Darren Clarke 14 behind in South African event after 76

European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke is 14 shots off the pace at the Dimension Data Pro-Am in South Africa after his second-round 76.

Clarke's three-over-par round left him three over for the tournament and 14 behind leader Darren Fichardt.

The Dungannon man's round included a triple-bogey six at the short eighth.

Gareth Maybin, meanwhile, will make the cut at the Indian Open after his one-under 70 left him sharing 25th spot, 10 behind leader SSP Chawrasia.

Maybin's round included four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey at the 14th.

Ballyclare man Maybin has reduced starts on the main European Tour this season after losing his tour card at the end of last season but he on course to earn a reasonable cheque in New Delhi.

Chawrasia is a shot ahead of Bangladesh's Siddikur Rahman while last year's Northern Ireland Open winner Joakim Lagergren is sharing third place four shots off the pace with Thailand's Chapchai Nirat.

Peter Lawrie is sharing ninth on three under after his 70 on Friday.

Lawrie is playing in his first event since claiming that his attempt to address a fizzy drinks addiction led to a slump in his form.

Kevin Phelan missed the cut after a second successive 73 left him on four over while Damien McGrane exited on six over after his second-round 74.

In the South African tournament, 2001 winner Clarke's hopes of moving up the leaderboard were sunk by his triple bogey six at the short eighth.

His only birdie came at the 11th with another dropped shot coming at the sixth.

South African Fichardt is three shots ahead of his compatriot Tjaart van der Walt with three more home players Jaco Ahlers, Danie van Tonder, Oliver Bekker and Hennie Otto a further stroke back.

The cut in the South African event will take place after Saturday's third round because of the pro-am format.
