St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "I thought we were comfortable throughout. Defensively, we limited them to very few chances except that one at the end.

"It's strange, football. We were absolutely brilliant last week - some of the football was superb - then this week we were just OK and we won 2-0. These are the games, if you want to be a top six side, you need to grind out the results.

"We have done very well up until now. There's a long way to go to secure the top six. There's a lot of games that can turn everything on the head. We managed to battle and scrap through today.

"It's very difficult to play the football we want to on the pitch, we are playing better stuff away from home - when you have to you play to the conditions and grind it out. I thought we done that brilliantly today, we showed bundles of character to get that over the line."

  3. St Mirren 2-0 St Johnstone: Analysispublished at 17:33 24 February

Jane Lewis, BBC Scotland at The SMiSA Stadium

An important win for St Mirren in Paisley after losing their last two games, although ironically they have probably played much better this season.

Stephen Robinson might not mind too much about that, however. It was vital to get back to winning ways with the top six in mind.

Neither side played their best stuff here, but at least St Mirren managed to grind out a result.

Stephen Robinson makes two changes to the St Mirren side that succumbed to a deflating defeat to Livingston last Saturday.

English defender James Bolton replaces Charles Dunne in the back three, with the Irishman dropping to the bench.

The second change comes in attack, with Lewis Jamieson filling in up top for Exeter City loanee James Scott.

  7. 'Best manager since Sir Alex'; 'A revelation' - your views on Robinsonpublished at 11:43 23 February

    Your Views

We asked for your thoughts on Stephen Robinson's first two years in charge of St Mirren.

Here's a taste of what you had to say:

Bob: Stephen Robinson is arguably the best manager we have had in 40 years since the heady days of [Alex Ferguson], [Jim] Clunie and [Rikki] McFarlane. We reached the top six last year and after one of the best starts in the league for as long as I can remember, we have a realistic shot at European football next year.

Craig: Stephen and the backroom team have completely raised every St Mirren fan's expectations in a short space of time. To be talking European football again for the second time in two seasons tells you that the board, players and fans have bought into his style. It is definitely a hard-working squad with a good mix of experience and youth.

Steve: I have followed St Mirren all my life and have ridden the rollercoaster ride for all that time. That's what you get for following the biggest wee club on the planet and I wouldn't have it any other way. Never take results for granted, but with Robinson at the helm there is a new excitement and expectation of winning more than losing.

Andy: Robinson has done a tremendous job over the last two years. He has managed to get the Saints into the top six and hopefully he can do it again this year. Given the budget that he has to work with and the standard of players that this allows him to get, he is managing to get the best out of them. I hope the Saints can keep him.

Gordon: Arguably our best manager since Sir Alex (yes, I’m old enough to remember when he was in charge).

James: Robinson has been a revelation. His passion and commitment to football cannot be questioned as recently shown. He has helped set up a structure that will stand the test of time.

John: The fact that fans are disappointed that the club is sitting fifth says everything you need to know about the impact Stephen Robinson has had on St Mirren. He has given the team an identity and a style of play that really suits the players who know what they have to do every game. I just hope we can hold on to him.

    • After their 1-0 win in December, St Johnstone could win successive league matches against St Mirren for the first time since March 2019 (run of 5).

    • St Mirren are unbeaten in eight home league games against St Johnstone (W4 D4), alternating between drawing and winning in this spell since a 0-1 defeat in December 2018.

  11. St Mirren and Livingston condemn 'snatching' of elderly supporter's bagpublished at 17:20 20 February

Livingston and St Mirren have both condemned an incident following Saturday's meeting between the clubs in which an elderly home supporter had their bag containing club merchandise "snatched".

The West Lothian side say they have since checked in on the male fan, who is said to be doing well despite being "shaken up" after the game.

St Mirren say they offered to pay the costs of replacing the goods for the supporter, but as Livingston already had arrangements to do so in place, the clubs decided the funds would be donated to a mental health charity instead.

  12. Chaos' score scribed with St Mirren in mind published at 12:13 20 February

    St Mirren fan's voice

Mark Jardine, Misery Hunters podcast, external

When the American novelist Henry Miller wrote that 'Chaos is the score upon which reality is written', it is reasonable to assume that he was describing the Scottish Premiership. He may even have had St Mirren in mind.

Consecutive league victories over Hibs and much-touted Dundee had instilled some confidence that the version of the Saints that racked up points early in the season, and a visit to basement club Livingston had the air of comfortable victory for some. Livingston had gone 12 league games without victory against the buddies, and the timing appeared to lend itself to that run continuing.

    Enter... chaos.

In-form Mikael Mandron continued in attack, alongside the same colleagues that had blown Hibs away in 45 minutes. No fewer than 21 shots peppered the Livi end on Saturday, including a penalty for which the softness of the award was matched by the softness of the finish.

Sitters were missed, shots were saved, corners were won. It would be harsh to criticise much of the performance, such was the share of possession and show of attacking intent from Stephen Robinson's side. However, goals and not shots are what win games and Livingston took their opportunity while the Saints stumbled.

One ill-judged fan embraced the growing storm of unpredictability and seemingly chose to personally question the gaffer's commitment amidst the post-game pressure cooker - as well as that of his assembled squad. That fan would appear to be lucky that Alex Gogic man-marked his manager, or chaos' score might have ascended into previously unknown heights.

No-one of a Saints persuasion wants their club to be headline news for reasons of conflict as opposed to football, but Robinson is by no means our first manager to opt for exercising a direct right to reply in the terraces.

A little over seven years have passed since Jack Ross waded into the home crowd post-defeat to defend his efforts, and anything resembling the togetherness with which that season concluded would be embraced once again in Paisley.

  15. Livingston 1-0 St Mirren: What the manager said published at 18:14 17 February

Assistant manager Diarmuid O’Carroll told BBC Scotland: "I think the boys did everything that we wanted, it was just one of those days in front of goal.

"Credit to Livingston, some great defending, they took their chance when they got it. For us, it is disappointing results wise but performance wise we can't ask for much more.

"We have got huge respect for Livingston, they have been on a tough run but they are a good side.

"Our lads have come here and stood up to it and done brilliantly. Livingston take the three points and they deserve it. They showed they are fighting for the manager.

"Nothing changes for us, we will go back to work on Monday and we will keep going. When we watch the game back I guarantee there will be more positives than negatives.

"We have no God given right to come to places like Livingston and expect to win but in fairness when we come here and perform like that, you have to pat the lads on the back because on another day we would have won."

  16. Livingston 1-0 St Mirren: Analysis published at 18:13 17 February

    Charlotte Cohen, BBC Sport Scotland

It's undoubtedly a tough one to take for St Mirren but the amount of chances they created will give Stephen Robinson reason to be optimistic.

The Saints attempted 21 shots in this game, their highest total in a single match in the Scottish Premiership this season and on another day a couple of them would have gone in the back of the net.

Although Saturday's result has put a slight dent in their top four hopes, there's only two points separating them and Kilmarnock in fourth and plenty of games left.
