It can be pretty sketchy, and when you are riding for your team leader you don't want to take any unnecessary risks. If an attack comes, the main thing is not panicking and sticking together.

"Usually, so long as whoever attacks is on his own, there's no major drama. But if there's a team-mate with him, or if he could catch up with the breakaway, then that can pose a real threat."

Milner gets asked about wearing the famous Liverpool number seven shirt.

The winger replies by saying it is a huge number, which isn't technically true. I mean it's not as a huge as a hundred is it, or, say, a billion. It's not even as huge as 22.

    s

But we get his drift. "I am very proud to wear that number," he says, before adding: "I have settled in at the club well and pre season is great for that because you go away on tour and spend every minute of the day with the boys, so you get to know them.

"I've been very lucky throughout my career to play for the best clubs. This club expects to win every time it steps on the field and that's the kind of pressure you want to play under."

The media have obviously only just noticed them too because they've finally been asked a question.

    g

The Malaysian press seem very interested in the fact Henderson is taking over from Steven Gerrard as captain.

"Last season was good preparation for me when it comes to that because I was vice captain and when Stevie wasn't there I tried to step in best I could," said Jordan, who has, it must be noted, wonderfully gelled hair for the occasion.

"The biggest thing as I see it is always putting the team first and make sure everything surrounding the team is perfect to give us the best possible chance of winning things."

  126. Brendan Rodgers news conference

"I'm very happy with the players we've brought in. We had to bring players with ambition, we've done that.

"I'm very hopeful we can be competitive this season and challenge on all fronts."

    So, too, are Liverpool fans.

    g

In Malaysia ahead of the latest game of Liverpool's pre-season tour, he's asked what he wants out of Friday's game. Football fitness, he says.

"The players have come back in real good condition but the aim has been to improve our football fitness during the games," the boss adds. "We've nearly half a new team coming in so it's about the players adapting and adjusting, and improving the dynamic and cohesion in the team."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has conceded it may take a huge fee to prise Everton defender John Stones away from Goodison Park.

The Premier League champions have had a bid of around £20m rejected by the Toffees.

    g

Chelsea are expected to up their offer for the 21-year-old and Mourinho said: "This is the market now. You only pay it if you want to. If you don't want to pay it, don't pay. It's as simple as that.

"The market has no rules or limits from season to season. If the big clubs don't want to go over certain limits, they have to make a decision."

  151. Mystery man Llorente

    Football gossip

The "mystery" signing Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he will be making this summer looks to be Juventus's 30-year-old Spanish striker Fernando Llorente, claims The Mirror.

    g

But speaking after the Reds win in the US overnight, Van Gaal seems to be backtracking a little. "I don't know if I want to buy a striker," he said. "I have read in the media that the striker is a surprise. No. That is not what I said. You are saying that. No. I mean something else."

    Clear as mud.

  152. Super Sciver

    Cricket

Meanwhile - as we're talking cricket - Natalie Sciver's 66 helped England to a four-wicket win over Australia in the first game of the seven-match Women's Ashes.

    g

Sciver, 22, shared a 122-run fifth-wicket partnership with Lydia Greenway (53) as England chased down 239 in the one-day international at Taunton.

An impressive 78 off 96 balls from Ellyse Perry helped the visitors to 238-9 after Katherine Brunt took 3-48.

England fell to 80-4 in response, before Sciver's highest ODI score handed the hosts victory.

  153. 'Buck up Bell'

    Cricket

Now then, Geoffrey Boycott. Not a shrinking violet is he.

And the former England batsman turned BBC pundit has not beaten around the bush about the future of under-pressure Ian Bell.

    g

According to Boycott, "it could be the end" for Bell's Test career if he does not score runs in the third Ashes Test.

Bell - who has made just 116 runs in eight innings this summer - will bat at three at Edgbaston next Wednesday as England reshuffle their top order.

"The selectors are saying, 'if you don't perform at three, you are gone'," said Boycott. "I love Ian Bell and his cricket, he is beautiful to watch, but if you don't have the mind or the defensive technique against pace bowling, you are going to get out."

  154. Will he stay or will he go?

    Football

Speaking after the game, Reds boss Louis Van Gaal said he expects Angel Di Maria to join United's pre-season tour at the weekend.

    g

However, Van Gaal refused to dampen speculation that United are in discussions with Paris St-Germain about the sale of their £59.7m record signing.

"I cannot answer that," he said. "It is a process. When we think we have to say something we will. He will come [to the US] on 25 July."

  155. Starting to (De)pay his fee back

    Football

But let's start with Man United, for the Reds were in action in America overnight and picked up a win too - beating Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes.

Memphis Depay, the striker who cost £31m earlier in the summer, scored his first goal for the club, with Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira also on target in a 3-1 win.

Sir Alex Ferguson - you might have heard him; chap in his 70s, Scottish, used to be boss - watched from the stands.

    g

United have won both games of their US tour so far, but they can expect a much tougher test when they face European champions Barcelona in Santa Clara on Saturday (21:00 BST kick-off).

  161. Morning, it's celebration time

Heard the one about the striker who's asking fans to choose his goal celebration?

    g

Take a bow Mr Adebayo Akinfenwa, aka The Beast, who is doing just that. More on him later.

Elsewhere Geoff Boycott's been talking tough about England batsman Ian Bell, £31m man Memphis Depay has scored his first goal for Man United, and Team Sky are getting increasingly cheesed off about doping whispers at the Tour de France.
