British Grand Prix: Jenson Button happy with McLaren 'step forward'

Jenson Button was happy with McLaren's improved performance in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but disappointed not to be on the podium.

The Briton, who has not finished in the top three of his home grand prix in 15 attempts, came home fourth in a race won by compatriot Lewis Hamilton.

Button, who wore a pink helmet in tribute to his father John, who died in January, said: "It's a step forward.

"I'm just disappointed I was not up there with Lewis."

Button came within 0.8 seconds of catching Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who finished behind Valtteri Bottas of Williams in third.

"0.8 seconds is not a lot," he said. "One more lap would have been perfect to catch Daniel.

"I gave it my all. It's difficult when the engineer says 'give it all' but you have to save fuel as well

"We should be happy with what we have but we will not stop developing."

Button added Hamilton's win, which took him within four points of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the top of the drivers' standings, was "fantastic for the fans and the championship",

Australian Ricciardo was pleased to hold on to a podium slot after opting for a high-risk one-stop strategy.

"I feel good, this is like the best third place I've ever got," he said. "We did not have an awesome race car, we used it well and played the game well with one stop.

"I was only nervous for the last two laps when Jenson kept coming. With three laps to go my tyres started going."

Silverstone was Daniel Ricciardo's fourth podium finish of the season.
