Veteran Scottish player Catriona Matthew is among four wildcards chosen by Europe for the Solheim Cup against the USA, which starts on 18 September.

Matthew, 46, will make her eighth appearance in the biennial team event as Europe chase a third straight win.

"I'm very proud," she said. "As you get older, they get more special."

Caroline Hedwall (Sweden), Caroline Masson (Germany) and Karine Icher (France) are Europe captain Carin Koch's other picks.

"Catriona has the experience, can play with anyone and is always calm," said Europe captain Carin Koch.

English pair Charley Hull and Melissa Reid had already qualified, external for the event, which takes place at the German course of St Leon-Rot.

Deja vu

Nine of Europe's team played in the 2013 Solheim Cup, along with 11 of USA's 12 players.

Koch's selections mean that the European team will contain no rookies for the first time, with nine players from the victorious 2013 side retaining their places.

"I think that will definitely help us," Koch told BBC Sport. "They remember that great feeling of winning."

Former US Women's Open champion Paula Creamer and Brittany Lang have been selected as the USA's two wildcards.

Creamer, 29, will make her sixth appearance, while Lang, 30, will represent America for a fourth time.

"They add a lot to the team, not just as far as golf, but chemistry and experience," said US captain Juli Inkster.

The Solheim Cup, like the Ryder Cup played in a format of foursomes, fourballs and singles, was won by Europe on American soil for the first time in 2013., external
