Wentworth PGA: Danny Willett shares lead after round of 68

Danny Willett had a scrappy end to his round but birdied the par-five 18th

Masters champion Danny Willett carded 29 for the opening nine holes of his second round to share the lead at the PGA Championship.

The Englishman's front-nine at Wentworth was a tournament record, and included six birdies in seven holes.

However, a hat-trick of bogeys from the 15th saw him come home in 39 and finish on a four-under-par 68.

His 10-under-par total of 134 was later matched by first-round joint leaders Scott Hend and YE Yang.

Australian Hend finished his three-under-par 69 with an eagle at the par-five 18th, while South Korean Yang mixed four birdies, an eagle and three bogeys in his round.

South Africa's Jaco van Zyl was a shot behind in fourth.

"It's just golf, isn't it?" Willett, 28, told BBC Sport. "Two tales. I played good, [but there were] a couple of silly shots on the back nine.

"But you've got to look at the full number, and 68 is good out there."

On the 10th tee, Willett was 12 under and threatening Paul McGinley's tournament-record halfway score of 13 under but a bogey stalled his progress.

He also had a lucky escape while examining his ball near a tree on the 17th when his sunglasses almost fell on the ball. Had they done so, he would have incurred a one-stroke penalty but referee John Paramour confirmed they had not.

Willett finished his round on a high though with a birdie at the last.

"I could have chucked it away and finished really poorly but it shows a little bit of mental strength," he added.
