Dustin Johnson won The Barclays tournament in New Jersey, the first FedEx Cup play-off event of the season.
Johnson, now a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, carded a 65 for a two-shot win over fellow American Matt Kuchar and climbs to fourth in the world.
England's Justin Rose and Brian Davis finished five shots off the lead on 14 under, while world number one Luke Donald ended 11 under.
The Barclays was reduced to 54 holes because of Hurricane Irene.
If the third round had not been finished on Saturday, it would have reverted to a 36-hole event and Kuchar would have been declared the winner.
Kuchar had a one-shot lead going into the round but he could only card a 68.
The 27-year-old Johnson has now won five times on the PGA Tour and though he is yet to win a major, he played in the final group in the 2010 US Open and US PGA and at the Open in July.
Donald, 33, maintained his position at the top of the US money list as he bids to become the first winner of both the US and European money lists in the same season.
The second of four events in the FedEx series, the Deutsche Bank Championship, gets under way in Boston on Thursday with the 125-man Barclays field whittled down to 100.
The penultimate tournament in the series, the BMW Championship in Illinois from 15-18 September, will comprise the top 70 players in the standings.
The top 30 will go on to compete for a $10m (£6m) bonus in the finale, the Tour Championship in Atlanta, from 22-25 September.
