  1. Luton 1-0 Man City: Key statspublished at 16:38 10 December 2023

    • This was Manchester City’s second away Premier League win after conceding the first goal in 2023-24 (also 3-1 v West Ham in September), more than they recorded across 2021-22 (1) and 2022-23 (0) combined in the competition.

    • Having lost none of the first three Premier League games in which they had been ahead (W2 D1), Luton have since lost both of their last two matches in the competition despite taking a lead in each.

    • City have fallen 1-0 behind in three successive Premier League games for the first time since November 2019 - which was during the last season they failed to win the title.

    • Jack Grealish scored the 50th goal of his English club career in all competitions, and his 25th in the Premier League. His strike to put Man City 2-1 ahead came just 171 seconds after Bernardo Silva had equalised.

    • Elijah Adebayo is Luton's top Premier League scorer this season (4 goals), scoring in back-to-back games for the first time in the division.

Manchester City needed a second-half comeback to beat Luton Town at Kenilworth Road and end their four-match winless run in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola's side were facing back-to-back league defeats for the first time since December 2019 when Elijah Adebayo gave Luton the lead in first-half stoppage time, rising highest at the back post to head in Andros Townsend's cross.

But Bernardo Silva latched on to a loose ball in the penalty area and equalised for the visitors with a fine curling effort.

Three minutes later City completed the turnaround when Jack Grealish converted Julian Alvarez's low cross.

Victory means the champions stay fourth, four points behind leaders Liverpool, while Luton remain third from bottom, four points off safety.

  4. Luton v Manchester City: Sutton's predictionspublished at 10:57 10 December 2023

    Sutton's predictions

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on actor Dougray Scott, who stars in the new season of high-stakes drama Vigil.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3

There is no way Manchester City won't win this game. They have to.

Rodri is back, which will help them defensively, but they will need to have far more ideas going forward than they showed at Villa Park, where they had only two shots at goal.

Luton have already pushed Liverpool and Arsenal close at Kenilworth Road in the past few weeks - conceding a last-gasp equaliser against the Reds and losing to the Gunners in stoppage time.

They will make things tricky for City too, and I can see them scoring at least once. I just think City will turn up for this one and get the job done.

    Dougray's prediction: 1-5

  5. Luton 'more than capable of giving it a go' against Man Citypublished at 17:00 8 December 2023

Three Counties Radio - Luton in the Prem

BBC Three Counties Radio trio Luke Ashmead, Geoff Doyle and Simon Oxley have been discussing Luton Town's game against champions Manchester City on Sunday.

Doyle: "I watched the game against Aston Villa, it was as bad as I’ve seen Manchester City play. It is not a crisis. It was just one defeat. Aston Villa are brilliant at home and the other games were draws against top, top sides. So let’s not make out like they are struggling, but there is no doubt they did play poorly against Villa, but are still a phenomenal side."

Ashmead: "Pep Guardiola will go into this game [against Luton] thinking 'we have to win this game no matter what'. They are six points off leaders Arsenal. There is a long way until the end of the season and City traditionally end the season brilliantly, but they won’t want the margin getting any bigger."

Oxley on who will play for Luton: "It depends on who's available. [Issa] Kabore isn’t going to because City are his parent club but I think he had a decent game against Arsenal. They're more than capable of giving it a go. It will be interesting to see how much it has taken out of them physically and mentally the other night. That may mean he [Rob Edwards] switches and goes with three that came on instead of the three that started."

Doyle on the Hatters taking on top teams: "[Newcastle defender] Dan Burn was saying on the Monday Night Club podcast that he was amazed at the players' concentration levels, with games after games in quick succession. Luton have now got to do that on Saturday, Tuesday and Saturday against top teams like Arsenal and Manchester City."

  6. 'We're expecting the best and that’s what we’re preparing for'published at 15:43 8 December 2023

Rob Edwards applaudsImage source, Getty Images

Luton boss Rob Edwards said Manchester City's recent form "doesn't make a difference to us".

Pep Guardiola's side head to Kenilworth Road on Sunday on a run of four Premier League games without a win, but Edwards is still expecting a tough test.

"I'm excited that we’re playing them, I think the whole football club should be as well," he said.

"Look what they’ve done in recent years - they’re a winning machine. We’re expecting the best and that’s what we’re preparing for. Their recent run of not winning doesn’t make a difference to us."

Edwards said sharing the touchline with Guardiola is a "privilege" and something he is fully embracing.

"We’ve got the best managers in the world in this league, we are really lucky, and he is the best," he said.

"I remember watching his Bayern Munich team and falling in love with the team and what they were doing. My favourite ever game of football is that second leg [of their Champions League] semi-final against Atletico Madrid. It will be a privilege to go up against him and his team."

  7. Edwards on recovering from Arsenal, Lockyer fitness and Man Citypublished at 15:10 8 December 2023

    Katie Catherall, BBC Sport

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has addressed the media before his side host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • On Luton's narrow 4-3 defeat to Arsenal: "I think I've just about recovered. It was an incredible night and that’s why I’m sure Arsenal will go very deep in all competitions and fight for those trophies. We couldn’t quite hang on but Kenilworth Road was rocking. It was a special night. To push them all the way is a huge credit to the players. There was lots of positives to take away."

    • Edwards was asked about his style of play which he has branded "boring" in the past: "I don’t think I’ve used boring - it’s direct! We’re evolving and changing as we go. At this level we’ve had to adapt, we couldn’t be the same team as we were in the Championship. We need to look after the ball better. I don’t mind us going under the radar but we have to try and be better and have more control."

    • On how the squad are preparing for Manchester City: "We always try and play to our strengths. The bottom line is we don’t want it to be a comfortable day - we have to try and get them out of their comfort zone if we can. If we allow them to play the game and have control, which they do to loads of teams, it’ll be a difficult day. It’s going to be a difficult day anyway."

    • He added: "We will try and play to our strengths and not allow them to have the game they want."

    • Edwards provided an update on who will be available: "Issa Kabore is not eligible as it is his parent club. We're hoping that Tom Lockyer will be back available which is great news."

    • On facing teams at home: "I’d like to think we’re a good team. We've lost games this year but we’re competing well, especially at home. Kenilworth Road is showing it’s a unique place and it’s not easy to come here, every game has been really tight. I want to give credit to the players - they give absolutely everything and I've been so proud of them this season."

  8. 'We'll try our best to unsettle City'published at 11:59 8 December 2023

    Media caption,

Luton's Ross Barkley says he never doubted himself and is loving life with the Hatters in the Premier League.

The former Everton and Chelsea midfielder said his spell last year at Nice was difficult but that he has returned as a better player.

Luton host Treble winners Manchester City on Sunday.

"It's massive for the players and the club," he told BBC Look East. "We will be motivated."

Manager Rob Edwards, meanwhile, says he will be up against "the best manager in the world" in Pep Guardiola.

  9. 'We deserve to be in the league' - Barkley enjoying life at Lutonpublished at 11:58 8 December 2023

Ross Barkley celebrates after scoring for LutonImage source, Getty Images

Ross Barkley says it was a "surprise" to move back to the Premier League with Luton in the summer but that "the whole experience has been brilliant".

The 30-year-old - who rose to prominence at Everton and has had spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa - endured a disappointing season in Ligue 1 with Nice but is relishing playing regular football back in the Premier League.

"It was a surprise because we kept it under wraps, coming back to England, coming back to the Premier League," Barkley told BBC Look East. "I feel like I'm back at Everton. The stadium is very close, the fans are on top of you and it's a family club.

"Luton are a team that's hungry to stay in the Premier League. They've showed the fight and they deserve to be in the Premier League. It was an easy decision.

"'I've found my feet, I'm really comfortable with the team, the manager and the fans have been great and now I'm finding my rhythm."

Barkley has quickly become a key part of Rob Edwards' midfield and the Hatters boss believes the former England man allows his side to "play in a different way".

"He has a calmness on the ball," he said. "He'll take the ball under pressure, in transition and allow us to get up the pitch.

"He's enjoying his football because he feels loved and wanted. We are really pleased. He's made us a different team."

  10. 'It's not just another game' - Edwards previews Man City testpublished at 09:24 8 December 2023

Luton boss Rob Edwards says he is relishing the challenge of facing "the best manager in the world" when Pep Guardiola takes his Treble-winning Manchester City side to Kenilworth Road on Sunday.

The Hatters have performed admirably against top sides at home this season, securing an impressive point against Liverpool and only losing to a last-gasp Declan Rice goal in a thriller against Arsenal on Tuesday.

"It's not just another game - this is against the best in the world," Edwards told BBC Look East. "It is special. We will have a plan for this game but we want to enjoy it and compete.

"We will have a plan and will have to be as good as we have ever been, and they will need to be off [their game]. Our fans will need to help with the atmosphere. I’m really looking forward to it.

"These are the days, this is why we got promoted and what we wanted it for, to play the best and the best are coming to town."

Edwards was also full of praise for City manager Guardiola, who he believes is "the best there has been".

"He’s the best manager in the world," he said. "He’s on another level. A different plane. It’ll be a pleasure to be stood next to him. I have so much admiration and time for him.

"[But] I don’t want to be overawed or anything or feel like we don’t deserve to be here. We are here to compete and recognise we are up against the best and I hope we can sit here again next year.

"I’m sure I’ll look back in the future and be proud of what we’ve been through to get here."

  11. Luton v Manchester City: Pick of the statspublished at 09:23 8 December 2023

    • This is the first meeting between Luton Town and Manchester City since April 1999, a third-tier league meeting that City won 2-0 with goals from Paul Dickov and Tony Vaughan

    • Luton have won each of their past seven home league games against reigning top-flight champions, with these coming from 1985-86 to 1991-92.

    • Manchester City are winless in their past four Premier League, their worst run since March and April 2017. They have not gone five without a win since a run of seven in October and November 2009, while manager Pep Guardiola has never gone five in a row without a win in his top-flight managerial career.

    • Luton remain without a Premier League clean sheet so far this season but 33% of their goals conceded at Kenilworth Road this term came in their 4-3 defeat against Arsenal last time out.

    • Manchester City’s past five defeats in all competitions have all been when Rodri has not featured, including Wednesday's 1-0 loss at Aston Villa. By contrast, City are unbeaten in their past 43 games with the Spaniard in the team

    • Alfie Doughty has created more chances, provided more assists and played more passes into the box (110) than any other Luton player in the Premier League this season

  12. 'Can I go faster? I hope I will'published at 10:57 7 December 2023

Chiedozie Ogbene runs with the ball for Luton TownImage source, Reuters

Luton Town may be fourth from bottom in the Premier League table, but they boast a league leader in the shape of Chiedozie Ogbene.

In November, it was revealed that the Hatters winger had clocked the fastest speed by a player in the English top flight, external this term (36.93km/h), just ahead of Wolves' Pedro Neto and Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai.

Ogbene said: "I really like track and field and every now and then I like to put on the old Olympics, the 4x100m relays. I can't count how many times I've watched the London 2012 relay final.

"[Usain] Bolt is obviously someone I loved, the way he runs, his mechanics, but obviously I'm not 6ft 5ins so I don't try to hyperextend the way he can. I just love the way he is. He's like a piston.

"Sprinters advise to run at 90-95%, they don't try to run at 100%. If you get to 100%, you stress yourself.

"It's called the 90% rule. At 90% you're telling your brain 'I'm relaxed, I'm only looking for 90' and you end up running quicker because your brain is not chasing a goal."

Republic of Ireland international Ogbene has appeared in all 15 of Luton's Premier League matches this season, in his first year playing in the top flight.

"International football has helped me massively because it would have been a such a big jump," he added.

"When I came to the Premier League, I told myself 'I've competed well against some of the top full-backs in international football, I have to be confident'.

"Being quick is a good trait to have because defenders tend to respect you a bit more, they're scared you're going to go in behind.

"Can I go faster? I hope I will."

  13. 'Football played on pitch not on balance sheets'published at 08:53 7 December 2023

Ollie Kay, We Are Luton Town, external

How do I feel after going toe to toe with Arsenal? A team that started Tuesday's game top of the table, and boast riches, players and a global fanbase that most likely will never set foot in the Emirates Stadium? I have to say I feel pretty enthused by the performance by the players.

Unfortunately, conceding in the 97th minute, from a routine cross that we had been clearing all game has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

However, the Luton players have covered themselves in glory and once again shown up the vast majority of internet ‘experts’ and pundits alike who decried our recruitment or said we simply had not given a big enough transfer outlay.

My fellow We Are Luton Town writer Zac Neal has totalled the fees for the goalscorers in the 4-3 classic. Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Declan Rice cost a king's ransom of approximately £222 million.

The expense for Gabe Osho, Elijah Adebayo and Ross Barkley amount to an estimated £200,000, with Elijah making up the entirety of that, signed from League Two Walsall.

We will keep fighting the good fight, punching above our weight and we will show that football is ultimately a game played on the pitch, and not on balance sheets.

  14. Barkley 'gets better and better' amid Premier League 'cruelty'published at 16:49 6 December 2023

    Luton Town expert view banner

Geoff Doyle, BBC Three Counties Radio

That's the cruelty of the Premier League.

Luton looked to have gained a hard and well earned point against league leaders Arsenal but then came the dramatic injury-time goal to break the hearts of the team and supporters.

Most teams Luton have faced in the past 10 years would have bombed that stoppage-time free-kick straight into the box to try and get a winner. Arsenal, being the supreme team they are, were patient and worked the ball further forward and wider to get a better angled cross in - and the man they paid £115 million for did the rest to justify his price tag.

It was harsh but it is what the Hatters are up against most weeks.

Luton have to pick themselves up and go again. They have five days to extinguish the hurt and get ready for the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners. It is going to be a big challenge to be mentally and physically ready for Pep Guardiola's golden Manchester City team.

And yet there were plenty of positives in defeat to Arsenal. Luton gave the leaders so many problems and the Gunners were uncomfortable all night. You only had to see how relieved Mikel Arteta was at the end.

There were so many outstanding Luton performances but once again Ross Barkley stood out significantly.

The former England man still possesses out-and-out class on the ball and at times Arsenal struggled to suppress him. Barkley continues to raise his sharpness levels and is open to further improvement.

After his performance in the win over Crystal Palace, some Luton fans were describing him as the best Hatters player they had ever seen. They are likely to have been a younger generation of supporter but it is an indication of the impression he is making.

Barkley was even better against the Gunners and it is clear Luton have a special talent on their hands.

  15. Townsend 'proud but devastated' after defeatpublished at 11:25 6 December 2023

Andros Townsend of Luton TownImage source, Getty Images

Andros Townsend says he and his team-mates were "proud and devastated" after their seven-goal thriller against top-of-the-table Arsenal at Kenilworth Road.

The Hatters found the back of the net through Gabriel Osho, Elijah Adebayo and Ross Barkley, but Arsenal record signing Declan Rice's last-gasp header snatched a 4-3 victory for the visitors.

"The two words are proud and devastated," experienced winger Andros Townsend said after the defeat.

"We're proud because it was an amazing performance, against one of Europe's best clubs. We scored three goals, pressed higher to not give them any time on the ball so to have chances and still lose it - devastating."

Townsend believes Luton must "drown their sorrows and take the positives" before another "tough game" against Manchester City on Sunday.

  16. Walcott impressed by Luton display against Arsenalpublished at 09:21 6 December 2023

Elijah Adebayo celebrates with his team-matesImage source, Getty Images

Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott says Luton should “take a lot” from their performance against the Gunners despite a late defeat.

The Hatters conceded a late goal to Declan Rice after taking the lead earlier in the game, but remain two points clear of the relegation zone.

Walcott says they should be encouraged by their performance and backed them to cause other top sides issues, having run Tottenham close and held Liverpool at Kenilworth Road.

“Luton will be looking at themselves thinking: ‘We’ve scored three goals against Arsenal, and we still can’t win’,” Walcott told the Football Daily podcast.

“They did everything right until the last second. They’ll be disappointed but they’ve got to take a lot from this. It is a long season ahead and nobody expected them to win these games anyway.

“I think they are going to do relatively well against these big teams. They make it difficult and they frustrated Arsenal. Rob Edwards has brought a connection with the fans.”

  17. 'Positives to take' despite late defeat - Barkleypublished at 09:07 6 December 2023

Ross Barkley of Luton Town celebrates after scoring the team's third goal during the Premier League match between Luton Town and Arsenal FC at Kenilworth RoadImage source, Getty Images

Ross Barkley believes there are "positives to take" from Luton's narrow 4-3 defeat to top of the table Arsenal.

"It is a bit of a downer in the end because we performed well against the team that is top of the league," Barkley told BBC Radio Three Counties.

"So there are positives to take from it. We were down 2-1, then came back to 3-2, but then we conceded another two [goals]. It's easy to iron out but we keep making these mistakes. We are working on sorting it out, but it was a killer in the end.

"A goal happens quickly. It's not that we can't stay focused for the whole game. We conceded late against Liverpool, but against Crystal Palace and Everton the team did well in the late stages to get the win."

Barkley explained what the mood is like at the club is like: "We've got great team spirit and we show character on game day."

The 30-year-old midfielder has been "enjoying football" since joining Luton Town on a free transfer in the summer, after being released from Ligue 1 club Nice.

"I'm just enjoying my football. It was just great to score my first goal [against Arsenal]. I'm feeling positive, confident and just enjoying my football. That's the main thing."

  18. 'Extremely proud Hatters'published at 07:57 6 December 2023

    Your views

We asked for your comments on Tuesday's thriller between Luton Town and Arsenal.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Ant: What a sickener to concede a goal with the last kick. So proud and this Luton team improves with each game. For those who see us as a novelty act we have earned our place in the league and it takes real character to go from non-league to Premier League. It's our character that makes us the club we are.

Nina: Even though we lost I am still immensely proud of our team. To push a top team like Arsenal to the final minute is incredible considering where we were a few years ago!

Nathan: We’ve given Arsenal a real game. The Kenny was rocking under the lights. We still need to believe we belong in the Premier League. We are all proud of you boys. Rob Edwards, you’re always going to be a Luton legend.

Steve: Brilliant team performance and if we perform like that at home, we will beat the drop. Thought the whole team played well, hard to pick out individuals but Barkley and Osho were outstanding. Before the season started, people said we couldn’t compete in this league. We are proving them wrong and I am one extremely proud Hatter.

  19. Analysis: Luton 3-4 Arsenalpublished at 00:33 6 December 2023

    Steve Sutcliffe, BBC Sport

For Luton, this was another occasion when a good performance did not translate into points against one of the Premier League big boys.

The air of deflation around Kenilworth Road was clearly visible after Declan Rice's late winning goal for Arsenal.

However, Rob Edwards' side still showed enough quality and determination to provide a level of optimism towards their hopes of remaining in the top flight at the end of the season.

But if they are to survive they will have to eradicate the sort of defensive errors that contributed to Arsenal's opening goal.

Amari'i Bell's poor back pass gifted the Gunners possession deep in their half and Alfie Doughty's positioning from the throw-in that followed gave him little chance of preventing Bukayo Saka from teeing up Gabriel Martinelli.

Edwards, though, will undoubtedly look to draw upon the fighting spirit that twice saw them come from behind to level, with Manchester City, Newcastle and Chelsea heading to Kenilworth Road before the end of this year.

  20. Luton 3-4 Arsenal: What Edwards saidpublished at 22:51 5 December 2023

Luton manager Rob Edwards, speaking to Amazon Prime: "We thought we'd have a go, that's what our supporters want. That's our identity. Arsenal wanted a game of order and we made it chaotic at times. I'm really flat for everyone. I'm so proud of the lads.

On Man City next: "It gets tougher. These are the games we wanted. We've probably given a good few memories to some of our supporters here to see Arsenal come here. When I see them clapping at the end, I know we've done our job.

Change of system: "We needed the numbers out in the wide areas. Arsenal have a clear way of playing. We're trying to get pressure on the ball and adapt.

On set-pieces: "We work really hard on both sides of the game. We always have a plan. Arsenal don't give you a lot. We've got really good delivery and we've got people who want to attack it. We do a lot of work on it and more so in the last few months. The players are really enjoying it.

David Raya's performance: "We wanted to make it uncomfortable for them. We will probably have to be different away from home when we play them again, but we've got to use this place as a bit of a leveller and make it difficult."
