Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston couldn't secure an upset against Lionel Messi as Canada opened the Copa America with a 2-0 defeat by defending champions Argentina.

Johnston played the full 90 minutes in Atlanta as Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez opened the scoring from close range shortly after half-time.

Substitute Lautaro Martinez confirmed the win late on for the World Cup winners when turning in Messi's pass.

Canada, who are managed by former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, meet Peru next at 23:00 BST on 25 June.

"Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply disturbed by racist comments made online and directed at one of our men's national team players following tonight's match," read a statement posted on X.

"We are in communication with [governing bodies] Concacaf and Conmebol about this matter."

  4. Quiet start to Celtic's summer businesspublished at 17:14 20 June

Early days in the transfer window, but is it a surprise to see no activity at Celtic so far?

Perhaps it is, given the Premiership champions and Hibernian are the only two Scottish top-flight sides yet to do any business.

It is certainly too soon to be hitting the panic button, but fans of the Parkhead side are demanding their club doesn't stand still after a league and Scottish Cup double.

You can guarantee manager Brendan Rodgers will share that expectation, so what will he be looking to address?

What's clear is signing a goalkeeper has to be a priority following the retirement of Joe Hart.

Tentative reports have linked Celtic with Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher, but the Republic of Ireland keeper would surely be out of the Glasgow club's price range.

Links with Croatia's Dominik Livakovic, currently at Fenerbahce, have also resurfaced in recent days.

And what will the summer bring for Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo? The duo spent last season on loan at Celtic, with Norwich striker Idah, a winter signing, having a significant impact on the club's double win.

Benfica's Bernardo, meanwhile, was in and out of Rodgers' team throughout the campaign, scoring four goals from 33 appearances.

An option to buy the 22-year-old midfielder was included the loan deal, but it remains to be seen whether the club will activate that.

Shaqiri's 'wonder strike' brings Switzerland level

Scotland midfielder Callum McGregor and captain Andy Robertson have praised "big character" Anthony Ralston’s "unbelievable" response to being at fault for Switzerland’s equaliser.

Right-back Ralston’s slack backpass was pounced upon by Xherdan Shaqiri to lash a fabulous strike into the top corner shortly after Scott McTominay’s first-half opener in the pulsating 1-1 draw.

Celtic skipper McGregor, who provided the assist for McTominay’s goal, said of his 25-year-old clubmate Ralston: "Big, big character and still a young player as well.

"He hasn’t played a huge amount of football either and to get thrown into that top-level football, he deals with it really well.

"He’s such an honest boy. Listen, that can happen to anybody. People make mistakes, people give the ball away. Sometimes it’s a night when you get punished and sometimes you don’t get punished.

"That’s one that did get punished but to come back and show that level of performance and calmness for a young player speaks volumes for him."

Ralston also received backing from Robertson, who said: "Tony was unbelievable after that mistake.

"Not many people could come back from that. It was a difficult one for him but second half he was a different class."

  8. 'Forrest can provide ammunition' - Celtic winger backed to face Swisspublished at 11:44 19 June

Celtic's James Forrest hasn't started a competitive fixture for Scotland since the 1-1 draw at home to Israel in September 2020

James Forrest should be pitched in for his first competitive Scotland start in four years for tonight's crucial game with Switzerland.

That's the verdict of BBC Scotland pundits Neil McCann and Leanne Crichton as they weigh up the selection conundrums facing Steve Clarke, who is without suspended centre-back Ryan Porteous.

Celtic defender Antony Ralston endured a torrid evening at right wing-back in the opening 5-1 defeat by Germany and winger Forrest, 32, is in contention to replace his club-mate against the Swiss.

McCann said: "I'd bring Grant Hanley into the middle, move Jack Hendry to the right, and Kieran Tierney to the left of the back three.

"On the right, I'd go quite aggressive. I've done it myself and used a winger as a wing-back. You can do it if you've got guys in the right centre-back position who are good enough and quick enough to cope with playing a slightly more aggressive forward player.

"For me, that right wing-back is James Forrest. He's better coming inside, but if we can have him having a go at Michel Aebischer... he scored and created a goal against Hungary, but he's a left-footed right wing-back.

"If we can get Forrest going at him on his left foot on the outside, it might give us ammunition."

Crichton added: "Clarke is renowned for being loyal and consistent with his team selection, so I don't see too much changing.

"Hanley will come in and replace Porteous. Potentially you might see a change at right wing-back because there's been a lot of noise made about that.

"Through no fault of his own, I don't think Ralston has played enough games this season to merit playing back-to-back games. So you might get Forrest going in there, which I'd not object to."

Former Celtic and Dundee United defender Charlie Mulgrew has embarked on a new chapter in his career by being appointed Hamilton's Under-18s coach.

Mulgrew retired from playing in September last year after his second spell with United, calling time on an 18-year career in which he earned 44 Scotland caps and won seven trophies with Celtic.

The 38-year-old will now helm the elite youth academy at Championship newcomers Hamilton, with the club saying his "guidance and mentorship" can "inspire, motivate, and elevate the players to reach their full potential".

  12. 'Once you get to certain age, people think you can't learn'published at 17:09 17 June

    Martin O'NeillImage source, SNS

Former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, 72, believes ageism is playing a part in him currently being out of a management role.

The Northern Irishman left Nottingham Forest in 2019 and has been without a club in the following five years.

O'Neill says he's "72 going on 35" but feels once "you get to a certain age, people think you'll never learn anymore".

"In European football, with very few exceptions, it's coaches now," the ex-Celtic manager, who won seven domestic trophies during five years in Glasgow, told BBC Scotland.

"You're a head coach rather than a manager. So the days of Sir Alex Ferguson running the club, or myself running at Celtic, I think those days for the younger coach have gone.

"I remember Dermot Desmond, who is the major shareholder of Celtic, said he wanted me to take ownership of the football club. We didn't even know each other.

"So those things have changed in the game. And like anything else, it doesn't matter, people take age into consideration.

"It's as if you are a certain age, then you're some sort of Luddite that can't bend to change.

“The game has changed, there's no question about it, but it's an insult, to take people with experience on and say they no longer can learn the game.

"That's the problem, really, in society."

Celtic defenders Alistair Johnston and Cameron Carter-Vickers are primed for action at Copa America 2024 after being confirmed in Canada and the USA's squads respectively.

Johnston is set test himself against eight-time Ballon d'Or-winning captain Lionel Messi when Canada open the tournament against defending champions - and reigning world champions - Argentina on Friday (01:00 BST).

Canada also face Chile and Peru Group A while Johnston's team-mates include Motherwell striker Theo Bair and Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies.

Carter-Vickers could face off with Luis Suarez in what is likely to be the Uruguayan all-time leading goalscorer's final international tournament.

Carter-Vickers will play alongside AC Milan pair Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah as well as Juventus duo Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah.

Hosts USA are in Group C alongside Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia.

  15. Celtic pay tribute to one of club's 'most important figures'published at 22:22 16 June

Celtic have paid tribute to one of the club's "most important figures" John Keane, who has died.

The former director and honorary president gave £1m to the club to stop it slipping into administration in the 1990s.

Keane then went on to back the takeover of Fergus McCann, which laid the foundations for Celtic to return to the top of Scottish football.

He served as a non executive director for over 20 years, and in 2013 was named honorary chairman.

Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell said: “Today we have lost a true Celtic great and a wonderful friend, someone who will always mean so much to Celtic and a man who gave his heart and soul to the Club.

"His contribution to Celtic was phenomenal over many years but above all, the way he was, his humility and compassion and love for his family shone from him every day and made him the man he was."

Majority shareholder Dermot Desmond said Celtic would "forever be indebted" to Keane.

"He was a humble man of few words, but when he did speak they were pearls of wisdom," Desmond added.

"We are fortunate that he has passed on these virtues to Mark, his son, one of our shareholders."

Jamal Musiala sidestepped Callum McGregor to score Germany's second goal

Callum McGregor says Scotland "have a lot of growth to do" and "have to find a solution" to their poor run of form before facing Switzerland in their second Euro 2024 group game on Wednesday.

Steve Clarke's side are already playing catch-up after Friday's 5-1 opening dismissal by hosts Germany - a result that midfielder McGregor described as "a humbling experience".

But the Celtic captain stressed: "I think, if you are realistic, the game last night, they are on a different level to what we are and it was probably never going to define where we finish in the group.

"Football's full of difficult moments - the only thing that's guaranteed is disappointment. It's how we deal with it, how we process it internally."

McGregor realises it is a test of the squad's mental strength and togetherness.

"It is hard to be positive after what happened last night," he admitted. "Football has a way of keeping you honest and it was a humbling experience.

"It is important you take that lesson, be professional and dust yourself down. We have to hold our hands up, we got it wrong, and now it's up to us to fix it."

After five straight victories all but secured qualification for the finals, the Scots have enjoyed only one win, over minnows Gibraltar, in 10 outings.

"When you go on a bad run, the confidence can start to dip, but it is only us that can change that," McGregor added.

"Everyone will come at us for what is a poor performance, but you can't let that pull us apart. You have to say together, stay strong and prove people wrong.

"The two teams we are playing will smell blood, but we have to find a solution, whatever that may be.

"We've earned the right to be here because we qualified, but now we are at the elite level and we have a lot of growth to do and we've got a lot of work to be done."

  19. Buy one, sell one, loan one out - your pickspublished at 16:38 14 June

    Your views

If you could only buy one, sell one, and loan out one player at Celtic, who would you pick?

That was the question we asked you to answer, with the transfer window now open.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Andy: Buy Paulo Bernardo, sell Matt O'Riley and loan Maik Nawrocki. Bernardo could be the next O'Riley so it's a sound investment. I think we will definitely lose O'Riley so need that replacement. Nawrocki is another development player and will come good. Benjamin Siegrist has got to be ahead of Scott Bain, I don't get what's happened to him as he was a superb keeper.

Gordon: We should be doing everything we can to convince O'Riley to stay for another season. Re-sign Idah, prioritise the goalkeeping situation, bring in a more physical centre-half and left-back and also offload the deadwood to free up funds. We need strength in most areas to compete in Europe.

Nicky: Goalkeeper is a must. Free agent David De Gea would be magnificent but Celtic wouldn't even cover a 10th of the wage he earned at Man Utd.

Paul: We should invest in great coaches and bring through all the young boys and get back to our great teams of the past. Our success in Europe were all local boys. Instead of buying these development players who don’t make it.

Andrew: Instead of buying in bulk, we need to sign established players that hit the ground running and are going to improve the squad, not sit on the bench or play in the reserves.

Sean: We all know what Celtic need to do to stay ahead and push on in Europe. A top-class keeper, an improvement on our current left-back position, a left footed CB to play alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers (Scott McKenna) and a striker in either Idah or I would be equally happy with Bojan Miovski. We have £70m+ in the bank and we need to splash out £5-6m on each of these four positions.

Scotland's Greg TaylorImage source, PA Media

Celtic defender Greg Taylor is hoping to add to his 14 Scotland caps at Euro 2024.

The 26-year-old didn't play at the previous Euros and is understudy to Andy Robertson for the left-back berth.

But Taylor knows how meaningful just being selected for the squad is.

"To go to a major tournament once with your country is more than any young boy can dream," he said.

"I didn't feature in the last tournament so I'd love to play some minutes in this tournament.

"If that doesn't come I can still say I've been to two major tournaments with my country.

"I've got 14 caps now for my country and I've never taken one for granted. I hope I get more than that."
