Shareta pips The Fugue to win the Yorkshire Oaks at Ebor Festival

France's Shareta beat The Fugue by a neck to win Thursday's Yorkshire Oaks on day two of the Ebor festival.

Christophe Lemaire rode a superb tactical race to win the Group One outing for fillies and mares.

Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre said the three-year-old was helped by the long straight at York.

"In France the straight is often too short, and she does not have time to show what she can do. But today she was able to continue on," he said.

Oaks winner Was (11-2), ridden by Seamie Heffernan, set the early pace and led coming into the straight but was unable to keep up in the final stretch and finished third.

The Fugue (7-4) on the outside seemed to have timed her run perfectly under William Buick, but Shareta (2-1) came through to win her first Group One race after her second place in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe last year.

De Royer-Dupre said the Aga Khan-owned Shareta is unlikely to run in this year's Arc, however.

"We have the Prix Vermeille (in September), a Group One only for fillies. But we have to be careful as the ground at Longchamps at the end of the season will be very, very soft," he said.

Rosdhu Queen (9-2) won the Lowther Stakes, with Baileys Jubilee (12-1) second and Royal Rascal (33-1) third. Pre-race favourite Newfangled pulled up after a furlong with a suspected displaced pelvis.
