Cardiff Devils have parted company with Pete Russell, despite the head coach having previously signed a new deal for the 2025-26 season.

Russell's departure comes two days after the Devils were beaten 4-3 in overtime by Nottingham Panthers in the Elite League Play-Offs Grand Final.

The Scotsman joined the Welsh club in 2023, leading them to second in the league during his first season in charge.

In January he helped Cardiff win their first European title when they lifted the Continental Cup.

The Devils, who finished fourth in the league, also reached this season's Challenge Cup final where they lost to Belfast Giants.

"Pete is a great person and a great coach," said Cardiff managing director Todd Kelman.

"We won a European Championship under his leadership and made two finals this season.

"I want to thank Pete for everything he did for the team over the past two seasons and wish him well going forward."
