    League One side Colchester United have signed former loanee Richard Brindley on a two-year contract. The 22-year-old defender, who played eight times for the U's last season, was released by Rotherham at the end of the campaign.

    The Irish Rugby Union has confirmed captain Paul O'Connell will retire from international rugby after the upcoming World Cup.

    O'Connell will also be released early from his Munster contract and is expected to finish his career with European champions Toulon.

    Strong winds overnight disturbed a portion of the covers, allowing rain to get on one end of the wicket.

    Further rain fell early in the day and, at 15:15 BST, the umpires decided the pitch was unfit for play today.

    Amir Khan is convinced he could be less than two weeks away from landing his long-awaited super-fight with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather.

    But Khan has dismissed any prospect of an imminent all-British showdown with domestic welterweight rival Kell Brook, saying he has "no interest" in the fight at the present time.

    Khan told Press Association Sport: "I don't think I have ever been closer to getting the fight with Floyd Mayweather than I am at this moment.

    "The indications are that I have strengthened my case with my win over Algieri and I believe there is every chance the fight could be confirmed within the next two weeks."

    The 19-year-old came on in the 41st minute but was subbed in the second half during Chelsea's 1-0 win against Sydney FC, with the Blues' boss unhappy with Loftus-Cheek's work rate.

    "With Ruben, it's one step back in terms of my relationship with him," said Mourinho. "If he doesn't know what it is to play for me and Chelsea it's one step back. At 19 you have to run three times more than the others, you have to play to your limits and not like a superstar with the ball at your feet.

    "I don't accept when he's in midfield with Mikel and Matic that when we don't have the ball he doesn't press, doesn't have intensity and he's waiting for everybody else to recover the ball. I don't accept that in the superstars so how can I accept that in a kid?"

    New York Cosmos will become the first professional American sports team to play in Cuba since 1999 on Tuesday when they face the Cuban national team in Havana.

    The game marks the first time a US sports team has visited Cuba since President Obama announced steps toward full diplomacy with the country.

    Triathlete Helen Jenkins has withdrawn from the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, because of an ankle injury.

    The Welsh athlete, 31, a two-time ITU World Triathlon Series winner, missed much of 2013 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a foot injury.

    Jenkins made her return last month in the World Series race in Cape Town, where she finished seventh.

    "I'm disappointed to be missing Baku and to miss out on being part of Team GB," Jenkins said.

    Former England batsman Robert Key will remain as Kent's club captain despite dropping himself from the Championship side.

    Key, 36, omitted himself for matches against Glamorgan and Gloucestershire but returned against Surrey, with Sam Northeast leading the side instead.

    "Rob had a bit of a slump in form and dropped himself, which is unusual," said chief executive Jamie Clifford.

    "He came back but decided he wasn't going to captain, on the basis he would probably score more runs."

    Angry sportsmen, stay off Twitter. Former England forward Gareth Hock has been fined £1,000 by the Rugby Football League for posting "inappropriate material" on social media.

    Hock, 31, joined Championship side Leigh Centurions on 26 February but while playing for Salford Red Devils earlier that month, he was banned for six games for reckless use of his knees in a Super League defeat by St Helens.

    An RFL statement, external said Hock breached the RFL's social media policy in February.

  20. German FA opposes World Cup boycottpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

    The German Football Association would not support a boycott of the 2018 World Cup in opposition to the way Fifa is running the game.

    Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has said England would support any boycott led by Uefa following Fifa head Sepp Blatter's re-election.

    German FA president Wolfgang Niersbach, speaking ahead of a meeting of Uefa officials this week, said: "We don't want to go down the route of a boycott. That won't accomplish anything."
