Frankel foal sells for £1.15m at Goffs sale in London

A foal of legendary racehorse Frankel sold at auction for the first time on Monday - for £1.15m.

The three-month-old unnamed colt was sold in London together with his mother, Crystal Gaze, who is expecting her second Frankel foal next year.

Bidding at the Goffs bloodstock sale started at £1m, with MV Magnier of Coolmore Stud the successful buyer.

Frankel, rated the best horse ever on the Flat, was retired to stud in 2012 after winning all 14 of his races.

Magnier, the son of Coolmore supremo John Magnier, said: "He has been bought for a racing partnership, and there are four different people in it.

"It's a nice, strong colt and the lads really liked it."

He said it was too early to say where the young horse would be trained.

Seller David Redvers, owner and manager of Tweenhills Stud, said: "It seems like an awful lot of money to pay for a horse and it's a bit sad to see the whole package go, as the mare is a sweetheart."

The sale was held in association with Sheikh Fahad's Qipco Holding.

Redvers, who manages Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing operation, added: "It was fantastic to bring them to London and Sheikh Fahad was very keen to support the sale."

Frankel's stud fee was set at £125,000 a time by owner Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms.

The Sir Henry Cecil-trained colt, who mates with about 120 mares during the breeding season, now resides at his place of birth, the Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket.

Crystal Gaze is also the mother of Caspian Prince, the winner of the Investec Dash on Derby Day at Epsom last weekend, and Group One sprinter Spirit Quartz.
