Michael Hoey carded a second round 70 but misses the cut at the Northern Ireland Open

Michael Hoey has missed the cut at the Northern Ireland Open by one shot after carding a one-under par round of 70.

The event ambassador hit a double bogey on his twelfth hole and finished on two under for the tournament, 10 shots behind leader Emilio Cuartero Blanco.

It's the third year in a row Hoey has failed to make the cut in the event.

Cork golfer Niall Turner is one shot off the lead after a 66 and Chris Selfridge is the leading Northern Ireland player on eight-under par.

The two-time North of Ireland Amateur Champion, who just turned pro in May, followed his opening round 68 with a 66 in a round which included seven birdies.

Gareth Shaw fired a superb seven-under par round of 64 to move to five under.

After a disappointing round of 73 on Thursday, the Lurgan golfer eagled the second hole in two, and hit five birdies in a score card which included no bogeys.

Hoey missed the cut by the narrowest of margins after finishing in a tie for 61st place, with only the top 60 and ties making the 36-hole cut.

Although Hoey hit five birdies in his round with two bogeys, his round was derailed by taking a six on the third hole, his twelfth after starting his round on the tenth.

Peter Lawrie is on four under but a number of Irish players narrowly missed the cut, with Ruaidhri McGee on one under, and Michael McGeady and Damien McGrane finishing level.

Amateurs Tiarnan McLarnon and John Ross Galbraith finished one-over par for the tournament.

Former British Amateur champion Alan Dunbar carded a one under par round of 70 but finished the tournament on two over.

Royal County Down's Reeve Whitson finished on four over after a disappointing 77 with Richard Kilpatrick on six over and Gary Wardlow on seven over.
