British Amateur: Lombard and Neil in Royal Portrush final

The schedule for the British Amateur Championship has been amended

South African Zander Lombard and Scotland's Bradley Neil will contest the 36-hole final of the British Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush.

Lombard beat England's Sean Towndrow by one hole in his semi-final while Neil saw off his fellow Scot, Connor Syme, 2&1 in their last four clash.

Earlier, Lombard defeated Paul Howard of England 3&2 at the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

Neil got the better of Iceland's Haraldur Magnus 7&6.

Daniel Brown, who had reached the match-play stages as the best qualifier, bowed out at the last eight stage as he lost to Towndrow at the 19th.

Syme proved too strong for Jamie Savage in the last of the quarter-finals, but it took him until the first extra hole to clinch victory.

Northern Ireland's interest in the event ended on Friday when both Chris Selfridge and Cormac Sharvin exited at the last-32 stage.

Moyola Park's Selfridge, the reigning North of Ireland Amateur champion, was beaten 3&2 by England's Toby Tree.

Sharvin beat Denmark's Victor Fasmer Henum 5&4 in his second-round game but was then beaten 4&3 by England's Paul Howard in the last 16.

Faithlegg's Robin Dawson also bowed out in the last 16 to end Irish hopes.

The event had been scheduled to finish on Saturday but the Royal and Ancient were forced to reschedule the programme because heavy fog heavily curtailed play on Tuesday.

Seven Northern Ireland competitors teed up on Monday, with Sharvin and Selfridge the only two to progress to the matchplay stage.

The 119th playing of the tournament attracted an international field, including players from as far afield as South America and New Zealand.
