    BBC Radio Wales

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales former England bowler Simon Jones, a Hampshire team-mate of Phillip Hughes, said: "It's obviously shocking news to wake up to.

"My wife came in and shook me this morning and said in a very upset manner that Phillip had passed away and I was in shock because when I heard the news I thought with the way things are he's just going to be in hospital for three or four days and recover and then be back to normal.

"To hear that he's passed away is deeply saddening and my thoughts go out to his family and friends but also to the bowler Sean Abbott.

"You know it's something that we do as a job as a quick bowler - you run in and try and be aggressive and impose yourself. You never go out to intentionally hurt someone, but for someone to actually die, it's sickening."

"Hughes was an immensely popular young cricketer. He played for three counties in England and this news will affect everyone involved with the game.

"Every now and then in cricket there is a more serious injury, but not this. So while accepting that there is an element of risk playing almost every sport, to lose a such a talented young player to just another ball bowled in just another game of cricket is a tragedy.

"Modern headgear has been drastically reduced since the early prototypes, enabling batsmen to play more comfortably and without compromising their agility.

"The conclusion will be the same: that this was a brutal, freakish accident, that ended a batsman's life, and will affect the young bowler, Sean Abbott, forever."
