Football League Division Two: Fermanagh 0-09 1-12 Cavan

Cavan ended Fermanagh's 11-game Brewster Park unbeaten run by earning a 1-12 to 0-9 victory in Saturday's Division Two Football League game.

The Breffnimen deservedly led 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time and Seanie Johnston's 47th-minute goal put them six clear.

Eight of Fermanagh's scores came from placed balls with Tomas Corrigan kicking six of their points.

David Givney and Gearoid McKiernan both starred as Fermanagh struggled to deal with Cavan's physicality.

After last weekend's 3-18 to 0-10 thumping of Armagh, this was another very encouraging display by a Cavan team employing a noticeably more attacking style this year.

Declan McCusker did have an immediate Fermanagh goal chance but his effort was diverted out for a 45 and Cavan took advantage of the let-off as Givney, wing-back Jason McLoughlin and Padraig Faulkner kicked points.

Peter McGrath opted not to start Sean Quigley after he was banned for last weekend's win over Laois and the Roslea man's dead ball accuracy appeared to be missed early on as Corrigan was off target with a couple of long-range efforts.

Three Corrigan points did help Fermanagh to level at 0-4 to 0-4 but Cavan were two ahead again by the interval after a couple of McKiernan scores.

Another Corrigan free left the minimum between the teams after the resumption but two lost kick-outs were then punished by Johnston's first point and a Liam Buchanan score.

Then came the crucial two-minute period of the contest as Cavan keeper Raymond Galligan bravely blocked a Martin O'Brien goal chance before the hitherto quiet Johnston found the net at the other end after a sweeping move.

A free from the keeper and another superb McKiernan score extended Cavan's lead to 1-10 to 0-6 and while substitute Quigley notched a couple of late Fermanagh points, a comeback never looked on.

The win moves Cavan to second spot in Division Two on six points and victories over Laois and Galway in their final two games will guarantee a return to Division One next year.

Fermanagh may need one more win from their last two games against Galway (away) and Tyrone (home) to be certain of retaining their Division Two place.
