Tom Daley launches diving academy to find new UK talent

Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley hopes his new diving academy will help unearth future stars.

The 19-year-old relocated from Plymouth to London earlier this year and his base at the city's Aquatics Centre will be the main training venue.

But 'Tom Daley Diving Academy' courses will also be run in boroughs across the capital and around the United Kingdom.

"There's every chance that in four years' time some of the kids could be diving and competing with me," he said.

The academy is part of a 'Learn to Dive' development programme run by Greenwich charity organisation, GLL, which aims to maximise the legacy of the London 2012 Olympics.

Although initially a grassroots scheme for youngsters, adults are also being encouraged to get involved.

World-class coaches will be used to help develop the more talented divers as they progress.

Daley's own Olympic medal-winning coach, Jane Figueiredo, will help with the development of young British diving teachers.

"Hopefully it can inspire the next generation of divers because we've got amazing facilities in London," Daley told BBC Sport. "We just need to utilise them with kids coming in."

GLL deputy managing director Peter Bundey said: "This is a unique partnership with Tom and is a tremendous boost to getting more young people participating in the sport of diving."

The revamped London Aquatics Centre was opened to the public in March and will host its first major event since the 2012 Olympics at the end of this month.

Daley will compete in the Diving World Series competition from 25-27 April before beginning his final preparations for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
