Gormley quits Tyrone as Canavan comes in as U21 coach

Tyrone defender Conor Gormley has retired from inter-county football while Red Hands legend Peter Canavan has joined the U21s backroom team.

Carrickmore clubman Gormley won three All-Ireland titles and the 34-year-old also picked up three All Stars in a county career which started in 2001.

Canavan resigned as Fermanagh manager last year before taking charge of club side Cavan Gaels.

He will work as a coach under Tyrone U21s manager Fergal Logan.

Canavan captained the Red Hands to their first All-Ireland triumph in 2003 and won six All Stars in an illustrious career.

The Errigal Ciaran clubman, who won a second All-Ireland title in 2005, replaced John O'Neill as Erne boss in 2011.

Gormley played alongside Canavan in the 2003 and 2005 All-Ireland finals and also featured in Tyrone's third Sam Maguire success in 2008.

He will best be remembered for his diving block to deny Armagh forward Steven McDonnell a goal chance in the 2003 decider.

Gormley, who struggled with injuries including a broken leg in 2006, also won four Ulster titles under Mickey Harte.
