Froome prepared for Tour challenge

With only three competitive stages left in the Tour de France, leader Chris Froome believes his rivals are going to take greater risks in the race.

Coles signs new deal at Kent

Kent's fast bowling all-rounder Matt Coles has committed his future to the club by signing a long-term contract extension.

The 25-year-old Kent Cricket Academy graduate has taken 54 Championship wickets this season at an average of 22.05 with two five-wicket hauls and a 10-wicket match since returning to his home county from Hampshire earlier this year.

Johnstone to discuss Old Trafford future

Manchester United reserve goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will hold talks with manager Louis van Gaal before deciding whether to re-join Preston on loan.

The 22-year-old, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at his hometown club last year, said: "The manager here gives kids opportunities. I have been at this club since I was 10 years old so you have to look at it, speak to the right people and see what the club want from me."

Hampshire hold out for a draw

What a finish to the final County Championship game of the day with Division One bottom club Hampshire clinging on for a draw with Durham at the Ageas Bowl.

Durham seamer Chris Rushworth earlier took a hat-trick before they declared 304 runs ahead.

Hampshire were 167-9 in reply, but 20-year-old Lewis McManus and 18-year-old Mason Crane survived the final 5.2 overs - with McManus hitting the final ball for four to reach 53 not out.

Five Chelsea fans who received lengthy bans from football matches for their involvement in the Paris Metro train race row have received lifetime bans from the club.

"Vahid has a good goalscoring record this year in Finland and we hope that is something he can replicate here," boss Chris Hughton said.

Hearts have signed 26-year-old Brazilian central defender Igor Rossi Branco from Portuguese club Maritimo on a one-year contract.

Oystons ignore BST takeover offer

Blackpool's owners, the Oyston family, have not replied to the £16m offer made by Blackpool Supporters' Trust (BST) to buy the League One club.

BST set a deadline of 21 July to respond to their bid, which they said would "rescue" the Seasiders.

There have been several demonstrations against the Oyston family from disgruntled supporters during the past few months.

"This lack of response is disappointing but not in the least surprising," said BST.

Shehzad hit 12 fours and a six in his innings

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the fourth one-day international in Colombo on Wednesday to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Opener Ahmed Shehzad hit 95 off 90 balls as the tourists surpassed Sri Lanka's 256-9 in the 41st over at the Premadasa stadium, Shoaib Malik winning the match in style with his fourth six.

The fifth match will be played in Hambantota on Sunday.

August decision expected from Platini

"BBC understands Uefa president Michel Platini is likely to make an announcement on standing for the Fifa presidency in early August.

"Platini will visit Saint Petersburg this weekend for the qualifying draw of the 2018 Russia World Cup. It is believed he will hold further talks with world football leaders whilst there.

"Platini is believed to have received backing from four of the six Fifa confederations and the Frenchman is now the clear favourite to succeed Sepp Blatter in the 26 February 2016 poll.

"An announcement could come as early as next week.

"But Uefa sources believe Platini is more inclined to wait for two or three weeks before making his intentions clear.

Defender Cranie joins Huddersfield

Huddersfield Town have signed defender Martin Cranie on a one-year deal following a trial.

The 28-year-old left League One side Barnsley at the end of last season after making 110 league appearances in three seasons at Oakwell.

Serie A new boys Carpi have signed Chelsea full-back Wallace on a season-long loan deal.

Michel Platini will delay any announcement on standing for the Fifa presidency until after this weekend's 2018 World Cup preliminary draw in St Petersburg.

The 60-year-old Uefa president is the favourite to succeed Sepp Blatter in the election on 26 February after receiving the backing of four of the six Fifa confederations.

Mbemba is a composed and calm defender with amazing pace. At the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo - for whom he has 15 caps - he proved he is quick, strong and versatile and is happy to play in defensive midfield when required.

According to his first two Congolese clubs - ES La Grace and AS Mputu - he was born on 8 August, 1988 but the DR Congo FA listed his date of birth date as November 30, 1991 and Anderlecht as 8 August, 1994. The player himself thinks he was born in 1990.

Alli lands knockout blow in Spurs friendly

A little more on the Spurs friendly we told you about earlier and Dele Alli marked his first Tottenham run-out with a stoppage time penalty to give his side a 2-1 victory over Brentford in a behind closed doors match at the club's Hotspur Way training centre.

Shaq Coulthirst opened the scoring, also from the spot, Jermaine Udumaga on target for the Bees.

Toby Alderweireld also played his first match for Spurs since joining from Atletico Madrid, starting alongside fellow new boys Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier.

League One side Fleetwood Town have brought in midfielder Lyle Della-Verde on a two-year deal.

The 20-year-old was released by Fulham last month and has been with the Cod Army in Germany for pre-season.

Watford have signed Spanish midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado from Spartak Moscow on a three-year deal.

Jurado, 29, has played for both major Madrid teams in his career, Real and Atletico, and scored 19 goals in 126 La Liga appearances over six seasons.

He signed for Schalke in 2010, scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win over Bayern, before switching to Spartak Moscow two years later.

Welsh champions The New Saints face a tough task overturning a one-goal Champions League qualifier deficit against Videoton.

A late Adam Gyurcso goal gave the Hungarian champions a 1-0 win in the first leg in Oswestry.

However, TNS manager Craig Harrison believes his team can cause a shock. "If it had been 0-0 we'd need to score anyway, so nothing changes. If we want to get through we're going to have to score," he said.

Vixens get 'gorilla' off their back

It took more than eight months and a winless run of 11 matches, but Bristol Academy have finally got the "gorilla" off their back.

Vixens boss Willie Kirk says a huge weight was lifted after the Women's Super League One bottom side beat second-tier outfit Aston Villa 4-0 in the Continental Tyres Cup opener on Tuesday.

Bristol's last victory was a Champions League triumph over Barcelona last November.

"It turned into a very big monkey, if not a gorilla," Kirk told BBC Sport after his side's win at Sutton Coldfield. "You could see it was beginning to weigh them down a little."

First day at work

The Reds signed the Brazilian forward from Hoffenheim on a five-year deal for a fee of about £29m.  

Balotelli future up in the air

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli's future at Anfield is in his own hands, says Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.

Balotelli, 24, is not part of Liverpool's current pre-season tour and Rodgers offered no guarantees the striker will remain at the club.

Benteke to Liverpool latest

Paul Lambert has been speaking about his former striker at Aston Villa, Christian Benteke, whose £32.5m move to Liverpool is due to go through later on Wednesday.

Ufa midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has been given a two-match ban by the Russian Football Union after he was sent off for raising a finger to the crowd in response to alleged racist abuse at the weekend.

But Rafael says that Spartak Moscow will not be punished as the RFU committee "didn't find any confirmations of monkey chants so they deny racism in this case."

Following his dismissal the former Arsenal player questioned how Russia can contemplate hosting the 2018 World Cup when racist incidents are still occurring.

Charlton Athletic midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson has signed a new four-year deal with the Championship club.

Lewis Hamilton says he will carry Jules Bianchi in his thoughts for the rest of his career, following the Frenchman's death last week.

"Usually, so long as whoever attacks is on his own, there's no major drama. But if there's a team-mate with him, or if he could catch up with the breakaway, then that can pose a real threat."

'Prove your unique'

The French doctor who claimed Chris Froome's summit victory on stage 10 of the Tour de France was "abnormal" wants Team Sky to provide more details on their rider to prove he is "unique".

Arrests at Leeds game

Police arrested 25 fans following crowd trouble before and after Leeds' 2-1 friendly defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Austrian town of Eugendorf.

Three Leeds supporters and two police officers were injured after fighting between rival fans at the final whistle, when riot police were deployed.

Supporters from both clubs were arrested - 17 of them from Frankfurt.

Pepper spray was used to control a group of Frankfurt fans following trouble in Eugendorf town centre after the game, Salzburg police also confirmed.

'Ambushed'

France 2 put pictures of Armstrong up against the Froome climb and Brailsford was furious about that. The atmosphere with all journalists the last few days has been very, very tense.

Team Sky have released some of Chris Froome's performance data at the Tour de France in an effort to end doping speculation, with boss Sir Dave Brailsford saying he wants people "to be able to judge for themselves".

According to Boycott, "it could be the end" for Bell's Test career if he does not score runs in the third Ashes Test.
