Lando Norris became the first person to beat Max Verstappen to pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix with a stunning lap in his McLaren.

Verstappen has monopolised this race since it returned to the calendar in 2021 after a 36-year gap but Norris beat him by 0.356 seconds.

Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri was third, 0.499secs slower than the Briton, with Mercedes’ George Russell fourth.

Lewis Hamilton was knocked out in the second session and will start 12th after a mistake at the penultimate corner on his final lap.

Lando Norris celebrated his maiden Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix in May and with pole position in the bag by three and a half tenths at the difficult to overtake Zandvoort, is the McLaren driver favourite to secure his second victory tomorrow?

He has to execute the perfect start off the line first, however.

In the Red Bull corner, the orange army will be hoping Max Verstappen, aiming for a fourth consecutive win on home soil and starting alongside Norris, can upset the papaya party.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who will start third on the grid: "I just didn't do a good enough job. I think the first half of the lap was pretty solid then the second half wasn’t quite what I needed.

"The car has been very quick this weekend. A little bit disappointing to not be a bit higher up but we've still got a good race car underneath us to get some really good points, and hopefully some trophies tomorrow.

On McLaren's upgrades at Zandvoort: "Yeah, I think they're all doing what we expected them to do. Anything you can put on the car - especially when it is as tight as it is - is always a good thing."

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who qualified second: "I tried the best I could, very happy to be on the front row. It's very tricky with the wind - every lap feels different, so you cant go off the reference. I'm happy with second after yesterday. This was a good result.

"We'll give it a good go [tomorrow], but when you're more than three tenths behind in qualifying, we have to be realistic."

McLaren's Lando Norris, who takes pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix: "An amazing day; nice to be back and start with a pole.

I"t was a nice lap, honestly. Qualifying was always pretty smooth and I put in some good laps, especially the one at the end, which is always the most important. Great job by the team and I'm happy with today.

On the weather conditions: "It's harder than it looks, I think. It's not easy out there and every lap you have to know what to expect and know how much more you can push and where the limits are.

"I felt comfortable out there and the car was feeling amazing. We've got some upgrades on the car - the first time in a while - and everything is working well, so big thanks to the team."

That's the McLaren driver's fourth career pole and third this season, after his front-row spots in Spain and Hungary before the summer break.

Oscar Piastri couldn't improve on his best time and will start third on the grid alongside the Mercedes of George Russell.

Sergio Perez takes fifth place - a much brighter qualifying session for the Mexican, while Charles Leclerc finishes his dday in sixth spot.

But not for long, as Lando Norris smashed through and takes that front-row spot with a 1:09.673, pushing Max Verstappen down into second place.

Fernando Alonso has given all he can in the Aston Martin and the two-time world champion has slotted in to fifth on the timesheets with other drivers to complete their final runs.

Lando Norris out in front , meanwhile, is flying in the McLaren but the Red Bull of Max Verstappen goes on to provisional pole!

McLaren have locked out the front row and Max Verstappen and George Russell are lined up behind - but will tomorrow's grid stay like that? Charles Leclerc and the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll are fifth and sixth at the moment.

Lando Norris is dominating the Zandvoort circuit, with home driver Max Verstappen - winner of the previous three Dutch Grand Prix - only getting the better of the McLaren man from Turns 9 to 12.

Oscar Piastri gets us off the mark with a 1:10.074 on the soft compound to go top but here comes Lando Norris... and it's provisional pole by 0.119 seconds.

Max Verstappen can only manage third place with a 1:10.22.

The McLarens are once again in a strong position to seal a front-row spot this season.

It's been a challenging day for Williams but a bright spot has emerged this afternoon: Alex Albon has made it into the pole position fight.
