Shaqiri setting Stoke records

In case you missed it earlier, Xherdan Shaqiri shirts have been flying off the pegs at Stoke City since his £12m transfer from Inter Milan. 

His is the fastest selling shirt in the club's history - and earlier on I plumped for Bojan as being the likely number two. 

Now I'm having second thoughts. 

What about Rory Delap? Michael Duberry? Or how many would Stanley Matthews have sold now?

South Africa coach 'does not look at colour'

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer says that his team is behind him, despite accusations he is not picking enough black players.

Peter de Villiers, the Springboks' only black boss to date, accused Meyer of taking the country "back to the late '80s"  with his team selection for Saturday's shock defeat by Argentina.

Meyer's starting XV included one mixed-race player and one who is black.

"I don't look at colour, I look at the best players," he said.

Wales to fall at first hurdle?

Former England World Cup-winner Will Greenwood believes Wales will not progress from their World Cup group.

Wales will face England and Australia in Twickenham in Group A, with the top two making it into the quarter-finals.

Greenwood, who won the Cup in 2003, says home advantage will be a deciding factor in England's favour and Australia will be too strong for Wales.

"I really don't think people can underestimate Twickenham," Greenwood told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

He does though, think that England will make at least the semi-finals...

Women's Ashes update

There are still about 20 overs left of the day's play in Canterbury but are England even going to last that long? 

Laura Marsh is the latest to fall as the home side continue to suffer - they are now 129-8, 145 runs behind Australia's first-innings total with just two wickets left...

Carneiro "harshly treated" by Mourinho

Colleagues of Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro say she "has been treated harshly" after criticism from boss Jose Mourinho for being "naive".

Carneiro, 41, treated injured Eden Hazard in the final minutes ofChelsea's 2-2 draw with Swansea.

It meant the player had to go off the pitch, leaving Chelsea with nine men following Thibaut Courtois's red card.

Carneiro looks set to lose her place on the bench for the next Premier League match against Manchester City.

Former City physio Eamonn Salmon, now chief executive of the Football Medical Association (FMA)  which represents professional medical staff in the sport, said Carneiro and first-team physio Jon Fearn's had "conducted themselves with integrity and professionalism".

Earlier we brought you the news that Barcelona's Uruguay forward Luis Suarez is on a three-man shortlist for Uefa's Best Player in Europe award for 2014-15 (that's last season).

Suarez will be up against Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.

The same 54-member panel who voted for nominees picks a winner on 27 August at the Champions League group draw in Monaco.

Brighton sign defender Hunemeier

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of defender Uwe Hunemeier from German Bundesliga 2 side Paderborn for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year contract with the Championship club.

The NFL "sucker-punch"

A quarterback for the New York Jets will not be able to play for at least six weeks after a team-mate "sucker-punched" him and broke his jaw.

Geno Smith and linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali got into an altercation inside the locker room on Tuesday, Jets Coach Todd Bowles said.

"It had nothing to do with football," Bowles said of the fight. "It was something very childish."

Enemkpali, a relative newcomer, lost his job after landing the punch.

"You don't walk up to another man and punch him in the face," Bowles said.

Xherdan Shaqiri has been speaking about his £12m move to Stoke City. 

"I am really happy to be here and I can't wait to meet my new team-mates, to go on the pitch and do what I love. 

"It was always my dream to play in the Premier League and I am absolutely sure that I have made the right move. 

"It was for me a perfect position to come here and work with Mark Hughes, a great coach. I want to help the club to grow."

Home-grown numbers "not bad"

The number of home-grown players used in the Premier League last season was "not bad" but there is room for improvement, says Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn.

Greg Dyke, the FA chairman, said recently  that English players in the top flight are an "endangered species".

Just 33.2% of the players who started games on the opening weekend were English, down from 35% last season.

"The 35% is not a bad number per se, just lower than Germany," said Glenn.

Almost 50% of starters in the Bundesliga last season were German, with Spain, France and Italy boasting figures  of 58%, 56% and 43% respectively.

Dzeko joins Roma on loan

It would be interesting to know what those "certain conditions" are exactly, but Roma are being equally cryptic. 

They say they're paying £2.8m for the loan fee, and can buy the Bosnian striker for a further £7.8m at the end of the season. 

But they also say that deal is dependent on "certain conditions". 

Like scoring loads of goals, I guess?

We've been expecting this one for quite some time but it's finally confirmed: Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko joins Serie A club Roma. 

City say the deal is for a season-long loan, leading to a permanent transfer "if certain conditions are met".

Sunderland's Johnson out for two months

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson is ruled out for up to eight weeks after suffering a shoulder injury in training. 

Manager Dick Advocaat said: “Adam will go to the hospital for a scan tonight and then we will know exactly what is wrong.

“It is a serious injury and it will be at least eight weeks.”

Everton closing on Holgate signing

Everton are close to completing the signing of Barnsley defender Mason Holgate.

BBC Radio Sheffield understands the Toffees are hopeful of signing the 18-year-old before the weekend.

Bournemouth, Manchester United and Newcastle have all been linked with moves for the player this summer.

If Holgate does make the move to Goodison Park, he would link up with former Tykes academy graduate John Stones, who joined the Premier League side from Barnsley in February 2013.

England have managed something of a stand over in Canterbury after slumping to 61-4 earlier this afternoon. 

With Lydia Greenway (14) and Natalie Sciver (0) at the crease the hosts have now reached 85 - 189 runs short of Australia's first-innings total.

Njie 'close to Tottenham move'

Lyon are close to reaching an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the transfer of Cameroon striker Clinton Njie to the London side, says the French club's president Jean-Michel Aulas.

"We are close to an agreement but there's no urgency for us," he told French radio RMC.

"We want to complete our own signings first... but I thank [Tottenham chairman] Daniel Levy for making an offer that we now regard as consistent," he added.

Consistent - that's a new one for me.

Nine-year-old girl wins big on the pools

She's really more of a tennis fan but a nine-year-old girl still managed to win £14,000 for her family playing the French football pools this weekend. 

Lucie, from Montpellier in the south of France, said she was even a little bit embarrassed to have put her home team down for a defeat to Angers - but she got that one spot on to make 12 out of 15 predictions. 

"Even if I score goals when I play with my dad I don't ever watch football on the TV," she told French paper Midi Libre. 

And her dad's reply? "Thanks to her, we're going to have a very good holiday."

'Keep trying - I've got all night'

Burnley manager Sean Dyche refused to comment on speculation linking the Clarets with a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury - despite the best efforts of a BBC reporter.

Forest chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi denied that a £4m offer by Burnley had been accepted.

When pressed for an answer to a question about Lansbury, Dyche - whose side had just been beaten by Port Vale in the League Cup - said: "Keep trying. I've got all night, I don't mind - it's a nice mild night so I'm happy to just wait it out."

If you like your beverages cold and fast, we've got some big news: Borussia Dortmund are introducing new express lanes where only beer is served.  

The 'Flugelflitzer' will "take the strain off food stands and reduce waiting times", the club say - and is just one of many changes made to the Westfalenstadion for the coming Bundesliga season.

UFC female bantamweight champion Rondy Rousey says she would defeat former five-division boxing champion Floyd Mayweather in a no-rules fight.

In a Reddit Q&A, who was also in the film The Expendables 3, said: "Floyd is one of the best boxers of all time. He would definitely beat me in a boxing match. I unfortunately don't get into 'matches'.

"I fight for a living. In a no rules fight, I believe I can beat anyone on this planet. Boxing is a sweet science with strict rules that I respect very much and aspire every day to improve at. But you said ruleless fight, and that's my honest answer."

Southampton have been in discussions with Celtic over the potential signing of defender Virgil van Dijk, BBC Scotland has learned.

No offer has yet been made but the 24-year-old Dutchman is one of many targets Saints are pursuing as they look to recruit one more central defender before the transfer window closes.

Rooney to captain GB

British Athletics names Martyn Rooney as captain of the British Athletics 63-strong team for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

The 28-year-old was only selected following an appeal.

"I'm happy that my appeal was successful," Rooney said at the time. "Now I can focus on preparing for the world championships and representing Great Britain to the best of my ability."

British Athletics performance director Neil Black said: "I feel that Martyn is the perfect person for this role as he commands the respect of all his teammates and has the invaluable experience of competing in Beijing previously."

Hartlepool unsure of Moore return date

Assistant manager Sam Collins is unsure if he is preparing Hartlepool United for Saturday's trip to York City, with boss Ronnie Moore in Spain with his ill daughter.

Collins took charge of Pools' 1-0 League Cup win at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday in Moore's absence.

"It's been not a nice few days but that win is for Ronnie and his family," Collins told BBC Tees.

'England in toughest World Cup pool'

England's World Cup-winning skipper Martin Johnson says the team's path through the toughest group in the competition's history is fraught with danger.

England face Fiji, Wales and Australia in Pool A.

"It's the toughest pool there has ever been in a World Cup and someone will be going home early," said Johnson, who captained the successful 2003 side.

"Whoever loses England v Wales, their next game becomes a must win. They'll have to beat Australia just to stay in the tournament.

Preston sign Kirkland

Championship club Preston North End have signed goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on a one-year contract. The 34-year-old rejected an offer to stay at Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the summer.

England have lost a third wicket after Heather Knight drives loosely at a Sarah Coyte full ball and finds Meg Lanning at first slip.

Brentford postpone Blues match

Brentford statement: "Brentford’s Championship match against Birmingham City will not take place next Tuesday. The match has been postponed and will now take place on Tuesday 29 September.

"The decision has been taken due to the current condition of the playing surface at Griffin Park. The club believe the best way to ensure it is at a high standard for the rest of the 2015-16 season is to relay it as soon as possible."

Greenwood pessimistic about Wales chances

Westwood signs new Villa deal

Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood signs a new five-year contract at the club. 

"I was made to feel very welcome from the moment I first walked through the door," the 25-year-old says.

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell believes his team have to start getting results or will find themselves in "a dogfight".

The Terriers lost 2-1 to League Two club Notts County in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, after losing 2-0 at Hull City on the opening day of the Championship season.

"They're good enough but they need to get going now or we find ourselves in a dogfight," Powell told BBC Radio Leeds. "We have to come out fighting and show some character."

Balzaretti to retire from football

Italy full-back Federico Balzaretti is retiring because of a long-standing groin injury.

The injury kept the Roma defender off the field for a year and a half.

"It was a difficult decision to take but I can't continue playing if I'm not at 100%," said the 33-year-old.

Balzaretti, who played 16 times for Italy, including at Euro 2012, will join Roma's coaching staff.

Enrique feels 'alienated' by Liverpool

Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique wants to stay at the club and fight for a starting place despite being "alienated" by manager Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The 29-year-old Spaniard, entering the final year of his contract at Anfield, was left out of the club's pre-season preparations along with Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini.

Enrique has been linked with a move to West Brom.

"I'm in a difficult position," said the Spaniard. "The club have alienated Balotelli, Borini and me."

Well it's looking increasingly unlikely to happen - various Spanish media outlets are reporting the 29-year-old is set to sign a new five-year contract at Madrid. 

Sports newspaper AS say it's pretty much wrapped up already, and that there'll be a presentation at the Bernabeu on Monday.

Philippe Coutinho is capable of great things at Liverpool and can play the role that Steven Gerrard played for the Premier League side, according to former Brazil international Kaka.

Brazilian Coutinho scored a brilliant 25-yard strike in the 86th minute to hand Liverpool a 1-0 win over Premier League rivals Stoke on Sunday.

"I have been a big admirer of Coutinho and he can be a very important player for Liverpool and Brazil," Kaka, who plays for Major League Soccer side Orlando City SC, told the Mirror.

Sterling predicts tight contest

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling says the Premier League title race to be a very closely fought affair this season.

"It's going to be a really tough season," said the 20-year-old winger, who made his City debut in Monday's 3-0 win over West Brom.

"Everyone has strengthened their squads and the Premier League is always hard to second guess."

"Chelsea are very strong in every department from their defence and midfield to their attack, but it should be a good game and I'm really looking forward to playing in this match," he added, with City set to play the Blues next Sunday.

Chelsea doctor to lose bench role

Jose Mourinho's comments on Eva Carneiro were inexcusable and possibly defamatory. He also said he 'knew' Hazard wasn't really hurt (read: he admits Hazard was feigning injury). So Hazard can waste time but it's 'naive' of the medical staff to treat a seemingly hurt player? Further, his comments on understanding the game and (if true) the reports of a demotion for Carneiro but only minor changes for Jon Fearn (the physio) give the impression of sexism. Unfortunately this is nothing new for Carneiro given the disgusting chants she has to endure at the Etihad, Old Trafford, the Emirates and other grounds.

This is the news Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro is set to lose her place on the bench for Sunday's trip to Manchester City after criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.

The Blues boss said his medical staff were "naive" for treating Eden Hazard during the 2-2 draw with Swansea.

Carneiro will continue to be Chelsea's first-team doctor but her role at the club will be significantly changed, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Arsenal suffer injury blow?

Another potential injury blow for Arsenal as reports in the Czech Republic suggest midfielder Tomas Rosicky could miss the next two months after undergoing knee surgery. 

The 34-year-old's agent told idnes.cz Rosicky had the operation on Tuesday - with the recovery time expected to be between four and eight weeks.

Fellow Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere had already suffered a hairline fracture to his right ankle and could be out for another six to seven weeks.

Last night the Manchester Evening News were reporting that City remain hopeful of seeing a £46m bid for the midfielder accepted by Wolfsburg. 

The German club announced yesterday that De Bruyne had missed training and was in his native Belgium on "private grounds", with the Bundesliga season set to start this weekend.

New signings need time - Wigan boss

Wigan Athletic will improve when their host of new signings settle into the club, says boss Gary Caldwell.

The Latics, who were relegated from the Championship last season, lost 2-0 to Coventry in their opening League One game and were beaten at home by Bury in the League Cup on Tuesday.

"Once it all clicks into gear, I'm sure we'll be a really exciting team that is very attack-minded team and scores a lot of goals," said Caldwell.

Australia lost the fourth Test at Trent Bridge by an innings and 78 runs

Darren Lehmann has apologised for Australia's Ashes defeat but refuted claims the players' wives or girlfriends were to blame.

Former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy was among those to suggest that allowing wives, girlfriends and children on the tour had hampered preparation.

"Some of the guys in our squad have schedules that have meant they've been at home for a total of three or four days since the Boxing Day Test last December - less than a week in more than seven months," he said.

"There is no way, as coach of the Australian cricket team, that I am going to oversee a set-up that doesn't welcome wives, girlfriends, children and other family members when our players and staff are spending that length of time travelling.

Backe named Finland coach

Hans Backe, 63, has been named as Finland's new head coach.

The Swede previously managed FC Copenhagen, which under his stewardship won three Danish championships, and acted as a deputy coach at Manchester City in 2007-2008.

He will take up his new post at the start of 2016.

FA announces £260m grassroots investment

The Football Association announces it is to spend £260m on the grassroots game over the next four years - an increase of £60m on the previous four-year period.

Chief executive Martin Glenn said the FA had identified "facilities, coaching, participation and developing the football workforce", as "four key areas" for investment.

The FA hopes the investment will help develop better players and improve training facilities. 

Nugent close to sealing Boro move

Radio Leicester's Jason Bourne: "The Leicester City striker David Nugent is close to completing his move to Middlesbrough.

"The two clubs agreed a fee of around four million pounds for the 30-year-old at the weekend.

"We understand he's on the verge of signing a three-year deal at the Riverside."

Colchester's Walker may be out for season

Colchester United goalkeeper Sam Walker could be out for the rest of the season after suffering suspected cruciate ligament damage.

The 23-year-old was carried off on a stretcher during Tuesday's 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat by Reading.

"We understand it's a cruciate ligament so that's probably the season for Sam," U's manager Tony Humes told BBC Essex.

Glasgow to host GB semi

Glasgow's Emirates Arena has been chosen as host for Great Britain's World Group semi-final against Australia, which is being held between 18 and 20 September.

GB defeated USA in an earlier round at the venue.

Bolton strikers lacked composure - Lennon

Bolton were one of several Championship clubs to exit the League Cup at the first-round stage last night.

Wanderers were beaten 1-0 at home by League One side Burton, and manager Neil Lennon pinpointed a lack of composure from his strikers - Zach Clough and Gary Madine - as a major reason for their loss.

"I can't put it in for them as much as I'd love to, so they've got to improve on their finishing pretty quickly," Lennon told BBC Radio Manchester.

Uruguay player receives damages

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has awarded "moral damages" of around $60,000 (£38,544) to a football player whose contract was suspended while he was treated for cancer.

FIFPro, the global players' union, says the ruling in favour of Sebastian Ariosa of Uruguay is "a great result".

The court said Paraguayan club Olimpia caused Ariosa "angst and insecurity" when it suspended his five-year contract in 2013 while he underwent chemotherapy in Uruguay.

CAS awarded Ariosa 7% percent of the total contract value as "moral damages.''

Wanchope loses his cool

When Paulo Wanchope dines out in the Derby area, he very rarely has to foot the bill himself.

McCormick joins FA board

Peter McCormick is appointed by Premier League clubs to represent the top flight on the Football Association board and the FA council.

He is now one of two Premier League representatives on the board, the other being Manchester United director David Gill.

McCormick is a solicitor and was acting chairman of the Premier League from March 2014 to June 2015.

Toure hits back at critics

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure says he was "unfairly" criticised last season for a perceived dip in form.

The 32-year-old scored against West Brom as City strolled to a 3-0 win in their Premier League opener.

"I'm quite surprised. Last season was not the best, but second in the table is not bad," he said.

"There has been a lot of criticism about me but it was not a bad season. Twelve goals and I won the Copa (Africa Cup of Nations) for Ivory Coast. I know what I want, I know what I have to do. I don't care what people are saying about me."

Naholo 'broken leg healed'

This is quite a story.

Apparently New Zealand wing Waisake Naholo has declared himself back in the running for a World Cup spot, despite breaking his leg on his debut against Argentina last month.

The 24-year-old was told he would be out for three months, but according to the Fiji Times, Naholo contacted an uncle in Fiji, who specialises in traditional medicine, and after treatment the injury has been healed.

The player is reportedly doing light exercises.

England keep their semi-final hopes alive with a dominant victory over Wales, who almost certainly miss out on the medal places.

Pedro has been linked with Manchester United, as the Premier League side look to replace Angel Di Maria.

IAAF suspends 28 athletes

Elsewhere in sports news, 28 athletes who competed at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships have returned "adverse findings" from retested samples, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has said.

According to the world governing body, a large majority of the athletes are retired with "very few" still active.

"The IAAF is provisionally suspending them," it said in a statement.

There are no British athletes among those with adverse doping samples.

It's the 'will he, won't he' saga that dominated the thoughts of... well... Stoke fans.

The Potters finally completed the signing of winger Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter Milan for a club-record fee of £12m, on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Switzerland international, who has 46 caps, was at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday as Stoke lost 1-0 to Liverpool. The club had pulled out of a move for Shaqiri a month earlier.

It happened in the Dutch Eredivisie when former Liverpool goalkeeper Martin Hansen scored a spectacular injury-time goal for ADO Den Haag in their opening league fixture against PSV Eindhoven.

Hansen, 25, went up for a corner with his side 2-1 down, volleying in a backheel to rescue a point.

What a night in the League Cup - seven Championship sides were knocked out by lower-league clubs!

Blackburn Rovers lost 2-1 at home to League One side Shrewsbury, while Brentford were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Oxford United of League Two.

Bristol City lost 3-1 at Luton,Nottingham Forest lost 4-3 to Walsall, while Burnley lost 1-0 to Port Vale.

What a last couple of days for Joey Barton. The 32-year-old midfielder, released by QPR in the summer, was on the verge of joining West Ham.

But following fans' protests, the club pulled out of the deal. It led to Barton recording a video message, in response.
