Christophe Soumillon is set to ride Vadeni in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe despite a 60-day ban for elbowing a rival out of the saddle.

The Belgian jockey was penalised after Friday's incident with Rossa Ryan during a race at Saint-Cloud.

But the suspension does not begin until 14 October.

French racing's rulers have admitted their discomfort at Soumillon being allowed to ride on Sunday in Europe's richest race at ParisLongchamp.

"I am very uncomfortable about what happened," said France Galop chief executive Oliver Delloye.

"Regarding the rules and any changes, we need to investigate very thoroughly and it has to take a little time.

"The current rules are as good as we can make them, but this sort of thing shouldn't happen in racing."

Ryan was unseated from his mount, but was back riding at Newmarket on Saturday.

"Look, it was something that happened that probably shouldn't in racing, but the main thing is I'm 100% and the horse I rode is fine," he said.

Last year's shock Arc winner Torquator Tasso aims to repeat the feat.

The German challenger, who triumphed at 80-1 in 2021, is better fancied this time and will be ridden by Frankie Dettori for trainer Marcel Weiss.

Dettori replaces Rene Piechulek, who will be aboard Mendocino.

Luxembourg, trained by Aidan O'Brien, is among the favourites while Alpinista represents Sir Mark Prescott.

Japan again seek a coveted first victory in the contest, with a record four contenders - Titleholder, Deep Bond, Do Deuce and Stay Foolish.

Prix du Jockey Club and Coral-Eclipse winner Vadeni, trained by Jean-Claude Rouget for owner the Aga Khan, heads the French contingent.

Other contenders include Ralph Beckett's Irish Derby winner Westover.

Dettori, who has won the race six times, will be having his 33rd ride in the mile-and-a-half race.

"It went really, really well," said Torquator Tasso's trainer Weiss after Dettori partnered the horse in a workout on Tuesday.

"There was a symbiosis between the jockey and the horse - they were in harmony."
