That is all from Sportsday for the week. Remember there is live text commentary and BBC Radio 5 live commentary of Aston Villa v Manchester United (19:45 BST) and also live text commentary of the US PGA golf - right now.

  2. What the managers say

Aston Villa v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood: "Some of these foreign boys we've gone for are better than the English ones. They have played a lot more games at a very young age. You look at the English boys, they've played five games and cost a mountain.

"We fancy ourselves against any team. You have to have that mindset."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "The key for success this season is improving in away matches. We were one of the best last season at home, third. I want to create a fortress at Old Trafford, we did that - but away we have to improve and we can improve because last year we were not good."

  4. What you might have missed...

Former England and West Ham midfielder Sir Trevor Brooking has told BBC Radio 5 live that the club did not sign Joey Barton because of the emergence of Reece Oxford and the Hammers' exit from the Europa League.

    Trevor Brooking

"They went out of the Europa League which was quite a key factor. They might not need the depth of squad because they haven't got those number of European matches in the next few weeks," he said.

"They played at Arsenal, their build up wasn't great and to win there 2-0, with Reece Oxford in midfield, was terrific.

"Suddenly you think do we need another midfielder and we must use him wisely. Priority is probably a striker and wide player."

  6. Man Utd match facts

Aston Villa v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

    • They last started a season with consecutive league victories in 2011, when they went on to take maximum points from the first five games.
    • United only had one shot on target in the opening round of fixtures, the lowest tally by any Premier League team.
    • The Red Devils are unbeaten in 14 top-flight matches played on a Friday since a 3-0 defeat at Bolton in December 1978.
    • Wayne Rooney has scored 13 Premier League goals against Villa, more than against any other club. However, he has failed to score in his last six league appearances at Villa Park.
  7. Aston Villa match facts

Aston Villa v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

    • Villa won five of their Premier League home games last season - only Sunderland and relegated Burnley fared worse.
    • They have lost 34 of their 70 league games at Villa Park since December 2011, winning on just 17 occasions and averaging exactly one point per match during that period (W17, D19, L34, Pts 70).
    • Villa have not won their opening two games of a Premier League season since 1999-00.
    • Rudy Gestede has scored 20 league goals with his head since August 2013, more than anyone else in the top four divisions.

    Steve Bower

BBC Match of the Day commentator

Having both started with 1-0 victories on the opening day, we may discover more about the new-look teams after this one.

Villa have to improve their home record this season. They have to believe they can alter their record against Manchester United in recent times in the process. For some reason it's always been a ground where United have always done well.

They'll want that to continue as they try to give themselves an early-season foundation to build on and stay as close as possible to the leaders. It will be intriguing to see how quickly the new faces on both sides can gel.

  17. Friday night lights

Aston Villa v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

    Mark Regan

    BBC WM Sport

Villa Park is expected to sell out so the atmosphere will be rocking for the first ever Premier League match to be held on a Friday night.

It's got the makings of an open attacking game - Tim Sherwood won't set out for a draw, while Louis van Gaal will also go for it. Don't rule Villa out of this one.

The signing of Adama Traore makes it 10 new faces over the summer for Aston Villa.

I spoke to Tim Sherwood about what kind of player the new man is, and the manager described him as "one of those players that plays on instinct - he doesn't know what he's going to do and he decides when he gets the ball". Maverick was another word he used.

  23. 'Wales omissions warning for England'

    Rugby Union

    Harry Ellis

Former England scrum-half Harry Ellis believes Wales' World Cup omission of British and Irish Lions trio Mike Phillips, James Hook and Richard Hibbard should serve as a warning to Stuart Lancaster's side.

England and Wales are in the World Cup Pool A and are due to meet at Twickenham on 26 September.

"To let three Lions go tells you a lot about how strong the Wales squad is," Ellis said.

"They are three top players and I think that's quite worrying for England that they are not considered good enough to make the Wales squad."

Parma went bankrupt in March with more than 200m euros (£143m) debt, although they were allowed to finish the season.

  26. Magpies still eyeing reinforcements

    Football

    Steve McClaren

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren is hopeful there will be further new arrivals during the final two weeks of the transfer window to boost the feel-good factor on Tyneside.

McClaren, managing director Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr continue to pursue other targets with QPR striker Charlie Austin at the top of the list, and the former England boss is keeping his fingers crossed.

"There are two weeks of the window to go where a lot of things can change. Will they change here? I couldn't tell you yes or no. Just at the present moment, we will go on with what we have got."

  28. Lawro's predictions v Mark Radcliffe

Aston Villa v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson

    Football analyst

Villa are going to take time to bed in their new players. It was important that they beat Bournemouth last week and after a slow start they improved in the second half, so that is all positive for them.

Manchester United won too, but they looked pedestrian in possession against Tottenham and did not create many chances.

But I am going to tip United to go to Villa Park and get a win. What Van Gaal has got is a team that does not give the opposition many chances and I think they will do enough at the other end too.

    Lawro's prediction: 1-2

Mark's prediction: Manchester United 'nil' is my favourite score so why veer from that? 1-0

    Nick Barnes

    BBC Newcastle commentator

Sunderland head coach Dick Advocaat refused to be drawn on speculation surrounding the possible signings of Adnan Januzaj or Fabio Borini.

    Adam Johnson

However, the Dutchman told BBC Newcastle that winger Adam Johnson does not need surgery and will be out for five or six weeks, rather than the longer spell initially feared.

A cagey Advocaat said he is "desperate to get a couple of players in" but in reality he needs more than two and will have to hope the club owner Ellis Short is prepared to back him in the transfer market.

Here are excerpts from the Fifa Q&A:

Whenever an incident happens on the pitch, what is the protocol in place concerning the intervention of medical staff?

Dvorak: "If a player goes down and the referee suspects an injury then he's entitled to call the medical team and the team doctor from the sideline to provide medical assistance."

Can the coach intervene at that moment?

Dvorak: "In medical terms, when it comes to medical diagnosis, the coach has nothing to say. It is at the sole discretion of the doctor and we at Fifa will always endorse that."

"Jon Fearn and Dr Carneiro will not be on the bench but that does not mean Sunday is the rest of our careers. It is my decision.

"If anyone thinks that a disagreement between two of the medical department and the manager can affect the build up to a match doesn't know football."

"His mind is not 100% there," Bosnich continues. "Romero did very well against Tottenham. Louis Van Gaal and Romero have a long relationship - as soon as he came in, it's another little shift to say De Gea is going."
