  2. Sutton's predictions: Chelsea v Morecambepublished at 10:44 11 January

Chris Sutton's predictions with Billy Bob Thornton

BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton has made his predictions for all 32 FA Cup third round games and given his verdict on who will make it into round four.

For this week's matches he is up against actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton, who is a Liverpool fan.

    Sutton's prediction: 6-1

Morecambe are struggling at the bottom of League Two now, but I remember getting humbled 3-1 by them once, when I was Lincoln manager.

I had a pop at the linesman in the second half over an offside call and gave him a bit of stick.

He turned around and told me 'don't worry about me mate, your team is rubbish', only he used a rude word.

I had no comeback to that, so I just went and quietly sat back down in my dug-out.

As far as this tie goes, you cannot look past Chelsea even though they have had a disappointing dip in form in the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca will use his Europa Conference line-up, but they will still be too strong for the Shrimps. He does not have to worry about the linesman giving him stick.

    Billy's prediction: 4-1

The FA Cup third round is well under way, with Premier League sides Everton, Fulham and Aston Villa the clubs already booking their places in the fourth-round draw with wins on Thursday and Friday.

But for other sides hoping for a healthy cup run this season, when will the draw take place?

The draw will be live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer following the conclusion of the Arsenal v Manchester United tie, which kicks off at 15:00 GMT on Sunday.

It will include 32 teams - with all third-round matches this weekend settled on the day - and the resulting ties will be played over the weekend commencing Saturday, 8 February.

  4. Maresca updates on Veiga and Chukwuemeka's futurespublished at 08:46 11 January

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca gave widescale updates on the futures of players across his squad before the FA Cup match against Morecambe.

After giving updates on Ben Chilwell, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and explaining the reported disagreement over the severity of Wesley Fofana's injury, the Italian was asked about midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

After revealing it would be "useless" to play Chilwell as the club look to sell him, he said Chukwuemeka is in a similar position.

"Carney won't be included," Maresca said. "More or less the decision is like Chilwell and Cesare Casadei. Cesare, probably Chilwell and Carney, they are the same situation.

"It's something that I said at the beginning that Carney is a good player. But we have so many midfield players that he will struggle to get minutes with us.

"Probably for him the best solution is to go and get minutes. So he won't be involved in our game."

He was then asked about Portugal international Veiga, who has been linked with Napoli and Wolves, adding: "He's the same as Kiernan. Renato is our player, [on Saturday] he's going to play and he's a player that we're happy to have here with us.

"The last game he played was Tottenham away and in a delicate moment of the game we put him there. This showed how we trust Renato.

"But as I said, it's not just what I think, or what the club thinks, or what the player thinks. It's something that altogether we need to make the right decision for the club and the players and the manager."

Chelsea are believed to be exploring central defensive options in January, as Maresca revealed he "liked" Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi but he denied that his club need to replace an injured Fofana in January.

"We have Benoit who is close to being back, we have Josh who is doing well, Axel (Disasi) and Levi (Colwill) who can all do well in the position. At this moment I think we are OK," he explained.

  5. Maresca on Fofana injury, Guehi speculation and Chilwell futurepublished at 14:24 10 January

    Nicola Pearson
    BBC Sport journalist

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media before Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie against Morecambe (kick-off 15:00 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Reece James and Romeo Lavia "are available and can get some minutes" against Morecambe, while it is "still too early" for recalled defender Aaron Anselmino as he needs to "adapt to English weather and English football" first.

    • On Wesley Fofana's social media suggesting he could be back in a few weeks, having been ruled out for the season by the Chelsea boss: "It has been quite clear. I speak with Wes about the 12-16 weeks the club mention to me, it is the situation. Wes is thinking he can recover sooner than that. We would all be happy if we could receive him for tomorrow, but we will see. There is no problem. I just say what the medical staff tell me."

    • Maresca did not want to comment on speculation linking the Blues with former defender Marc Guehi, but added: "I like Marc for sure, but he is not our player. I also like the central defenders we have. I also like central defenders in Italy, Spain and France, but it does not mean we are going to buy those players."

    • He also confirmed it is "is exactly the same" answer on reports suggesting Trevoh Chalobah could be recalled from Crystal Palace: "Trev is a good player, but also a Palace player, so we will see."

    • Maresca said fringe players like Cesare Casadei and Ben Chilwell will not feature on Saturday, adding: "Chilwell in this moment is also thinking he is probably going to leave, so it is better to avoid using him to avoid that situation of injury. So the plan is not to use Ben tomorrow."

    • Despite Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall having a lack of minutes since signing, the Italian said he "for sure has a future with us" and "in this moment there is no plan" to sell or loan out the midfielder.

    • On if his role in recruitment has changed since joining Chelsea: "At the end, I am the one working every day with players. How can I train with players if there is no voice from the manager? But, it is not just the manager who decides, it is a decision taken altogether."

    • Marseca denied players "switch off" at the end of games after recent issues conceding late goals and added: "During the season you have movements where you score at the end and you have moments where you concede at the end. Hopefully, it is just a moment and we can avoid that and we start scoring in the final minutes."

Transfer windows and Chelsea go hand-in-hand.

Since the Roman Abramovich era, the action on the pitch has often felt secondary to what is going on at the negotiating table.

Chelsea have been quiet on incoming moves so far in January, although they are believed to be interested in signing a defender, with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi among those admired.

Questions likely to be asked ahead of Morecambe's visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday include:

    • Will Enzo Maresca ring the changes against League Two opposition?

    • How important will the FA Cup be, given Chelsea are yearning for silverware?

    • Any news on incoming transfers, including Guehi?

    • Is this is the perfect fixture to get out of their four-game winless streak?

    • Will Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall leave Chelsea in January?

    • Will the Blues will recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Palace?

West Ham are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in January.

The Hammers are keen to bolster their squad after announcing Graham Potter as their new manager on Thursday morning.

Dewsbury-Hall is believed to be on the shortlist of options to improve the squad.

Chelsea are reportedly open to allowing Dewsbury-Hall to rebuild his confidence away from the club, after his initial struggles following his £30m summer move from Leicester.

Dewsbury-Hall has been unable to emulate his success under manager Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge, having won Leicester's Player of the Season award under Maresca - as the Midlands club won the Championship last season.

The former Blackpool and Luton star has made just five substitute Premier League appearances without starting a single league match for Chelsea this season.

But he has had a more prominent role in Carabao Cup and Conference League matches.

  9. 'Guehi would cost too much' when Chalobah 'already on the books'published at 16:51 7 January

    Your views banner
Trevor Chalobah for Crystal Palace Image source, Getty Images

We asked for your views on Chelsea potentially recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace, or buying Marc Guehi from the south London outfit to try to help solve the Blues' defensive issues through injuries.

Here are some of your comments:

Osman: Signing Mark Guehi would help a lot. I'm sure he would quickly transform our defence because of his presence and strength. His timely interceptions are excellent as well.

Dan: Guehi would cost us too much and the club clearly wants to move on from Chalobah. I'm more interested in a more senior centre-back to partner Levi Colwill or Wesley Fofana when fit - like a Fikayo Tomori...

Wendy: We should get Chalobah back. Josh Acheampong showed he is a reliable player in central defence, but can also play at right-back. Chalobah is a good player. Seems pointless spending more money when we already have access to players.

Oliver: Would absolutely love Guehi at the club, but it feels unnecessary as we've just recalled Aaron Anselmino from Boca Juniors and Chalobah is out on loan and happy to return.

Brady: I would recall Chalobah as buying a player in January for a high price might not work well for us. We could get a better option at the end of the season. Why waste money when we have him already on the books?

Simty: Chalobah was a central defensive midfielder, who converted to centre-half and has often filled in at right-back. Given that Enzo Maresca likes his defenders to invert into midfield, what better option could there be?

Tammay: Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi should never start for Chelsea, injuries or not. Murillo from Nottingham Forest would be a great long-term solution.

  10. Why does Maresca make so few changes?published at 12:33 7 January

    Will Faulks
    Fan writer

If there is one thing that football fans have in common from the very top of the Champions League to the lowest reaches of the amateur game, it is moaning about substitutions.

Look at any manager who has ever been sacked, and you will find complaints about their use of changes: too many, too few, too early, too late, too defensive, too reckless.

Perhaps it is because so much of what a manager does is obscure. Fans are hardly going to have an opinion on their training sessions or team talks when they can't see them. But subs are something concrete they can understand and are the most direct form of control the coach has of events on the pitch once the game has started.

So it should be no surprise that the first real issue Chelsea fans have with Enzo Maresca following his excellent start to life at Stamford Bridge are with his in-game changes. As the season has gone on, Maresca has used fewer and fewer of them - a baffling strategy given we have entered the period where players start to get tired and rest and rotation becomes more important than ever.

Chelsea make fewer changes than most teams in the Premier League and they make them later. Given the trend of the last few weeks, they will surely soon be last in the league in both. Considering the sheer quality on our bench, the decisions become even more puzzling.

Maresca has had to address this stance a few times already and is quickly growing tired of it, as a snappy response to a journalist after Saturday's draw with Crystal Palace showed.

He says he does not want to make change for change's sake - which just denies the evidence of recent results and data suggesting his team suffers late in games.

Torino have made a bid of about £10m plus add-ons to sign Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei.

Monza and Feyenoord are also understood to be interested, with Napoli and Lazio also being linked in recent weeks.

Casadei, 21, has made six appearances for Chelsea this season but has not featured in the Premier League.

The Italy Under-21 international was not involved in either of the recent matchday squads for games against Ipswich and Crystal Palace.

Chelsea signed Casadei from Inter Milan's academy in 2022 for an initial £12.6m.

  12. Would re-signing Guehi or recalling Chalobah help Chelsea's defence?published at 10:47 7 January

    Have your say banner

Chelsea appear to be keen to strengthen their defensive line during the January transfer window in the absence of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.

They are interested in re-signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi but could also recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at the South London club.

Argentinian defender Aaron Anselmino has already returned from Boca Juniors.

Who do you think Enzo Maresca needs? Should Chelsea pay Palace for Guehi, or would recalling Chalobah and Anselmino be enough to get them through the next few months? Alternatively, is there another defender that you think should be on the club's radar?

  13. Will freshness be key in race for Europe?published at 08:50 7 January

Chief football writer Phil McNulty byline banner

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been answering your questions.

R asked: Will their lack of European fixtures favour Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United in the race for a Champions League place? Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Chelsea (who look to have the easiest route) will all want a say. On current form, I think Liverpool and Arsenal get two spots. Who gets the others?

Phil answered: It will certainly help them to keep a freshness about their squads, as we saw when Newcastle United were in the Champions League last season and their league performances declined.

On current form, I still say Manchester City and - with not much confidence at all - Chelsea. And I mean not much confidence at all.

  14. Chalobah has loan recall clause but Palace 'planning' for him to staypublished at 13:40 6 January

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Chelsea do have a recall option on Trevoh Chalobah, who is on loan at Crystal Palace.

The Blues have injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana and started the match with the Eagles on Saturday with 18-year-old Josh Acheampong at centre-back.

It was Acheampong's first Premier League start, with Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi on the bench after the youngster was promoted into Enzo Maresca's first team squad.

Chelsea's decision around Chalobah's potential recall could be impacted by Wesley Fofana's injury situation.

Maresca effectively ruled the 24-year-old central defender out for remainder of the season last week but sources close to players insist he can be back sooner.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner was asked about the possibility of Chalobah going back to his parent club following the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.

"I could see that there was Disasi and Tosin on the bench," said Glasner.

"I don't know if you need [more] if you play with two. I was just reading that Anselmino comes back so they have five [centre-backs].

"I don't know if they need eight. I don't know what they are planning. Trevoh is doing very well for us and we are planning with him."

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Here are some of your comments:

    Palace fans

Glen: The team have to be more consistent. The first half was far too respectful and we just let Chelsea play. The second half was like watching a different team. The energy and pace of the play was excellent and what is needed. Overall, it was a decent match. My only worry is the lack of depth in the squad at the moment.

Derek: A massive point considering Chelsea are one of our bogey sides. There is a lot to look forward to, given the long-awaited returns of Matheus Franca and Adam Wharton.

Adam: I just love the fact that Chelsea can't beat us! Yes, we weren't great in the first half, but the next 45 minutes were epic. We fought and created chances. It was good to watch. Well done Oliver Glasner - that must have been one hell of a half-time team talk.

Al: Three months ago, we would have lost this game, but the team is showing a resilience, a togetherness and a refusal to give up. We had injuries and loan restrictions but we still showed our potential. Consistency is key and hopefully 2025 will bring this, under Glasner's guidance.

    Chelsea fans

Freddie: It's an age-old issue that has come back to haunt us; many chances created and not enough taken. I can't fault anyone in particular, except for Nicola Jackson, who should have put away at least one goal. But it doesn't look great after the last few games. Josh Acheampong looked amazing at centre-back though, could he be the answer to our injury woes?

Jarvis: Enzo Maresca has no Plan B. He lacks the technical ability to change the team's shape during the game. Every time we go ahead but we don't score a second or third when we are actually bossing the game. The opposition suss us out and get on top. We need a world-class striker. It's pointless making all these chances if we don't score from them. Too early for Maresca out?

Jamie: Substitutes were far too late again, just like against Fulham. Either go for the second goal and change a winger or add some reinforcements to the midfield. We desperately need Romeo Lavia back.

John: Every team has a wobble and as long as Maresca can get us a Champions League spot, he has done his job properly.

  16. Chelsea 'not killing off games'published at 11:33 6 January

Chelsea's winless Premier League run extended to four games when they failed to hold on to their narrow one-goal lead against Crystal Palace at Selhurt Park on Saturday.

Despite dominating throughout the first half, Chelsea were made to pay for their inability to grab a second when the home side struck late to salvage a draw.

"There are a few alarm bells ringing because they had 15 attempts against Palace and only one on target," said former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily podcast. "That is a big problem and not just for the centre-forward, but for the whole team.

"They are too reliant on Cole Palmer. Jadon Sancho had a good game and I think his game has gone to a new level since joining, but I am a bit worried that Chelsea are not killing off games.

"Enzo Maresca was right and they were probably never in the title race but we had to talk about them because they were high in the league.

"It is now a worry if they can still finish in the top four. I believe they can and it is just a blip they are going through but it is going to be an interesting end to the season."

The fact that Jadon Sancho has already matched his Manchester United assist total in 68 games fewer at Chelsea shows you how much he is enjoying his football under Enzo Maresca.

That was clear to see when I spoke to him for Match of the Day about setting up Cole Palmer for the Blues' opener at Selhurst Park.

A brilliant, instinctive dummy through his legs, making Chris Richards look silly as he spun around him and collected the ball with still plenty of work to do, to then pick out Palmer.

He was back doing the dirty work in his own box in the second half too.

Quite understandably labelled a flop at Old Trafford, Sancho is swiftly finding his mojo again.

At 24 years old, there are plenty of miles left on the clock and it is clear to see he wants to prove the critics and doubters wrong.
