Chelsea’s sporting management are in for a busy couple of days, perhaps almost as busy as this summer's entire dealings so far.

Headlining all of the incomings is Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in a move that would create a fearsome frontline with all of the Blues' existing attacking talent behind him. To spread out the costs involved, it appears the move would be a loan with an obligation to buy next summer, although Al-Ahli are offering superior terms.

Should any deal for the Nigerian fall through, Chelsea are also looking at Brentford's Ivan Toney while Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also been mooted. The club evidently feels the collection of Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Marc Guiu up front are not enough to ensure contention for future Champions League football.

Napoli themselves are still finalising the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, a player who has long worn out his welcome at Stamford Bridge.

And this is not the only game of musical chairs given new manager Enzo Maresca's exclusion of Raheem Sterling. Sterling's reported £300,000 per week wages are a stumbling block and there are rumours of a swap deal with Manchester United for Jadon Sancho.

In defence, Trevoh Chalobah has been targeted by a number of clubs while Axel Disasi appears to be on Newcastle's radar if their move for Marc Guehi (another Chelsea youth product) falls through. Chelsea are even looking at Benfica's Tomas Araujo to provide cover if one or both those deals materialise.

Other players on the transfer list include Ben Chilwell, a player who has given his all for the club in his time here and one of the last two players remaining from the Blues' 2021 Champions League win (Reece James being the other) as well as Armando Broja and Carney Chukwuemeka. Chelsea's official homegrown contingent is officially dwindling.

  3. Which striker would you like Chelsea to sign?published at 10:40 29 August

It is no secret that Chelsea are in the market for an out-and-out striker after struggling to really replace the goalscoring prowess of former forwards Didier Drogba and Diego Costa.

But, that could be about to change.

According to reports, the Blues have opened talks with the agent of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen over a potential move, while it is understood Brentford’s Ivan Toney is also high up on their list of striker targets.

So who would you like to see the club sign, Chelsea fans?

Are you all in for Osimhen? Or is Toney your number one choice?

Perhaps you’re already happy with Enzo Maresca’s current choices in the squad.

  4. Willian wants to play until he is 40published at 10:40 29 August

Former Fulham and Chelsea winger Willian is open to another Premier League move as he insists he can play until he is 40.

The Brazil international, now 36, is a free agent after leaving Craven Cottage this summer when his contract expired.

When asked why he left Fulham and where he next sees his future, Willian told BBC Sport: “I decided to leave Fulham much before the end of the season in January or February. I had it in my mind that I would leave after speaking with my agent and family. It wasn't a decision made at the end of the season but a couple of months ago.

“I am looking at some options at the moment. I am thinking about possibilities in Europe, England, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the MLS - just not Brazil as an option for me.

"I am trying to see all the possibilities and think about making the right decision right now. I have some offers already and this is the key moment to decide my next challenge.”

As a free agent, Willian could move after the transfer deadline as long as there is space in squads to register him.

He has continued to stay in shape and believes he has “three or four years” left in him, adding: “I am feeling great physically and in two seasons at Fulham, I didn't have any problems at all, so I feel completely great.

“I am working in the gym to be in good shape but, of course, it is different from training every day and being ready inside a club. But I am doing all I can to be in good shape for my next club.

"I think my level physically and mentally is great. I think I can play for three or four years more - maybe until I am 40 years old! I feel motivated and at a high level."

He also praised Fulham and former manager Marco Silva for reviving his career after a tough spell at Corinthians.

"I only have good words to say about Fulham. It was an amazing two years and they treated me so well. I will always be thankful to them for opening the door to play in the Premier League again.

"The owners, people who work in the club, the guys and Marco Silva - he is a great coach and person."

The moment you allow yourself to feel a little smug, life quite rightly rips the rug from under you. In pre-season, I was one of very few pundits at the BBC to suggest Chelsea would finish in the top four.

‌For all the mayhem at Stamford Bridge, a creative line behind the striker of Cole Palmer, Joao Felix (fabulous player!) and either Pedro Neto or Noni Madueke is a stunningly exciting prospect.

‌I was on BBC Radio 5 Live when Enzo Maresca announced his team and my initial thoughts were: "That is a very sensible, grown-up team selection and system, even if they are a youngish lot."

‌It is only one game, but, listening to the no-nonsense coach, he sounds like a man determined to take control. He is not interested in what others think, be they fans, players, media and maybe most importantly the suits upstairs at the club.

‌It has cost billions, but the quality is arguably now there. We should all just let him get on with it, for a while.

They may well ship a lot of goals, but with that frontline, they could score even more.

  6. Chelsea's young team 'expected to compete for titles very soon'published at 08:11 29 August

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

    Stamford BridgeImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea have signed 12 players this summer with an average age of 21 despite criticism that they have 'too many players' and their squad is too young.

Even more ironically, the last signing is a goalkeeper in £17m Genk youngster Mike Penders, who will join in 2025, amid further ridicule that the club have so many potential options for the position.

However, for many inside the building at Stamford Bridge, this is a strategy that will pay off and the 6-2 win away at Wolves is potentially sign of progress for their approach.

They expect this young team - which has seen a further £276.6m of talent added this summer to well over £1bn spent in the previous four transfer windows under this Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership - to start competing for titles very soon.

There is a feeling that manager Enzo Maresca is a better fit for this club than Mauricio Pochettino was and that players like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Noni Madueke will naturally improve as they mature together.

It's also worth noting that nearly £140m has been raised in player sales this summer to help balance the books with further outgoings to come.

  8. Maresca on striker links, Sterling and Sanchopublished at 20:20 28 August

Chelsea boss Enzo Marseca has been speaking to the media before Thursday's Uefa Conference League play-off second-leg at Servette (kick-off 19:30 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Maresca confirmed that Romeo Lavia and Reece James are still out through injury, while Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto are not included to give them "protection".

    • On if he will be happy when the transfer window closes on Friday: "I think it's a feeling for all the managers because when the transfer window is open, anything can happen - we can sell players, we can buy players, we can loan players. So the moment the transfer window is closed, it is closed for everyone and we can just focus on the squad we have."

    • With Chelsea one of the busiest sides in the market this summer, Maresca said it is "not a mad club" as since he arrived "there is a clear direction of where the club wants to go".

    • On what Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney links mean for Nicolas Jackson: "I didn't speak to Nicolas about this. I had a meeting with Nicolas yesterday but just about the amount of good things he is doing with us. I don't think Nicolas needs a chat. He is our nine, our striker in this moment. We are very happy with him."

    • He confirmed none of the players training away from the main squad will get minutes after deadline day and, on Raheem Sterling, added: "I said already many times, he is a fantastic person. The only thing is that every manager has a different idea. He is not the type of winger I like, that says nothing about Raheem. The history and the numbers speak for Raheem."

    • On reports that the club are interested in Manchester United's Jadon Sancho: "If we can sign a player that can help us, for sure I would. Jadon is not our player. I know him very well from Man City, but he is not our player."

    • Maresca said the pitch at Servette's Stade de Geneve "doesn't look good", adding: "We need to be good and to adapt, otherwise we're going to struggle."

  9. Chelsea begin late pursuit for Napoli's Osimhenpublished at 14:22 28 August

Chelsea initiated contact with Victor Osimhen's agent on Tuesday night as Napoli brace themselves for an opening offer for the striker.

Osimhen, 25, has given Chelsea the green light over a move to Stamford Bridge this summer amid doubts over whether personal terms could be agreed.

The Blues have moved slowly to squeeze Napoli's £113m asking price, which is based on a release clause in a contract signed in December 2023, and to get the Nigeria international to accept a wage on reduced terms.

The first bid is expected to be vastly below the asking price and include substantial wages linked to performance-related bonuses.

But it remains to be seen whether the offer will be to buy Osimhen or for an initial loan deal that could then turn into a permanent transfer.

Sources close to Chelsea also insist they have multiple striker targets, including Brentford's Ivan Toney.

However, Osimhen is top of the Blues' list, with Romelu Lukaku preparing to move in the other direction for a fee of about £30m.

Napoli also need to sell Osimhen to fund their approach for Lukaku, as well as midfielders Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour from Manchester United and Brighton respectively.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are also looking to offload a host of players, including goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, winger Raheem Sterling and defenders Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah.

  11. When is the Carabao Cup third-round draw?published at 12:20 28 August

Liverpool players celebrate winning the Carabao CupImage source, Getty Images

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Wednesday at the conclusion of the second-round tie between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

The seven English clubs involved in European competitions this season, including holders Liverpool, will enter at the third-round stage.

Ties will take place on weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.

Because there are rounds of Champions League and Europa League fixtures also scheduled for those two midweeks, the six clubs involved in those competitions - Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United - will be kept apart to ensure they can fulfil their Carabao Cup tie in the alternate midweek to their European fixture.

Those six clubs will take part in a pre-draw before Forest v Newcastle to decide if they will be at home or away in the third round, with a main draw determining the 16 ties later in the evening.

Should Chelsea progress to the next phase of the Conference League, they will not be in action in that competition again until the start of October.

  13. 'We're getting an idea of what Maresca is all about'published at 12:40 27 August

    Will Faulks
    Fan writer

    Chelsea fan's voice banner

We're just a few Enzo Maresca press conferences in to the new Chelsea manager's reign, but we're already starting to get an idea of what he's all about.

Gone is the cuddly, encouraging atmosphere that Mauricio Pochettino brought to the table. Maresca is much more precise, quite blunt and not keen on messing around. While he is determined not to be painted simply as a knock-off Pep Guardiola, there's no denying he has the same air of intensity when it comes to talking about football.

The head coach has a long way to go in getting this team back to the top level, but Sunday's result was an important step. His side got a few lucky breaks, and there still were obvious issues to sort out, but an impressive result like that buys plenty of time and freedom to get to work on fixing them.

The return leg in the Europa Conference League play-off on Thursday gives Maresca a further chance to tweak and tinker before Chelsea play Crystal Palace this weekend. Already there are debates about what changes he might make to a winning team for that game. Romeo Lavia needs has to come back in to give the midfield a bit more body - but who do you leave out?

Up front there are similar questions. Mykhailo Mudryk has surely played his way out of contention now, with Pedro Neto likely to replace him. But how do you fit Neto, Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku and hat-trick scorer Noni Madueke into the same attack? How about Joao Felix, who returned to action with a goal against Wolves? Thankfully, the big win has bought Maresca a lot of time to answer these questions, and more authority to add important weight to his decisions.

Bournemouth have agreed a season-long loan deal for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, subject to a medical.

The 29-year-old is travelling to the south coast for his medical after extending his contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026.

The extension was put in place so Chelsea could avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of the loan deal, with his previous contract expiring next June.

The move is expected to end Bournemouth's interest in Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale and could see Mark Travers leave the club before Friday's transfer deadline.

  15. Penders agrees long-term Chelsea dealpublished at 12:09 27 August

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper Mike Penders from Genk next summer.

The 19-year-old will officially join on a long-term contract until 2032 in the summer of 2025, for a feel believed to be in the region of £17m.

Penders, a Belgium Under-19 international, only made his senior debut for Genk in July.

He kept a clean sheet and, at 18 years and 363 days, became the third-youngest goalkeeper to debut in the Belgian top flight.

It was expected that he would sign this transfer window and return to Genk on loan, but in signing next year it keeps open a international loan spot this season, with only six allowed by Fifa.

The deal adds to the Blues' already vast array of goalkeepers, with Filip Jorgensen, Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, veteran Marcus Bettinelli and academy product Lucas Bergstrom all on the books.
