Red Bull's Max Verstappen snatched pole position for the Italian Grand Prix from Lando Norris with the fastest lap in Formula 1 history.

The Dutchman's time of one minute 18.792 seconds beat the lap set by Lewis Hamilton at Monza in 2020 for Mercedes by 0.095secs - at an average speed of 164.484mph.

Norris had just leapt to the top of the times after a difficult first run left him seventh, but Verstappen pipped him by 0.077 seconds for his first pole since the British Grand Prix in July.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, leading Norris by 34 points in their championship battle, was third fastest, ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

But the seven-time champion has a five-place penalty and will start the grand prix at Monza 10th.

Polesitter Max Verstappen has two wins to his name this season in Japan and Imola but can the Dutchman claim a third victory at Monza? He's not in the championship fight this year, so the pressure is off the four-time world champion.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, meanwhile, have it all to play for. Australian Piastri leads his McLaren team-mate Norris by 34 points in the drivers' championship following the Briton's retirement last week in Zandvoort, so how will the team approach this race with Norris starting one place higher than Piastri?

Go and enjoy the rest of this lovely Saturday afternoon and then come back on Sunday and join us for race build-up from 13:00 BST.

Lights out is at 14:00 BST.

    See you tomorrow!

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton will start down in 10th after his five-place grid penalty from last weekend. He spoke to Sky Sports: "I'm really really happy with the progress we've made, particularly on my side of the garage, it's definitely been a lot more solid.

"We've been right there and within a tenth so we've just got to keep working on it.

"It's been an amazing weekend here as a Ferrari driver, I can't even find the words for it to be honest. The fans are really beautiful and the energy since Wednesday, they've turned up in the thousands.

"When I leave the garage and you get down to Turn One you see them on the left and the right and you see red.

"I don't know what's possible tomorrow but I will work my way through."

  4. 'I have no regrets' - Leclercpublished at 16:55 BST 6 September

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who will start in P4, speaking to Sky Sports: "I knew my lap was I hate to say perfect and I think no one ever does a perfect lap, but I think it was as close as what I would want to do during a qualifying lap.

"I knew that it would be very difficult to beat that on the second time lap which I didn't. When I saw that Max [Verstappen] went in front I knew that most of the time you do the best lap on the second lap in Q3 and you take all the risk there.

"I knew I had taken all the risk in the first run, I wanted to go for a bit more in the second run but it didn't work out. I have no regrets because that is the place we could have done in the best possible case."

After winning from P4 on the grid last year: "Last year was close to impossible, I think at the end we did a different strategy which helped us get the win.

"I think this year is a bit more difficult, it's going to be more tough to do something different. If we win tomorrow I will be surprised, but never say never."

  5. Postpublished at 16:53 BST 6 September

The atmosphere from the tifosi is still as passionate as ever despite no push for pole position from either Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton.

Let's hear from the two Ferrari drivers before we close the page...

Has Red Bull got the pace and power to keep two McLarens at bay for 53 laps tomorrow? If anyone can do it, it's four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

The Dutchman's pole today at Monza is the 45th of his career, which takes him above former Red Bull man and fellow four-time title winner Sebastian Vettel for most poles with the team.

  7. Where will Hamilton start at Monza?published at 16:43 BST 6 September

In a true blonde moment, Lewis Hamilton's five-place grid penalty completely slipped my mind as soon as qualifying started. I'm an idiot.

    So, a bit of housekeeping.

Hamilton drops from fifth to 10th for his first Italian Grand Prix with Ferrari, which lifts George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto, Fernando Alonso and Yuki Tsunoda up the order.

  8. 'Tomorrow we're in a good position' - Stellapublished at 16:40 BST 6 September

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very interesting session but both Lando [Norris] and Oscar [Piastri] have done a very good job at finding time in Q3.

"Especially Lando with the second set, finding almost half a second, so a positive session overall and a good position for tomorrow's race."

On the race and Max Verstappen's pole: "I think in fairness to Max [Verstappen] he has shown through qualifying and especially in Q3 that he had one-tenth more than us.

"He was faster in the first attempt in Q3 and was faster in the second attempt, he's been faster throughout the weekend, so fair play to Red Bull and Max.

"For tomorrow we're in a good position and we certainly won't forget about the Ferrari right behind us and George Russell as well, it will be a very interesting race.

"I think the race pace will be very very close, we're not expecting the degradation to be too high.

"I think it will not only be related to degradation and pace but also to first lap, first corner, safety cars, some variables that will be important for tomorrow."

  10. 'I would have liked to be a little bit further up' - Piastripublished at 16:30 BST 6 September

Oscar Piastri at MonzaImage source, Getty Images

Championship leader Oscar Piastri, who will start third on the grid: "Nothing major [went wrong], Turn One was a little bit average but the rest of the lap felt pretty tidy.

"I felt like I executed a pretty good session and built a little bit up to it at the start and found my feet.

"I think it’s just been incredibly tight this weekend, Red Bull and Max Verstappen looked quick, to be honest a lot of teams looked quick.

"It’s not been quite as comfortable for us so the result is not a big surprise but I still would have liked to be a little bit further up."

On the championship: "When you’re on the lap you're going for it and going for pole. You are not knowing what anyone else is going to be able to pull off. In the moment you're going flat out and obviously afterwards it creeps in a little bit but there's still a long way to go.

"I will try and make up some spots tomorrow because I would like a few more wins if I can."

On Lando Norris being quicker in race pace on Friday: "I don’t think it looked too bad from where I was but it’s just been a little bit trickier for us in general. I missed FP1 as well so that was kind of my first long run and the race is always very different, I'm pretty confident for tomorrow."

  11. "P2 is not a bad position" - Norrispublished at 16:26 BST 6 September

    Top threeImage source, Getty Images

McLaren's Lando Norris, who will start on the front row in second: "Max has been quick all weekend and it's never a surprise with Max. It was quite a session from me, up and down and too many mistakes here and there. But to put it together on the last lap, I was pretty happy with P2.

"I feel like I didn't do the best of jobs but to get P2 I'm still happy so let's say there were good and bad things. P2 is not a bad position to be off the line and I want to be ahead of everyone and that includes my championship contenders and Oscar. I'm still in a good position for tomorrow and I'm excited for the race."

On his chances in the race: "Our race on Sunday is normally our strength. To get past Max I'm sure will be a big challenge. Their race pace is very strong. If you see at the end of the lap, they're doing the same times as us. I don't expect any magical things, we have some Ferraris behind who are going to want to come through as quickly as possible. It's a long race, anything can happen, so we'll see what we can do."

  12. 'I'm very happy with that' - Verstappenpublished at 16:20 BST 6 September

Max Verstappen at MonzaImage source, Getty Images

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start on pole position at Monza: "I try but I think around here with the low downforce it’s always very difficult to nail the lap, under braking it's very easy to make mistakes.

"Q3 felt good and I'm happy with the laps and to be on pole here for us is also fantastic. The car has been working better the whole weekend and to be able to fight for pole, I'm very happy with that."

On if he thought it was possible: "It was tight, we were still lacking a tiny amount and we made some final changes which I think allowed me to push a bit more and that's exactly what you need in qualifying. For us, it's a great moment."

On the race: "Historically this season the race has always been a little bit more complicated for us, but we are going to give it everything we have.

"That's the only thing we can do and then we will see what happens tomorrow."
