World Gymnastics: Daniel Keatings & Becky Downie miss out

Britain's Daniel Keatings and Becky Downie missed out on individual medals at the World Gymnastics Championships.

Keatings, 24, who won Commonwealth pommel horse gold in Glasgow, struggled with his routine, finishing eighth.

European uneven bars gold medallist Downie, 22, recorded a career-best result of fifth in China.

World debutants Claudia Fragapane (vault) and Courtney Tulloch (rings) impressed, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

It means Great Britain have only won one medal - men's all-around silver for Max Whitlock - at the event in Nanning, with one day of competition remaining.

Keatings last claimed a World honour in 2009 - with Britain's first-ever all-around medal after finishing second.

He had been tipped to challenge eventual victor and Olympic champion Krisztian Berki of Hungary, but the Briton slipped early in his routine.

"I knew if things went well today, I could get a really big score, but I was struggling from near the start and only just managed to stay on," he told BBC Sport.

"There have been a lot of positives this year and whilst this wasn't how I wanted to finish, hopefully I can put it behind me."

Downie said she was hoping to challenge for her first World honour, but is happy with her progress this year after battling back to form following a series of injury problems which saw her miss the London 2012 Olympics.

"Of course it's a bit disappointing not to be in the medals, but overall to have three great routines is pleasing," she said after finishing ahead of team-mate Ruby Harrold, who was eighth.

"This year has been brilliant for me and this result again is massively encouraging going forward."

Fragapane, who won a record-equalling total of four gold medals at Glasgow 2014 for England, was delighted with her performance in the vault event and hopes it will boost her prospects in Sunday's floor final.

"I'm really happy, it's an amazing experience competing with the world's best gymnasts and to learn from them," she said.

USA gymnast Simone Biles - who has won team and all-around titles in China - was denied a third gold medal, finishing second to Hong Un Jong of North Korea in the vault final.

Britain's Tulloch only turned 19 on Monday and is competing in his first major event for the British team.

"In my first World Championship to make the final is incredible. This whole experience has been brilliant and I've learnt so much," he told BBC Sport.

In addition to Fragapane, Britain's Nile Wilson is also set to compete on the final day of the World Championships.

The gymnast, who withdrew from the all-around competition due to an injured wrist, has recovered sufficiently to compete in the high bar final - an event he won Commonwealth gold in this summer.
