramsey says he was "absolutely buzzing" to get on the scoresheet after missing the majority of last season with a knee injury.

The 22-year-old netted after just four minutes into his first game back at Turf Moor, having featured in just one league game last season.

The goal helped beat Championship outfit Derby 2-1, ensuring the Clarets' spot in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Ramsey said: "If you had told me this morning I'd get a goal in my first start back at Turf Moor since the injury, I'd have 100% took it.

"All those hard nights, long days at the training ground, the painful days, it's amazing now to get this.

"I can't really express some of the feelings I've been through every day - the dark days."

We asked for your views on Tuesday night's EFL Cup match between Burnley and Derby.

Here are some of your comments:

Sam: Mike Tresor back from the wilderness and providing the killer ball in the time of need. Let's hope he doesn't disappear again.

Peter: Back to the pass sideways and backwards of the Kompany era. Not much of a threat between the two goals, but they were very well worked goals. Don't understand why Parker kept Edwards on, he was worse than poor.

Ray: Good workout for the fringe players plus the annual Mike Tresor 10-second cameo with the assist in the winning goal.

Graham: Burnley fielded a scratch team with very little game time amongst most of the players and it showed. A low-key performance demonstrating little urgency but showing some nice touches leading to both goals. A decent, solid performance overall.

  5. 'We had the quality in the end'published at 07:56 BST 27 August

"We had to dig [in] at times" - Parker

Burnley boss Scott Parker, speaking after Tuesday's 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Derby:

"Overall, I'm pleased. Pleased with us coming out and winning the game and getting through to the next round.

"It was a good opportunity for a lot of the players to get some more minutes in their legs, for sure.

"It's still really early stages of the season - two games in really in terms of the league and a lot of these boys for different reasons, some making a debut tonight, some coming back from injury, and some boys who have probably not had a lot of minutes since pre-season.

"So, it was a brilliant opportunity to get some minutes in their legs, and I'm pleased with that, and everyone seems to have come through that.

"Then overall, pleased that we go through to the next round.

"We started the game very, very well. Obviously, well worked goal, and then the game at times becomes a little bit sticky. A real disciplined team in a low block, and we probed really, but just lacked a little something in the final third.

"I think the winning goal for us probably summed up the sort of level of detail we needed. It was a lovely ball through the lines, a nice set from Barnsey and then a really nice bit of quality from Mikey as well.

"When you're playing against teams like that, you probably just need that little bit of quality to try and unlock it and that was pleasing.

"We had the quality in the end."

  9. Back four gives Clarets 'more presence'published at 12:44 BST 26 August

It feels a bit early in the season to be talking about six pointers, doesn't it?

But when you're in a likely relegation battle and you need to win at least nine games to have any hopes of surviving, a home tie against Sunderland is probably in "must win" territory.

Sunderland were obviously coming into this game on a high, after comprehensively wining their opening game against West Ham. But it would be naïve to read too much into those early results, as flip those fixtures around and Burnley are likely sitting on three points too.

The number one aim for the weekend was to stunt Sunderland's optimism because confidence can often be the 12th man in critical games. Let them beat us, and we've got a mountain to climb.

The most pleasing thing about the performance was the confidence with which Burnley controlled the game. Reverting to four at the back, we had more of a presence in midfield and weren't as exposed as we were against Spurs. It also feels a waste of Kyle Walker to play him in a back three: surely you take advantage of one of the best right backs the league has ever seen and create some chances?

But, for now, the Clarets have passed their first test of the season. Eight more wins to go…

Captain Cullen scores Burnley's first goal back in the Premier League to help beat Sunderland

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Burnley and Sunderland.

Here are some of your comments:

    Burnley fans

Graham: Burnley played much better football in last week's defeat but showed the resilience required to survive in the Premier League. Two excellent goals displayed our resolve, and emphasised that we can make Turf Moor a fortress. That there are players still to come into the team and contribute makes me optimistic.

Reg: Burnley got away with one... defending was below Premier League standard, especially in the first half.

Gareth: Huge result that should give us some confidence for the tough-looking fixtures to come. Excellent game management after we got the first goal, showing organisation and resilience that was horribly lacking in our last season at this level. Promising signs.

    Sunderland fans

Jeff: Sunderland always flatter to deceive - maybe it was the 'unknown' factor with the Hammers, but Burnley know how to beat us.

Clive: I thought beforehand this would be a trickier test than last week. Losing Ballard early on didn't help. Huff and puff seemed to be the display.

John: Last week, everything clicked. This week, nothing clicked.

Josh Cullen told me before the game that the main thing they learnt from the opening loss was to ensure they took their chances. When the ball came to the captain, after some really nice team build up, including a deft flick on from Jaidon Anthony, the captain made sure to find the net. Just minutes into the second half, you could feel the collective wave of relief roll around Turf Moor.

There has been some trepidation on this return to the Premier League from Burnley fans, their last time here was not for the faint hearted. Would they find enjoyment in the top flight this season? Today they certainly did, with Cullen and Anthony lifting fans from their seats.

Scott Parked told me he breathed a big sigh of relief as Anthony latched onto Cullen's pass late on to wrap all three points. Jaidon Anthony too admitted that goal felt so important on the pitch, with Sunderland pressing for an equaliser. It calmed the nerves round Turf Moor and sent the fans away happy.

This place was a fortress in the Championship, Parker's aim is to bring that, and some goals to it, this Premier League season. Today was a sign that it's possible, this time round.

  12. Burnley analysis: Clarets can exhale after crucial winpublished at 17:57 BST 23 August

    Sam Drury
    BBC Sport journalist

It is strange to think that a game so early in the season might be so crucial but, for Burnley, there was no denying the importance of this one.

On paper, a home game against a side they finished 24 points clear of in the Championship last season would have been viewed as perhaps their most winnable of the season.

Defeat at Spurs last weekend was not unexpected but while the club may be braced for a relegation battle, ensuring it is seen as a battle rather than an inevitability is vital and the value of an early home win cannot be overstated.

For all that Scott Parker's men made most of the running in the first half, they created precious little, while allowing Sunderland two very presentable chances.

But they came out for the second half with far more energy and ran out thoroughly deserved winners, making the most of the two real chances they created while blunting Sunderland's limited attacking threat in the spell prior to the game-clinching second goal.

It is just three points but given the doom and gloom that may have followed a loss, this result allows Burnley the chance to exhale and build their way into the campaign.

  13. Burnley 2-0 Sunderland: What Parker saidpublished at 17:44 BST 23 August

    Media caption,

Scott Parker spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Burnley's victory against Sunderland: "This is a massive three points for us.

"We knew the challenge ahead of us today against a good side coming off the back of a very good result. We were well worthy of the three points, which is pleasing.

"We have been very comfortable in those positions. Our structure was very good, I felt vert comfortable but in this division you never know, always fine margins. It was a bit of relief when the second goal went in.

"A lot of new players. It is positive today because we got a result. It is a big confidence for us as well. We need to keep working.

"We need to make this place exactly like it was today. Our home stadium will be massively important for us and the fans will play an important part in that."

    Did you know?

Burnley kept their first clean sheet in their last 22 Premier League games since a 2-0 win at Fulham in December 2023, and first in 12 at Turf Moor in the division since beating Sheffield United 5-0 in December 2023.

  14. Burnley v Sunderland: Team news published at 14:02 BST 23 August

    Burnley lineup

Scott Parker makes two changes to the Burnley side beaten 3-0 at Tottenham last Saturday.

Jacob Bruun Larsen and Lesley Oguchukwu, who makes his first competitive start for the Clarets, come in with the displaced Oliver Sonne and Josh Laurent among the substitutes.

Burnley XI: Dubravka, Walker, Esteve, Ekdal, Hartman, Bruun Larsen, Cullen, Ugochukwu, Hannibal, Anthony, Foster.

Subs: Weiss, Worrall, Edwards, Tchaouna, Flemming, Ramsey, Sonne, Pires, Laurent.

Centre-back Omar Alderete comes in for his full Premier League debut as Regis Le Bris makes just one change to the Sunderland XI that started last weekend's 3-0 win over West Ham.

Jenson Seelt, who was replaced by Alderete early in the second half last week, drops to the bench.

Sunderland XI: Roefs, Hume, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo, Xhaka, Sadiki, Diarra, Talbi, Adringra, Mayenda.

Subs: Patterson, Neil, Guiu, Roberts, Rigg, Isidor, Seelt, Masuaku, Le Fee.

  15. Sutton's predictions: Burnley v Sunderlandpublished at 11:04 BST 23 August

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

I wrote Sunderland off months ago at the end of last season, but they surprised me last week with a hell of a win against West Ham.

Those two headers from Eliezer Mayenda and Dan Ballard were absolutely brilliant and they deserved their victory.

Burnley had their moments against Tottenham but they didn't take them. They will need to get a foothold in this season sooner rather than later.

This one stinks of a draw. I think it'll be close and Burnley will want more, but Sunderland will be satisfied with their start.

  16. Burnley v Sunderland: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 18:00 BST 22 August

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport journalist

The first meeting between newly promoted sides takes place this weekend with Burnley and Sunderland experiencing contrasting fortunes during the first round of matches.

Burnley's impressive 100-point promotion campaign was largely underpinned by two key principles – a near-perfect home record and a watertight defence.

The Clarets conceded just 16 goals in 46 Championship games last term but shipped three in an afternoon on their Premier League return last Saturday. Scott Parker's side performed admirably at Tottenham despite the defeat, and the 3-0 scoreline perhaps flattered their hosts.

A return to Lancashire provides a fresh opportunity for Burnley to open their Premier League account and they were unbeaten on home soil last season, with 14 wins and nine draws from their 23 matches at Turf Moor in 2024-25.

    Burnley's home record in 2024-25

Burnley's first home match of 2024-25 was a 5-0 thrashing of Cardiff City, and although a similar result would be welcomed by all connected to the club, it doesn't appear likely. The team were wasteful in north London on Saturday and failed to take any of the 12 chances they created.

Fan favourite Ashley Barnes was not involved at Spurs but the 35-year-old is the top Premier League scorer in the squad with a respectable 42 goals.

He is also their only current player to reach double figures in the division. The next nearest to his total are Armando Broja and Kyle Walker with eight apiece. Last season's 18-goal top scorer Josh Brownhill has also departed the club and so the simple question remains: where are Burnley's goals going to come from?

Burnley's top Premier League scorers in current squad

Finding the net was not a problem for Sunderland on the opening day as they put three unanswered goals past West Ham at a pulsating Stadium of Light.

It was their first victory in the opening month of a top-flight campaign for 15 years and although the club have made 12 signings, Saturday's three scorers all featured heavily in last season's promotion campaign, a fact that head coach Regis le Bris was quick to recognise.

"They showed they can step up today," he said after the match. "They are really important because they keep the identity of the club and the way we worked last season."

The Black Cats could now win their opening two matches of a top-flight season for the first time since 1980-81. They avoided relegation on the final day of that campaign 44 years ago, and three points here would provide a big boost to their chances of survival before the summer is even over.

  17. Parker on team news, 'positives' from defeat and 'mantra' for the seasonpublished at 16:46 BST 21 August

Burnley boss Scott Parker has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Sunderland at Turf Moor (kick-off 15:00 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Parker confirmed Axel Tuanzebe and Bashir Humphreys are both back in training, while Armando Broja is now "another week down the line" and all are "edging to be involved at the weekend".

    • The Burnley boss felt there were "lots of positives" and "a lot of learnings" for the team to take from their 3-0 defeat by Tottenham on the opening weekend as they are "a young squad" and "still learning things".

    • On if it is easy to park and move on from that result now: "Yes, definitely. It was our mantra last year and will be this year. Football moves very quickly, psychologically it moves quickly. We can't spend days thinking about it. There is a need to reflect and have a ruthless assessment at times, face up to that and adopt an attitude of how and where we need to improve."

    • On how much business he is expecting the club to do over the next 10 days: "Hoping to do something if we can. There are different variables that come in this time of year. There are elements in our squad we want to try and improve but I know that is difficult. Regarding outgoings, there will be some players moving to lighten us with a heavy squad."

    • Parker does not feel Saturday's game is a must-win but thinks the fans will be "vital" this weekend and for the season. He added: "There will be bumpy times and adversity but I feel the fans can help this young team and spur us on, and I know they will be behind us through thick and thin and good and bad."

    • On what he expects facing fellow promoted side Sunderland: "A good side. A totally different team to the one we faced last year. They have brought in a lot of players, recruited well. I don't think anything has changed fundamentally in the structure, but personnel has changed and they have brought in added quality. Coming off a good result at home, but this is our first home game and a game we are looking forward to."
