Sweden's Rikard Karlberg claimed his first European Tour title after he beat Martin Kaymer in a play-off at the Italian Open in Monza.

The pair parred the first play-off hole but Karlberg holed a 20-foot birdie on the second to take the victory.

"I didn't want to win on his mistake, I wanted a birdie," he said. "To do it against Kaymer is incredible,"

Two-time major champion Kaymer let slip a three-shot lead on the back nine and missed a putt to win on the last.

The German appeared to be in command when he birdied four of the first nine holes to move to 21 under but he dropped shots at the 10th, 13th and 14th to fall into a nine-way tie for the lead.

Karlberg birdied three of his last five holes for a final-round five-under 67 to set the clubhouse lead with former world number one Kaymer and Sweden's Jen Fahrbring joining him on 19 under with birdies on the 16th and 17th respectively.

Fahrbring bogeyed the 18th to drop into a seven-way tie for third - which included English pair Matthew Fitzpatrick and Danny Willett - before Kaymer left his birdie putt on the last inches short to ensure a play-off.
