Coventry Blaze dented Cardiff Devils' Elite League title hopes despite the visitors fighting back from an early deficit.
After Joey Martin put the visitors ahead, David Clements, Chase Gresock and Grayson Constable struck for the hosts.
Josh MacDonald pulled one back for Devils, but in the final period Nick Seitz and Michael Regush ensured Blaze's win.
Devils have the chance to avenge the setback when they host Blaze on Saturday, 28 December (19:00 GMT).
