Archive: Norwich manager on importance of supporterspublished at 19:25 16 January

Thanks to Norwich City supporter Darren Doggett who sent us pictures of a wonderful piece of Canary archive.
It's the programme from a game against Bristol Rovers which took place on 5 May 1934 in Division 3 South at The Nest (the ground Norwich played at prior to moving to Carrow Road).
The Canaries had won the title that season and were set to take their place in Division 2 for the first time.
Here's how the two teams lined up that day (the game finished 0-0):
There's a fantastic description for the Norwich goalkeeper Norman Wharton:
"His great joy is to meet a forward who does not know him and tries to rush him through the goal. No forward has ever tried twice."
Finally, a word from then manager Tom Parker. He wrote about how important the supporters had been in that successful season.
He said, "I finish the season as I began. At the start I said the team spirit with the supporters is just as essential as with the team and events have proved this true."
Special thanks to Darren’s neighbour Peter for lending him the programme.
If you have any archive you'd like to share with us, please get in contact here and leave your email address.

Norwich City head to Bristol Rovers for an FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday (19.45 GMT).
Head coach David Wagner has been speaking to the media ahead of the game, here are the key points:
Jaden Warner is not available due to illness, but Adam Forshaw is fit for the game
Grant Hanley will be back in team training next week
Josh Sargent will be rested for the Bristol Rovers game, no new injury problems for him though
Warner could be sent out on loan but Wagner said it's early in the window so decisions will be made in the coming days
On Tony Springett's loan departure: "He didn't produce an end product in the opportunities he had." Wagner said the move to Northampton Town will benefit his career
On potential transfer incomings: "At the minute, it's quiet"
Wagner said he thinks it's a quiet transfer window so far in general, but it could "accelerate" at any time
On the Bristol Rovers game: "We expect a very testing environment. Tight stadium, sold out, difficult place but the reward is clear. I'd love to go to Anfield." Wagner is looking forward to a reunion with old friend Jurgen Klopp if Norwich can win the replay. Premier League Liverpool await in the fourth round
Wagner said he got a phone call from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp "5 seconds" after the fourth round draw was made

Your comments on Norwich City's win at Hull
As usual we have had plenty of messages from people wanting to have their say on Norwich City.
The Canaries won 2-1 at Hull in the Championship on Friday.
On Wednesday they head to Bristol Rovers for an FA Cup Third Round replay.
Here are some of your recent comments:
Adam - Didn't really deserve to win. Boring football. Manager should go.
Grapeo - A win is a win. Nothing changes, Wagner still needs to go. Don’t see the point in signing anyone until we get a new manager.
Dave - I'm not changing my mind on Wagner, he needs to go. Although I expect the club to wait for the end of the season. His body of work over 12 months has been poor, and once his high-risk attacking format at the start of the season collapsed with no plan B and a couple of key injuries, we can all see how limited his coaching is.
Andrew - Feel like results are continuing to paper cracks. Need to reinvigorate our season by implementing emerging talents such as Lima and Aboh before they leave at the end of the season (such as Alex Matos before). Just one of multiple problems that the club continuously misjudges.
Freddie - Massive three points, and a determined performance full of grit. Didn’t make it easy for ourselves whatsoever, but when do we ever? Always looked dangerous when we went forward as well which was made clear with the two goals. Really hope it’s a turning point and we go into the game with West Brom with similar intensity, but we’ve fallen off before.
Kieran - My thoughts on Wagner after the win at Hull hasn’t changed, because it was a typical Wagner win. No team cohesion and discipline that’s ultimately bailed out by a few moments of individual quality. The scoreline could’ve been completely different had Gunn been sent off after smashing into Connolly, so it’s a win that just papers over deep cracks.
John - Love the fight shown, need Sargent, Rowe and Sara healthy and on pitch together for the rest of the fixtures. With that, hope is alive. Wagner, in my opinion, vilified arbitrarily by lifelong malcontents.
Ian - I actually enjoyed the game. I loved the grit we had on Friday. Putting in a tough tackle, picking up a booking, a bit of fight with that added spark of quality. Yes, it wasn't pleasing on the eye, but it worked. If you can’t enjoy a 2-1 win away from home then I don’t really know what to say. Up the Norwich.
Max - A win shouldn’t paper over any cracks. We rely so heavily on individual quality and our only game plan is to sit back and protect whatever we have. We have so many gifted attacking options who are being stifled by Wagner, whose current style makes Chris Hughton look like Pep Guardiola.
Springett joins Cobblers on loanpublished at 15:00 15 January
15:00 15 January
Norwich City forward Tony Springett has joined League One Northampton Town on loan until the end of the season.
Springett is a Republic of Ireland under-21 international and has made thirteen appearances for the Canaries so far this campaign.
Cobblers manager Jon Brady had this to say about the capture of Springett:
"Tony is an exciting, attacking player who can play in the wide positions.
"He has been in and around the Norwich squad over the last couple of seasons and he also played for Derby a number of times last season."
Brady added, "He has a good pedigree and he adds depth to our squad in attacking positions.
"He has played in the Premier League, the Championship and League One so has a good pedigree and good ability and we believe he will fit in well in the excellent dressing room we have here."
Springett was on-loan at Derby County from January 2023 to March 2023 and made eleven appearances.
Please note: The following content is unsuitable for Premier League scouts, who should probably stop reading from this point forward.
Angus Gunn’s stops and Shane Duffy’s blocks were key factors in Norwich City’s vital win at Hull but the game’s decisive moment was delivered, once again, by Jonathan David Henry Rowe.
Rowe's 12th goal this season already makes him the first Canaries player this century to reach that tally in a single campaign before the age of 21, and he only needs four more to become the top scoring midfielder in a season over the same time period (Bradley Johnson, James Maddison and Emi Buendia all made it to 15).
One of the most impressive aspects of Rowe’s goals is that they come in all shapes and sizes. Want important goals? His 11 league strikes have accounted for seven points, without which Norwich would be well and truly out of the play-off picture (and that’s without considering the unquantifiable value of those two at Portman Road).
Looking for versatility? Rowe has scored five with his right foot, four with his left and three with his head – and is the first Canary since Cameron Jerome seven years ago to have at least three in each category.
Long range pings your thing? Bradley Johnson (v Blackburn in 2014/15) was the last player to score goals from outside the box against the same opposition home and away, before Rowe became the two-time scourge of Hull on Friday night.
David Wagner may not be idolised on the Carrow Road terraces right now, but Rowe’s bumper season owes much to his manager’s tactics pushing his wide men into goal scoring positions. Christian Fassnacht’s thigh accounted for the 20th goal scored by a Canaries wide player this season, and the club’s wingers are currently outscoring their strikers 20-17.
Wagner’s side have only failed to score in three of their last 22 games. Rowe didn't play more than 45 minutes in any of those three, and one wonders if Wagner looks back with regret at his decision to drop him for the recent 1-0 defeat at Millwall. Without the youngster’s ingenuity it could have been a similarly blunt tale on Friday.
Gabriel Sara has long felt like Norwich City’s key man, but Rowe might just be the club’s MVP at the moment. Now to just get to February…

Shane Duffy: 'We had to change defensively'published at 11:32 14 January
11:32 14 January
It doesn't take a tactical genius to see that Norwich City have improved defensively in the last couple of months.
After 16 Championship games the Canaries had conceded 32 goals, since then they have conceded 11 in 11 games.
Following Friday's 2-1 win at Hull City defender Shane Duffy told BBC Radio Norfolk that the team have been working on being tougher to beat.
He said: "We sat down, we had to because there was obviously something clearly wrong with the players we had in.
"We got together as a group - a defensive unit - and the manager and we tweaked a few little things. Obviously, at the start of the season we were playing very attacking with high full-backs and maybe when it wasn't coming off, we were on our own back there."
He continued, "There was one stage where we needed three or four goals to win a game which is impossible. So it's a few little tweaks."
You can listen to the full interview with Shane Duffy on BBC Sounds here.
On this day: Glenn Roeder sackedpublished at 09:18 14 January
Club chairman Roger Munby said: "We'd like to place on record our sincere gratitude and admiration for what Glenn and his staff achieved last season when they saved the club from relegation against the odds."
Norwich legend Bryan Gunn took over as manager in time for the next game against Barnsley which the Canaries won 4-0.
The season ended with Norwich being relegated to League One meaning they had slipped to third tier of English football for the first time since 1960.

Have your say on the Canaries' win at Hull
Norwich City had an excellent away win at Hull City on Friday night.
How are you feeling after that result as a City supporter?
Have you changed your mind about under-pressure head coach David Wagner?
We'd also love your thoughts on the club's lack of activity in the transfer market too. Are you glad that Norwich are taking their time getting potential targets signed?
David Wagner: 'Ashley Barnes fought like a warrior'published at 13:59 13 January
13:59 13 January
Norwich City head coach David Wagner has spoken about improving his side's defensive capabilities following an impressive 2-1 win at Hull City in the Championship.
Wagner told BBC Radio Norfolk:
"It was a top performance in terms of the work ethic, the togetherness, the fighting spirit."
He continued, "We created not a lot, but four or five top opportunities, on a difficult pitch and that we have got the double against Hull is just great.
"If we want to compete for the play-offs, we had to dramatically improve our goals conceded because there were far too many and we had to give them a clear picture and a clear idea of what they had to change and do better."
Wagner also had special praise for striker Ashley Barnes:
"Ashley Barnes up front fought like a warrior, for every inch, but this is exactly what you have to do on a pitch like this and in a game like this."
The Canaries are still in the hunt for the play-offs despite a very incosistent campaign so far. Their next league game is against West Bromwich Albion at home on Saturday 20 January.
Former City forward Stephen Elliott was the guest summariser on BBC Radio Norfolk, here's what he had to say at full-time:
"Job done in the end. It was probably a little bit more uncomfortable than it should have been at two nil. From a neutral point of view, it's good, but if you're a Norwich City fan or player you're thinking - 'why do we do this to ourselves?'.
"In general, if you're looking at it as an away performance by Norwich - it's a great win isn't it? To come away from home and pick up three points against a team that's just outside the play-offs," he continued.
"Tactically, Norwich weren't brilliant on the ball but you'd have to say it was a really good away performance. They dug in deep, every player who played tonight including the substitutes left everything on the pitch and probably just deserved it."
