Wales finished third in their pool at the FIH Nations League in Malaysia after a 2-2 draw with France.
France opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Louis Haertelmeyer before Fred Newbold equalised for Wales in the second quarter.
Jack Pritchard then put Wales, who are ranked 19th in the world, ahead in the final minute of the third quarter but Amaury Bellenger responded in the final quarter for France, who are ranked 10th.
Wales finish the pool stage without a win having drawn 4-4 with South Africa and lost 3-2 to Korea.
Korea's 1-0 win over South Africa in the other group game on Tuesday means Wales finish third. They will now play the side who finish fourth in pool B on Friday morning.
"Today was a much better performance, we showed glimpses of what we're capable of," said Wales co-captain Rupert Shipperley.
"We've played France a lot so we knew it was going to be a tough game. It does give us a bit of confidence moving into the playoff games."
