  1. Edwards 'someone that everyone wants to work hard for'published at 09:50 28 November 2023

    Media caption,

Luton striker Jacob Brown, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club about playing under Rob Edwards:

"He's just a top guy and I can't speak highly enough of him. From the minute I spoke to him before I joined the club, I had such a good feeling. To meet him in person and see how he works, he's really good and I think he's only helping me get better as a player.

"He makes you feel confident. It's hard to explain but the environment there is around the club - it's such a great place to be. Even when we've not got good results but we've performed well, we always try to take the positives. On the grass, he's always trying to motivate you and he's someone that everyone wants to work hard for."

Leicester defender Conor Coady added: "Rob was our assistant at Wolves when I was there and I think he's top-drawer. You could see what his sessions were like and how he wanted to play football, it was fantastic.

"You look at the culture that's been created at Luton and, especially when they play at home, they look like they can win any game. The culture he and the players have created and how they're going about their business is fantastic to see and it's full credit to everyone there."

  3. Your views on Saturday's gamepublished at 12:05 27 November 2023

    Your views banner

We asked for your thoughts on Saturday's match between Luton and Crystal Palace.

Here are some of your comments:

    Luton fans

Sue: It was on the cards, it was always going to come. A team that play for each other and respect each other will always come out on top. Onwards and definitely upwards. Thomas Kaminski or Tom Lockyer were joint-players of match.

Ian: This was a must-win game, and the players delivered. We've let a few points slip since the season started (v Burnley, Wolves, Spurs for instance) so it was good to see that our players’ heads didn’t drop when Palace scored - great comeback to grab three points.

Stuart: Barkley is making a big difference and if he stays fit we have a good chance of staying up. Kaminski is an outstanding shot stopper but his kicking needs more work. Osho's return has strengthened us defensively. Overall a great performance against the sort of teams that we have to win points from.

JB: Brilliant performance. Brilliant atmosphere. We are back where we deserve to be. Arsenal here under the lights, they won’t be looking forward to it. We certainly will. COYH.

    Crystal Palace fans

Andy: Another disappointing performance and one has to ask why? With respect to Everton who deserved their three points against us, Palace should be beating teams or at least not losing to the Toffees and Luton. Need to see an improvement or otherwise we’ll be in a relegation fight.

Gavin: This result is difficult to accept. We know that each game is a challenge, but we were playing a team who had not won at home. The team’s performance was simply not good enough. Even harder to take is the fact that we managed to get back in the game with a wonder goal from Olise and then lack that mentality and determination to hold on for a point.

Petey: It's a depressing sign of our lack of ambition & failure to try and get a striker. We accept mid-table mediocrity as the high-point of our existence. All rather pathetic.

Dave: Well, what can I say, another defeat under Hodgson, it proves he's out of ideas and out of touch. If we can't beat the likes of Luton, what chance do we stand against the rest? None at all. Time for him to put his feet up and give someone else, who's in touch with the real world, a chance. I see 'flapper' Johnson was on form again.

  4. 'Luton look like a team who are getting to grips with the Premier League'published at 08:19 27 November 2023

Luton's results this season, highlighting games lost by more than one goal

The Match of the Day panel praised Luton's competitiveness after securing their first home win of the season on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

Gary Lineker said: "It's a huge three points for Luton, first home win. Rob Edwards mentioned fight, determination, desire and quality. Those characteristics were very evident.

"Yeah they were," added Ian Wright.

"They look like a team to me who are getting to grips with the Premier League. When you look at the first couple of games of the season - the Brighton and Chelsea games - they were 4-1 and 3-0 but after that you have to go down to the Aston Villa game before they lost by two or more goals again.

"They're very competitive and I thought they were again against Palace. They're putting in a real shift and I'm delighted for them."

  6. Luton 2-1 Crystal Palace: What Edwards saidpublished at 18:39 25 November 2023

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards speaking to PLP: "I'm incredibly proud of the players today. It's the second time we've scored and someone has put one in the top corner immediately after but to go and get the winning goal... I'm really proud of them.

"You can't guarantee a win in football but the desire, the fight and the quality was all there for us. They put pressure on us but we got a little bit of luck.

"The goals were great. The set-pieces are obviously an area we work hard on. I thought Teden Mengi was outstanding today and he deserved his goal. The second goal - it was a phenomenal pass and Jacob Brown sprinted through to get that one-touch finish. It was a brilliant counter-attacking goal.

"It ended up being 13 minutes [stoppage-time]. I aged a little bit during that time! The fans were incredible. It was the first home win and it was a long time coming. We'll enjoy this tonight.

"We are a team that don't die, don't quit and keep fighting. We have some weapons. We know it will be tough and a real challenge but we have a good group. It's nice we got the points today we feel some of our performances deserve."

  7. Luton 2-1 Crystal Palace: Key statspublished at 17:30 25 November 2023

    • Luton earned their first home league win of the season, and their first at Kenilworth Road in the top-flight since April 1992 (2-0 vs Aston Villa).

    • Crystal Palace have lost four of their last five Premier League games (W1), as many as they had in their previous 18 since Roy Hodgson’s return to the club (W8 D6 L4).

    • Half of Luton’s Premier League goals this season have come from set piece situations (6/12, including penalties), the second highest ratio in the division after Arsenal (54% before their game against Brentford).

    • Making his first Premier League start of the season, Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise scored his first league goal since January against Manchester United.

    • Jacob Brown’s winner for Luton came just three minutes and 59 seconds after he came off the bench, with four of the Hatters’ 12 Premier League goals this season coming via substitutes.

    • Crystal Palace have had over 60% possession in each of their last two Premier League games, but have gone on to lose them both (67% v Everton, 61% v Luton).

  8. Analysis: Luton Town 2-1 Crystal Palacepublished at 17:29 25 November 2023

    Adam Millington, BBC Sport

It took a determined performance at Kenilworth Road for promoted Luton to finally register their first home win of the Premier League season.

Crystal Palace went ahead through Odsonne Edouard, his goal was chalked off from handball, and that moment inspired Rob Edwards’ men to their battling victory.

They had shown some moments of promise throughout the game but struggled to find the required final ball inside the box – until their late surge, that is.

Teden Mengi was switched on to tap home after a corner was flicked in his path, and Luton didn’t let up despite his goal being cancelled out within two minutes by Michael Olise’s equaliser.

They continued to toil in the final third and it eventually paid dividends, an expert Chiedozie Ogbene delivery finding Jacob Brown to deal the winning blow.

Luton’s persistence gave them a crucial three points and finally put an end to their poor home record.

It also steered the Hatters four points clear of relegation, a fact which could be incredibly helpful given their difficult upcoming fixtures; they take on Brentford, Arsenal and Manchester City in their next three games.

However, after that Bournemouth and Sheffield United are among their opponents, and Edwards should hope Saturday’s performance gives them hope of picking up further points in those encounters.

  9. 'It's such a good feeling'published at 17:20 25 November 2023

    Jacob BrownImage source, Getty Images

Luton Town goalscorer Jacob Brown speaking to PLP: "It's a mad feeling to get my first goal and the main thing was getting that three points. It's such a good feeling and we've earned it.

"There's been a few times where we've scored and conceded after. We knew we had to give it our all to hold on at the end and the feeling in the dressing room is going to be top now.

"As the season has gone on we've got better and better. We're all working hard each week and you could see the support from the fans in the last 12 minutes. That helped massively."

  10. Full-time: Luton 2-1 Crystal Palacepublished at 17:06 25 November 2023

    Have your say graphic

Jacob Brown scored a dramatic late winner as Luton Town beat Crystal Palace to earn their first victory at home in the Premier League the season.

It took until the second half for the game to spark into life, with one of the few moments of note in the first period when Odsonne Edouard's goal was ruled out because the ball ricocheted off Luton defender Tom Lockyer and onto the Palace striker's hand.

That escape energised Luton and Teden Mengi poked home a loose ball in the box after a flick-on from a corner to break the deadlock.

But a fine piece of individual skill from Michael Olise saw the Palace winger chop inside and curl past Thomas Kaminski from a tight angle to level within two minutes.

However Scotland striker Brown put the Hatters back again when he turned home a pinpoint Chiedozie Ogbene pass from close range in the 81st minute.

Luton are now four points clear of the relegation zone while Crystal Palace sit in 15th place.

  11. Luton Town v Crystal Palace: Sutton's predictionspublished at 11:02 25 November 2023

    Sutton's Predictions image

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

This week, he takes on Barry Can't Swim, aka DJ and producer Joshua Mannie - who is an Everton fan.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

There is no question that Luton are in a relegation scrap but I do like what they are trying to do under Rob Edwards.

I still think they will go down but, based on what we've seen from them recently, I've got far more belief in their chances of staying up than I did at the start of the season.

Still, this is the kind of game I think Palace boss Roy Hodgson will relish. He won't be bothered about possession statistics, he just wants the points.

I don't think Palace will concede and, going forward, Eberechi Eze is fully fit again. He could be the player who makes the difference for the Eagles in what should be a close game.

    Barry Can't Swim's prediction: 0-1

I would love to see Luton stay up, but I'm not convinced. Palace to take this one in a low-scoring game.

  12. 'I hope Roy will remember me now' - Edwardspublished at 17:11 24 November 2023

Rob Edwards and Roy HodgsonImage source, Getty Images

Rob Edwards has joked that he hopes Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson now knows him as he prepares to face on Saturday the man who he replaced as Watford manager at the start of the 2022-23 season.

Hodgson said at the time he had not yet met and "would not recognise" Edwards, who was sacked in September 2022 before guiding Luton to promotion to the Premier League.

"We've met since - hopefully he'd remember me now!" Edwards said on the eve of welcoming Hodgson to Kenilworth Road.

"I'd be the same thinking 'who's this guy from League Two who has come in and taken over?'. It was a little bit of a whirlwind situation and it didn't last too long either.

"I've got lot of respect for Roy. He's had, and is having, an unbelievable football career. He's at the top of the game still. I don't want to be doing it at his age - I don't know how he's still doing it to be honest.

"I've got a lot of time and respect for him but it's going to be a really tough game tomorrow. His teams are always really organised and he's done a fantastic job back there [at Palace] again."

  13. Edwards on Kabore, the FA fine and 'doing the basics' against Palacepublished at 15:23 24 November 2023

    Nat Hayward, BBC Sport

Luton manager Rob Edwards has been speaking to the media ahead of Saturday's Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Edwards confirmed that Issa Kabore is out for Saturday with a concussion but he hopes to have him back for next weekend. He added that he is "hopeful" Chiedozie Ogbene will be fit after missing Northern Ireland's matches with an ankle injury.

    • On the club being fined for homophobic chanting against Brighton: "Our fans are amazing but of course we, and I, don't condone that. The game is for everyone. We want to bring the noise like we always do but in a respectful way. We've been fined and rightly so and it's really important we represent the club in the right way."

    • Edwards said his side must play Palace with the "same mindset" as they had in good performances when facing Manchester United and Liverpool recently and "do the basics right".

    • He said Saturday's game is "not a must-win" but "one we can target as our next opportunity" to get points.

    • He added he has "not given a second thought" to Everton's 10-point deduction that saw the Hatters move out of the relegation zone at their expense and that "they could be above us again by the end of the weekend if we don't take care of our business".

    • On Saturday's opponents Crystal Palace: "It will be a really tough game. Roy's teams are always very well organised. He's done a fantastic job back there again. They are always very clear in what they're doing and they have some individuals I think can play for any team in the league. They're a very young, vibrant team going forward."

  14. Luton accept FA finepublished at 17:50 23 November 2023

Luton have pledged to do further work with supporter groups to offer education around discrimination after accepting a £120,000 fine for a misconduct charge from the Football Association.

Hatters fans were punished for homophobic chanting during their game at Brighton on the opening day of the season.

The club accepted the charge and as well of the fine, have been issued with a two-year action plan by the FA.

The club said: "As an inclusive, family-oriented Club, Luton Town abhors abusive chanting such as this and has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination of all kinds. It is not acceptable towards anyone in football or wider society, either in person or online.

"Those involved were committing a criminal offence and anyone subsequently identified will be issued with a club ban and face potential police investigation.

"We will continue to promote the ‘Love Football. Protect The Game’ campaign, which this season has focused especially on fan behaviour, and will work further with supporter groups to educate and inform on all forms of discriminatory acts to ensure that watching Luton Town is a safe and welcoming experience for everyone."

  15. Luton face two new injury worries from international dutypublished at 16:57 22 November 2023

    Luton Town expert view banner

Geoff Doyle, BBC Three Counties Radio

The international break has brought some concern for Luton before Saturday's match against Crystal Palace. Two key players will need to be assessed before the visit of the Eagles.

Issa Kabore had to be substituted while playing for Burkina Faso on Friday. Details of the medical incident have not been confirmed but if it is serious it would be such a shame as the wing-back, on loan from Manchester City, has been in good form down the right for the Hatters.

The other big worry is Chiedozie Ogbene. The wide player has been one of the stand-out players for Luton this season but he missed the Republic of Ireland's internationals with an ankle injury and the way manager Stephen Kenny was talking about him did not sound good.

This week, Ogbene has been clocked as the fastest player in the Premier League. His pace has caused real problems for opposition teams (as well as his all-round game) and his absence would be a big blow.

On the positive front though, the break will have given others in the physio room a chance to recover further so there could be better news on the likes of Reece Burke and Amari Bell.

After Palace, it is Brentford so two games against teams in the bottom half of the table. The Hatters need to try and exploit that considering the following two are Arsenal and Manchester City.

Out of the relegation zone as a result of Everton's points deduction, the next two fixtures are an opportunity to stay out of it.

Commentary of Luton Town v Crystal Palace on Saturday from 15:00 GMT on BBC Three Counties Radio

  16. Luton Town v Crystal Palace: Pick of the statspublished at 10:42 22 November 2023

    • This is the first meeting between Luton Town and Crystal Palace since the 2006-07 Championship campaign, with the home side winning both games 2-1 back then.

    • Palace have won just one of their past eight away league games against Luton (D3 L4) - 1-0 in April 1994 thanks to a Chris Coleman strike.

    • The Hatters have won just one of their opening 12 Premier League matches (D3 L8), their fewest victories at this stage of a top-flight season since 1974-75 (W1 D6 L5), when they went on to finish 20th and were relegated.

    • Palace have won five of their past 11 away league matches since Roy Hodgson returned to the club (D2 L4), as many as in their previous 28 on the road (D9 L14).

    • Only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (13 for Darwin Nunez) and Aston Villa's Moussa Diaby (11 for Ollie Watkins) have created more chances for a team-mate than Luton’s Alfie Doughty has for Carlton Morris (eight) in this season's Premier League. Doughty has played the second-most successful crosses (26), while Morris has won the second-most aerial duels (54).

  17. 'Start Morris and Adebayo together'published at 13:03 17 November 2023

    Your views

We asked you to come up with one thing you would change about Luton's season so far.

Here are some of your comments:

Christian: I wouldn't change anything, but going forwards, start Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo together with Chiedozie Ogbene behind in the 3-4-1-2 formation that got us up. Morris has been so isolated on his own in every game so far (and referees aren't giving him anything)

Jamie: Other than a few of the results, I would not change a thing. Great manager, great owners, a fantastic group of players and unbelievable fans.

James: There are only two things to change about our season so far. 1. The pundits. We don't care. So if you have nothing nice to say, talk about another club. 2. Holding on for a win against Liverpool and beating Wolves. But so far, so good.

Terry: As a team, they need to be less scared of the opposition. Opponents are too easily getting into their heads. They are good enough to stay in this league -and they need to start believing in themselves.

Neale: We’ve adapted quite well to the Premier League, but you simply have to put chances away or you just get punished and lose games that could have been drawn or won.

  18. Will break improve injury problems?published at 12:57 17 November 2023

Jordan Clark of Luton Town during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Luton TownImage source, Getty Images

BBC Three Counties' Simon Oxley has been discussing 30-year-old winger Jordan Clark's return, and how less injuries might help the Hatters, on the Luton in the Prem podcast: "He didn't have huge time to take affect in the last game [against Manchester United]. He was only on for 15 minutes or so but I think he clearly brings something different to the table, in terms of determination and a desire to do well.

"Can he do it at that top level? Well, let's wait and see. It won't be through any shortage of effort on his part, he's desperate to get involved. He's another one of those players who have come through the divisions and worked his way up throughout his career. It was great to see him back.

"I assume that there will be some players returning defensively after the international break, or some will obviously be closer to returning. Amari'i Bell hasn't gone with Jamaica this time around, so hopefully he is edging a little bit closer to fitness.

"Hopefully those that are away [on international duty] come back fit, Kabore and Nakamba in particular."
