The 107th edition of the US PGA Championship gets under way on Thursday, 15 May at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy is aiming to become only the sixth golfer in the past 70 years to win the first two majors of the year.

World number one Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Xander Schauffele are also in a stacked field featuring 95 of the top 100 golfers in the world.

BBC Sport will have live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra across all four days.

There will also be live text commentary, reaction and analysis on the BBC Sport website and app.

Who heads the list of favourites?

Buoyed by finally becoming the sixth man to complete the career Grand Slam, McIlroy arrives at Quail Hollow looking for another slice of history.

Only Ben Hogan (1953), Arnold Palmer (1960), Jack Nicklaus (1972), Tiger Woods (2002) and Jordan Spieth (2015) have won the first two majors of the calendar year and the Northern Irishman could hardly ask for a better venue for that pursuit.

McIlroy won his maiden PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow in 2010 and has since racked up three more wins at the North Carolina course including when he set a course record 10-under 61 in the third round in 2015 on the way to victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Should McIlroy succeed he would also become the first non-American winner of the US PGA Championship since Australia's Jason Day lifted the Wanamaker Trophy in 2015 at Whistling Straits.

A year on from being arrested and warming up for his second round by stretching in a jail cell, Scheffler heads the list of bookmakers' favourites along with McIlroy.

The 28-year-old American has found some recent form after his start to this season was delayed by a hand injury suffered while preparing Christmas dinner.

Last year's Masters champion was three shots adrift of McIlroy at Augusta National in April but followed that with an emphatic victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. His 31 under par total equalled the record for the lowest 72-hole score in PGA Tour history as he romped to an eight-shot win.

However, there are potential winners everywhere in the 156-man field including an in-form Justin Thomas.

The 32-year-old arrives in Charlotte after ending a three-year drought for a tournament victory at the RBC Heritage in April and following that up with a second-place at the Truist Championship.

The American also won the first of his two US PGA titles at Quail Hollow in 2017 and won four of his five matches in the 2022 Presidents Cup at the same venue.

Schauffele is bidding to win his third major title as he looks to become the event's first repeat winner since Brooks Koepka in 2019.

His US Ryder Cup team-mate Jordan Spieth will make a ninth attempt to claim the fourth and final leg of the Grand Slam, since claiming his third major at the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale.

Before last week's Truist Championship he had recorded four straight top-20 finishes and closed with a bogey-free 62 in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, his lowest round for four years.

Ludvig Aberg's power with his driver could prove advantageous in only his sixth appearance at a major, while England's Justin Rose will hope to go one better after losing to McIlroy in a play-off at the Masters.

Two-time major winner Collin Morikawa cannot be underestimated as he looks to build on a solid opening to the season which has seen him post two second-place finishes on the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry climbed into the world's top 10 despite falling short on the closing holes at the Truist Championship.

Each of the past nine US PGA Championships have been won by Americans, with Jimmy Walker, Thomas, Koepka in successive years, Morikawa, Phil Mickelson, Thomas, Koepka and Schauffele claiming the titles.

It is the longest such streak at this championship since a 10-year run from 1980 to 1989.

What about the LIV contingent?

Bryson DeChambeau's two major triumphs have come at the US Open

There will of course also be a healthy challenge from the 16 players competing on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.

Bryson DeChambeau finished a stroke behind Schauffele at Valhalla last year and subsequently edged out McIlroy to win his second US Open title at Pinehurst, albeit he faded when in the final pairing with the world number two at Augusta.

Jon Rahm has four top-10 finishes in his previous eight starts in majors, while three-time champion Koepka cannot be discounted.

Australian Cameron Smith was the last golfer before Schauffele to post 20 under par at a major, when he won the 2022 Open, while Dustin Johnson has received an exemption to participate.

Patrick Reed, who won the Masters in 2018, underlined his case as a prospective contender with a third-place finish at Augusta in April.

Englishman Tyrrell Hatton is yet to land an elusive first major, while Spain's Sergio Garcia has picke up a win this year, capturing his first LIV title at the 2025 LIV Golf Hong Kong event.

It should also be intriguing to see how Tom McKibbin goes, with the 22-year-old from Belfast having elected to join LIV Golf despite earning his PGA Tour card through success on the DP World Tour.

Is Tiger Woods playing?

Four-time US PGA champion Tiger Woods will not be playing at Quail Hollow this year because he is still recovering after rupturing an Achilles tendon in March.

The 49-year-old has not made a competitive appearance since missing the cut last July at The Open at Royal Troon and will also not be fit enough to compete at the two remaining majors in 2025 at Oakmont and Royal Portrush.

His four victories in the US PGA Championship all came between 1999 and 2007.

However, aside from a runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2018 his appearances in this event have been limited in recent times and he has only completed a full four rounds at the tournament on four occasions since 2011.

What is the weather forecast for North Carolina?

No fans were allowed on the course on Monday because of inclement conditions and the BBC weather forecast for North Carolina predicts more thundery showers on Tuesday and also on Wednesday, which is the final practice day before the first round.

Conditions do improve on Thursday and Friday with sunshine expected along with maximum temperatures of 31C.

The later starters in Saturday's third round are expected to face more thunder and rain although conditions for the final round on Sunday look to be perfect at present with sun, a gentle breeze and a maximum temperature of 29C anticipated.

What are they playing for?

In 2024, the total purse for the PGA Championship was $18.5m and Schauffele took home a top prize of $3.33m (£2.5m).

However, there is more than just a hefty cheque on offer.

The victorious golfer also gains five-year exemptions into the other three major tournaments and get to keep the Wanamaker Trophy for a year, before receiving a replica.

Similar to the other three major tournaments, the winner of the PGA Championship typically receives 100 Official World Golf Rankings points.

They also collect 750 FedExCup points, which all but guarantees a top-50 finish in the standings of a competition that has a $100m prize pool.
