  1. Edwards on Barkley, Ogbene's excellent start and Spurspublished at 15:28 6 October 2023

Luton town manager Rob Edwards has spoken to the media before Luton's match against Tottenham on Saturday.

Here's what he had to say:

    • Amari'i Bell is missing with a hamstring problem. The club are still determining the extent of the injury.

    • Ross Barkley has been training with the squad and "can feature" tomorrow.

    • On the challenge of coping with the intensity in the Premier League: "The intensity has gone up a notch or two. We've brought in some really good athletes and people who can handle it. In terms of our running stats we're doing very well so I'm pleased with that. I've got to make sure we’re fresh, get training right and then pick the right team. We’re going to have to run hard in every single game."

    • Edwards says he's been "very impressed" with Tottenham: "They’ve been excellent. I really like what they’ve done, and we know how talented the players are. With them losing a talisman in Kane I like how they’ve adapted to life without him. They are fast, aggressive, press high, clear style and they pose a lot of threat. This is why we got promoted, these are the kind of games we look forward to. We want to give a good account of ourselves."

    • On what Kenilworth Road will be like as it welcomes its first 'big six' Premier League club: "It will be quite strange, early kick-off on a Saturday. You hear that the atmospheres aren’t as good, but hopefully they find their voices. You have to enjoy these occasions, world-class players coming, household names, people they’ve been watching on TV for a long time. You only enjoy it when you compete and play well, and we think we can do something tomorrow."

    • Edwards says his players are "learning quickly" as they adjust to life in the Premier League, stating: "They are seeing things quicker and adjusting to the level and what the games throw at us. We’ve been creating, limiting the opposition. The lads are focused, working hard and you can see them buying into everything. I’m really pleased with the stats and data that shows we should be above where we currently are. Hopefully we’ll get the rewards."

    • On Chiedozie Ogbene’s excellent start and versatility to the team: "When we brought him in we knew he had a lot of flexibility. He's got a lot of good attributes. There's not really any ceiling for him. He's a diamond of a lad, he wants to perform and he's been really effective wherever he plays. Really diligent, real team player, he can go either side and in the middle as well."

  2. Luton Town v Tottenham: Pick of the statspublished at 13:32 4 October 2023

    • This is the first meeting between Luton Town and Tottenham since a goalless draw in a top-flight game at Kenilworth Road in March 1992.

    • Spurs are unbeaten in eight Premier League games (W6 D2), with no side currently on a longer run without defeat.

    • Luton have won just one of their past 10 home league games against London sides (D5 L4) - with that victory coming against QPR in October last season.

    • Tottenham have had more shots than any other Premier League side this season (138), with their average of 19.7 per game their highest on record in a campaign since 1997-98. They've had at least 20 efforts in three of their past four league games, as many as they had done in their previous 28.

    • Luton's Rob Edwards is looking to be the first Welsh manager to win a Premier League game against Tottenham since Mark Hughes with Stoke City in May 2015. Since then, Welshmen have drawn four and lost seven against Spurs - including the past five by an aggregate score of 18-2.

  3. 'We're down, flat and hurting'published at 23:19 3 October 2023

Luton manager Rob Edwards reacts to defeat at home to Burnley: "I'm obviously really disappointed with the result, we're down, flat and hurting because of the manner of it.

"We pushed, we had set-pieces, we went forward in numbers and were brave, aggressive and didn't allow them the control they wanted.

"But we come away with nothing and that hurts.

"The lads gave everything. The fans were clapping at the end and if they're doing that then we're doing the right things, but everybody will be disappointed because we should have taken something from the game."

  4. 'We have to be able to flick that switch'published at 22:40 3 October 2023

    Rob EdwardsImage source, Getty Images

Luton boss Rob Edwards, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am really proud of the players and the performance, I thought they gave everything. I think they shaded the first half, but in the second we completely dominated them, threw everything at them. We had 15 shots inside the box tonight and scored once so that is an area we know we can improve in. When we scored and had the momentum I was lost in the moment too. We have to be able to flick that switch. It was a wonderful finish but there are areas where we can be better. It is disappointing, I almost have to remove the emotion of that goal from my head and think about the performance overall. The fans were engaged, it was a brilliant night and the players were terrific.

"We can control the effort. And if the performance is right you give yourself a chance of getting points on the board. If we don't perform we have no chance this year. We performed well tonight and lost which shows the task we have. It was similar when we played them last season. We played well and they won 1-0. They are a good team and difficult to play against but I thought we showed that tonight.

"I thought we had momentum for the whole second half. We were pressing and creating chances. Didn't take them. And then when we did I thought this could be a brilliant night when we turn it around late on. Credit to them for finding a way to win.

"It is a big game now at the weekend against a big, big team. So let's pick ourselves up, recover well and get focused for that one. We will have disappointments this season and we need to be able to stick our chests out, believe in what we are doing. We are all pulling in the same, right direction. The fans will stick with us when they see us putting that effort in. They are proud of these players."

  5. 'We are a team and we do bounce back'published at 22:32 3 October 2023

Luton defender Reece Burke speaking to Premier League Productions: "We came out firing trying to get back in the game. Obviously the lads did really well, we managed to get the equaliser but conceding then was disappointing to be fair.

"I probably should have got a little bit closer - but the quality from him to put it into the top corner. But overall disappointed."

On positives to take: "Obviously we are disappointed from today but we are team and we do bounce back.

"I’m looking forward to the weekend and as I say we need to make Kenilworth Road a difficult place to come."

  6. Luton Town 1-2 Burnley: Key statspublished at 21:42 3 October 2023

    • Burnley have ended a run of 10 Premier League games without a win (D2 L8), with this their first since winning 2-1 against Watford in April 2022.

    • Luton Town are still without a win at Kenilworth Road in the Premier League in three attempts (D1 L2). They are the first side to fail to win any of their first three home games in the competition since Blackpool in 2010.

    • Luton have lost two of their last three home league games (D1), as many as in their previous 19 games combined (W10 D7).

    • Lyle Foster bagged his third Premier League goal of the season for Burnley – he is only the fifth South African player to score three goals in a single season, after Philomen Masinga (1994-95), Shaun Bartlett (four times), Benni McCarthy (three times) and Steven Pienaar (three times).

    • Sander Berge registered only his third Premier League assist in 36 appearances, setting up Lyle Foster for Burnley’s goal. All three of his assists have come in different seasons.

    • This match was only the fourth in Premier League history in which neither side named a single player in their starting XI who was born before the Premier League’s first game in August 1992. The oldest player was Luton’s Thomas Kaminski, born in October 1992.

Burnley grabbed their first Premier League victory of the season as they won in a dramatic finale at Luton Town.

The Clarets had only gained one point from a tough opening six games of the season and went ahead at Kenilworth Road when Lyle Foster produced a composed finish after fine work from Sander Berge in first-half stoppage time.

Luton substitute Elijah Adebayo equalised in the 84th minute, finishing after Reece Burke had headed on Tahith Chong's cross.

But Burnley retook the lead just 65 seconds later when Jacob Bruun Larsen cut in from the right and unleashed a stunning shot into the far top corner for what proved to be the winner.

  8. Sutton's predictions: Luton Town v Burnleypublished at 15:00 3 October 2023

    Chris Sutton and Anwar Kumar

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

This game was meant to be played in week two, but was rearranged because of development work at Kenilworth Road.

Sutton and his guest from that week, DJ and producer Anish Kumar, are currently level on 90 points each with only this game left to be played.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

I feel like most people are expecting this game to end up in a draw, but I am going to go for a Burnley win, which would be their first of the season.

My reasoning behind that prediction is that the Clarets have had a tough start in terms of fixtures, starting with Manchester City on the opening weekend as well as playing Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa - they've played Manchester United too, although I'm not sure that qualifies as being 'tough' at the moment.

This is a massive game for both clubs, so I don't think Burnley need or want the win any more than Luton do, it's more that I think they have a little bit more quality in their team than the Hatters do.

I watched Burnley's draw at Nottingham Forest a couple of weeks ago and thought they were a little bit unlucky not to win the game, but this might be the time where they do find a way of getting the three points.

I think it will be close, and if Luton do manage to get back-to-back wins after beating Everton on Saturday, it would be absolutely phenomenal for them and give them real belief that they can stay in the Premier League.

But I just have a sneaky feeling Burnley will edge it. Also, I have a Luton player, Hatters defender Amari'i Bell, in my Fantasy team so this way I get something out of this game whatever happens.

    Kumar's prediction: 0-2

  9. First Premier League win 'a highly significant moment'published at 13:00 3 October 2023

    Luton Town fan's voice graphic

Ollie Kay, We Are Luton Town, external

A win and an all-round solid defensive performance at Everton means that we are officially up and running in the Premier League. Four points on the board, out of the relegation zone, and the first of the promoted trio to win a game in the competition this season.

Although it is still early days, it will not stop the Hatters from dreaming of survival, akin to the 1980s when Luton became quite the escape artists, with Derby County often being the team against whom we would grab the necessary points to ensure survival in the top league.

While discussing Derby, hopefully this goes some way to encourage those who insisted Luton were only here to make up the numbers and that we were likely to beat Derby's long-standing record low points total of 11, that Rob Edwards' side will be doing absolutely everything they can, leaving everything on the pitch after every match.

This is a highly significant moment for Luton Town fans. Our previous top-flight victory came on 25 April 1992 - some 11,480 days before Saturday's victory at Goodison Park.

After that 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Kenilworth Road in front 11,178 spectators, we held our chances of survival entirely in our own hands, needing a victory at Notts County on the final day to ensure our participation in the maiden Premier League season.

Well, 31 years later, here we are again, with pretty much a full season ahead of us. Survival is once more entirely in our own hands. Let's not waste this golden opportunity.

  10. 'Luton went back to basics and it worked'published at 09:50 3 October 2023

    Rob EdwardsImage source, Getty Images

"The Premier League looks ominous for those who support the underdogs," said former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin.

No newly promoted club has ever had fewer than three points after seven Premier League games and managed to avoid the drop.

Dismissed by almost every football pundit, Rob Edwards' team were without a point from their first four Premier League games before surprising many with a draw at home to Wolves and a win at Everton.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards told BBC Match of the Day: "Luton played to their strengths on Saturday and Everton could not get to grips with it.

"Everything they did they went back to basics and it worked. That will give them real confidence."

  11. 'A very special feeling... but we're not getting carried away'published at 09:01 3 October 2023

    Carlton MorrisImage source, Getty Images

Luton Town forward Carlton Morris reflects on the Hatters' first Premier League victory to BBC Three Counties Radio: "I feel like that wasn't even our best performance this season, but if we keep putting in these performances we'll get the points.

"It's a very special feeling [Luton's first Premier League win]. We lost our first four games and it's incredible that we've never felt like the fans were turning on us.

"I felt the last two games we've put forward performances they can be proud of. To get the win for the travelling fans and the ones watching at home is a good feeling as well.

"We're not getting carried away. It's a big game on Tuesday night. We can take confidence from this game going into that, and with the fans behind us I'm looking forward to it."

On adjusting to the life in the Premier League, Morris said: "I back my ability humbly. It's the best league in the world and it's a really tough test every week - but I like to test myself. I'm in this game to test myself. I relish it."

  12. Which newly promoted team is most likely to stay up?published at 17:41 2 October 2023

Newly promoted Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United have all struggled to get off the starting blocks this season. Luton grabbed their first win against Everton at the weekend, but the Clarets and Blades are still struggling on one point each at the bottom of the table.

BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty has been taking questions from supporters all day on our live page here.

NW asked: Based on what we have seen so far, which of the newly promoted teams look best equipped to stay up?

McNulty answered: I tipped Burnley to be the promoted team to stay up so I will have to stick with them, but I have my concerns because they don't seem to have adapted their style of play to face the better opposition in the Premier League, and I wonder where their goals will come from.

If Vincent Kompany can find answers to that, I think they have a chance. I fear the worst for Luton Town and Sheffield United, but what a win for the Hatters at Everton. All this talk of them ending up without a point, or in single figures, was nonsensical and disrespectful.

I also tipped Wolves to struggle, but after beating Manchester City they will have a real lift of confidence.

  13. Edwards on first Premier League win and facing Burnleypublished at 15:37 2 October 2023

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has been speaking to the press before Tuesday's Premier League game against Burnley.

Here are the main headlines from his media conference:

    • Saturday's victory at Everton, Luton's first in the Premier League, did not feel like a "weight off" for the team but Edwards felt the result "was coming". He added: "It's nice to get a win, that's what we're all in the game for, it was a great feeling but then it's back to business quite quickly."

    • On Luton being tipped by many pundits to be relegated: "I might have used that word [disrespectful] with one in particular, but that's because someone is saying they can't take us seriously. People's opinions on whether we will go down or struggle, I understand that because I would think the same. I don’t find that disrespectful at all, that is just how it is and that's fine. I think it is almost 'choose your words carefully about how you talk about us'."

    • Captain Tom Lockyer (eye) and defender Reece Burke (hamstring) should both be fit for the visit of the Clarets.

    • On Tuesday's opponents Burnley: "It is probably a little bit unfair to judge them on results alone because their performances have been very good. I certainly think they can [stay up] and I've believed it from the minute we got promoted that we can do it [too]. It will be very, very difficult and it is a massive challenge."

  14. Luton Town v Burnley: Pick of the statspublished at 14:35 2 October 2023

    • This is the first top-flight meeting between Luton Town and Burnley since the 1974-75 campaign, when the Clarets won home (1-0) and away (3-2).

    • Having lost their first four Premier League games, Luton are now unbeaten in two, and picked up their first win in the competition at Everton on Saturday. The Hatters had conceded nine goals in their first three games this season, but have conceded only once in each of their past three.

    • Burnley have just one point from their six Premier League games this season. They were winless in their first seven matches in their past two top-flight campaigns, but have never before started a league season with six or more defeats from their opening seven games.

    • Luton are unbeaten in their past 15 home league games played on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (W8 D7).

    • Luca Koleosho has created more chances (seven), had more touches in the opposition box (18) and completed more dribbles (18) than any other Burnley player in the league this season.

  15. 'We've got to put a time limit on how happy we are'published at 14:02 2 October 2023

    Teden MengiImage source, Getty Images

Luton Town defender Teden Mengi, speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after helping the Hatters to their first Premier League win: "We're all happy, but we've got to put a time limit on how happy we are - remember the feeling of winning and take it into the next game.

"Since I joined, it's been instilled in me that we're a team. There's no individuals here and that showed. I'm proud of the boys and we got it over the line. We all know what's required of us to get the result we wanted.

"On a personal note, it was a Premier League debut for me. It's something that I needed and it was a tough test.

"It's a big thing for us [not being in the relegation zone] and there's another great opportunity against Burnley. We need to take the momentum into that game and kick on."

  16. Your views on Saturday's gamepublished at 12:32 2 October 2023

    Your views banner

We asked for your views on Saturday's game between Everton and Luton Town.

Here are some of your comments:

    Everton fans

Jonesy: Poor team selection from Dyche moving Garner out of the centre after two decent performances there. Also, no width! Harrison and Danjuma benched. Gueye often furthest forward! Poor finishing yes, but one dimensional, trying to thread passes through the centre until Harrison came on. Dyche can also change the story by sticking with a winning formula.

Blue: Here we go again. Luton came to Goodison looking for their first win. Bring on Everton. It’s always about which Everton turns up - on Saturday the Blues were again dreadful at home. I think Evertonians are again in for a long, nail-biting season. There is no urgency and desire. We needed a win and failed miserably.

Danny: There isn’t an Evertonian on the planet who didn’t see that result coming a mile off. Not had a win yet? Coming to Goodison? Don’t worry! We’ve got your back. Season in, season out. Utter drivel supporting this club.

Russell: We dominated the majority of the game but we just weren't good enough in the final third. They came at us early on but didn't cause too many problems until they had set-pieces. They took a two-goal lead and defended pretty well, but we had more than enough opportunities to come back. Need to be more clinical with shots.

    Luton Town fans

Gary: Thoroughly deserved victory. To a man, they gave their all. We need to do this performance every game. I'm so proud of the team and all the backroom staff. We know it will be a tough campaign, but as long as we give our all, that is all we can ask for.

Nathan: Hard work, digging in, you get your rewards. What a performance from the team today. This victory shows all of the hard work over the years and this win is for the fans.

Stephen: Garth Crooks - what’s the score? Garth Crooks, Garth Crooks - what’s the score?

Dave: Why would Everton be embarrassed? Should they not get beaten by #teamslikeLuton? We are a proper club - top to bottom. Owned and run by fans and with no real debt. Even if we sink, that won’t change. I’m sure Everton would swap that position! Great performance showing guts, determination and whole club togetherness and a deserved three points.

  18. Everton 1-2 Luton: Analysispublished at 20:57 30 September 2023

Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport at Goodison Park

Before this game, Luton had only taken one point from six matches and had become many observers' favourites to make an immediate return to the Championship.

But here they showed signs that they may be far more than also-rans this term.

There were joyous scenes at full-time as the Luton players and staff went over to the travelling supporters in their corner of the stadium, where they were serenaded by chants lauding manager Rob Edwards and their prospects of remaining in the division.

The Hatters were in dreamland when skipper Tom Lockyer opening the scoring and Carlton Morris doubled their lead and although Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back, they held on for a famous victory.

Edwards said: "I'm just very, very proud of the players and pleased for the club," he said.

"I know it's a big moment, I get that. I don't want this to come across in any kind of arrogant way but I expected us to [win] today, I really did. I told the boys before the game, 'I know this is going to be a good day'."
