World Judo Championships: GB's Natalie Powell wins bronze in Budapest

Natalie Powell has won Great Britain's second bronze medal at the World Judo Championships.

The Welsh 78kg fighter, who finished seventh at the Rio Olympics, beat Marhinde Verkerk of the Netherlands by ippon in Budapest.

The medal is Powell's first at world level, while her defeated opponent is a former world champion.

"After my disappointment at the Olympic Games this is what I've been working for," said the 26-year-old.

"It's been a really hard eight months and I'm so happy I've been able to achieve it."

Powell's medal was also the first for a Welsh competitor at a World Championships.

Earlier on Friday Olympic bronze medallist Sally Conway was eliminated in the third round in the 70kg category.

Her GB team-mate Gemma Howell was also beaten at the same stage of the 70kg event in Budapest.

Nekoda Smythe-Davis won Britain's first medal at the championships since 2010 when she took bronze on Wednesday.
