Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood: "Some of these foreign boys we've gone for are better than the English ones. They have played a lot more games at a very young age. You look at the English boys, they've played five games and cost a mountain.

"We fancy ourselves against any team. You have to have that mindset."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "The key for success this season is improving in away matches. We were one of the best last season at home, third. I want to create a fortress at Old Trafford, we did that - but away we have to improve and we can improve because last year we were not good."

Having both started with 1-0 victories on the opening day, we may discover more about the new-look teams after this one.

Villa have to improve their home record this season. They have to believe they can alter their record against Manchester United in recent times in the process. For some reason it's always been a ground where United have always done well.

They'll want that to continue as they try to give themselves an early-season foundation to build on and stay as close as possible to the leaders. It will be intriguing to see how quickly the new faces on both sides can gel.

I spoke to Tim Sherwood about what kind of player the new man is, and the manager described him as "one of those players that plays on instinct - he doesn't know what he's going to do and he decides when he gets the ball". Maverick was another word he used.

Walkden and Cho in semis

Good news coming back from Moscow where world champion Bianca Walkden and Mahama Cho of Great Britain have both reached their semi-finals at the World Grand Prix in Moscow.

Walkden will take on Turkey's Nafia Kus at around 17:00 BST.

Cho overcame South Korean Cha Dong-min 6-5 to claim a last four berth in the +80kg category.

Ludogorets to sack Ribeiro

Bulgarian champions Ludogorets are set to terminate the contract of their Portuguese coach Bruno Ribeiro following a series of disappointing results with controversial Eduard Eranosyan joining the coaching stuff.

"The management of Ludogorets began negotiations to terminate the contract of coach Bruno Ribeiro and his assistants," said a club statement.

'Wales omissions warning for England'

Former England scrum-half Harry Ellis believes Wales' World Cup omission of British and Irish Lions trio Mike Phillips, James Hook and Richard Hibbard should serve as a warning to Stuart Lancaster's side.

England and Wales are in the World Cup Pool A and are due to meet at Twickenham on 26 September.

"To let three Lions go tells you a lot about how strong the Wales squad is," Ellis said.

"They are three top players and I think that's quite worrying for England that they are not considered good enough to make the Wales squad."

No deal for Monreal

The 29-year-old full-back's contract is set to expire next summer.

Trophies won by former Serie A side Parma have been put up for auction after the club went bankrupt.

Creditors on behalf of the defunct club are selling a number of lots including Uefa Cups won in 1995 and 1999, three Copa Italia trophies, a Cup Winners' Cup and a European Supercup.

Parma went bankrupt in March with more than 200m euros (£143m) debt, although they were allowed to finish the season.

Magpies still eyeing reinforcements

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren is hopeful there will be further new arrivals during the final two weeks of the transfer window to boost the feel-good factor on Tyneside.

McClaren, managing director Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr continue to pursue other targets with QPR striker Charlie Austin at the top of the list, and the former England boss is keeping his fingers crossed.

"There are two weeks of the window to go where a lot of things can change. Will they change here? I couldn't tell you yes or no. Just at the present moment, we will go on with what we have got."

Leicestershire deducted 16 points

Leicestershire have been deducted 16 County Championship points for the offences committed by their players in matches over the last year.

The Foxes, bottom of Division Two, pleaded guilty to a charge brought by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that there had been five or more separate occasions when cricketers registered with them committed fixed penalty offences.

A cricket disciplinary commission disciplinary panel hearing at Lord's also fined the Foxes £5,000 - which has been suspended for 12 months.

Villa are going to take time to bed in their new players. It was important that they beat Bournemouth last week and after a slow start they improved in the second half, so that is all positive for them.

Manchester United won too, but they looked pedestrian in possession against Tottenham and did not create many chances.

But I am going to tip United to go to Villa Park and get a win. What Van Gaal has got is a team that does not give the opposition many chances and I think they will do enough at the other end too.

1948: Cricket great Sir Donald Bradman was out second ball for 0 in his final Test match innings. The Australian needed just four runs to finish with a Test average of 100 but, after receiving a standing ovation on his way to the crease at The Oval, he had tears in his eyes and did not see the ball properly from Warwickshire leg-spinner Eric Hollies, leaving him with an average of 99.94. He was knighted the following year.

Sunderland head coach Dick Advocaat refused to be drawn on speculation surrounding the possible signings of Adnan Januzaj or Fabio Borini.

However, the Dutchman told BBC Newcastle that winger Adam Johnson does not need surgery and will be out for five or six weeks, rather than the longer spell initially feared.

A cagey Advocaat said he is "desperate to get a couple of players in" but in reality he needs more than two and will have to hope the club owner Ellis Short is prepared to back him in the transfer market.

Burgess wins his first cap in union just 10 months after leaving league and has been selected at inside centre alongside Henry Slade despite producing his best rugby for Bath last season as a blindside flanker.

"You'd like to think there's a big game in him. We hope he's part of a good team performance and that's the main focus of all the lads," said Farrell.

A one-match ban means Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be absent against Manchester City this weekend.

The Belgium international was sent off in the second half of the Blues' 2-2 season opener with Swansea, earning a one-match ban which the club failed to overturn. Asmir Begovic is likely to deputise.

Oscar is a doubt for the match after picking up a knock in training, but Diego Costa is in line to start in attack after overcoming a recurring hamstring injury and playing the full 90 minutes last weekend.

Ogilvie and Kettings join Stevenage

League Two side Stevenage have signed Tottenham Hotspur defender Connor Ogilvie and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Chris Kettings on loan.

Ogilvie can play at left-back or centre-back, but has yet to play a first-team match for Spurs. The 19-year-old played 16 times in the Under-21 Premier League last term and has joined on a one-month youth loan.

But Wales' shining light comes in the form of 6ft 5ins 20-year-old Georgia Rowe.

Manchester United's summer signing Bastian Schweinsteiger has said he is "getting fitter" and will be in prime form in a couple of weeks.

The Germany midfielder is pushing for a first start for the club, against Aston Villa this evening, after making his debut as a substitute on the opening day of the season.

"I am fit, I am getting fitter," he told Manchester Evening News. "I had long holidays this summer and I came a little bit late to the team, and then I had a small calf injury in America, which was not perfect.

Now following a review of the video from the match, the ATP has also issued an additional fine of $2,500 (£1,601) for unsportsmanlike conduct related to a comment made to a ball person during the contest.

Australia have confirmed Steve Smith as their new captain and revealed that batsman David Warner will be his vice-captain.

Smith will also take on the T20 captaincy duties in the upcoming international against England.

"We have had a clear succession plan in place for the captaincy with Steve Smith gaining valuable experience leading the Australian Test team while Michael Clarke was recovering from injury last season," said national selector Rod Marsh.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is hoping to be fit for Sunday's Premier League clash against Chelsea.

The road to Wembley

Just 76 days after Arsenal beat Aston Villa to lift the FA Cup trophy, the tournament begins again.

It might be November before Football League clubs join the illustrious competition, but 368 non-league teams will take their first step on the long road to Wembley this weekend and BBC Sport has taken a look at some of the stories from the extra preliminary round.

So, the League Cup second round draw has been made and Everton have been drawn away to League One Barnsley. That's a potential toughie.

It's always nice to get one up on a sibling, isn't it. Jamie Murray beat younger brother Andy in their first senior competitive meeting, teaming up with John Peers to win in the second round of the men's doubles at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Jamie and Peers defeated Andy and Leander Paes 6-4 7-6 (11-9).

But at least Andy - Britain's number one - has reached the last eight of the singles, beating Gilles Muller 6-3 6-2.

What did Rory McIlroy make of his start to the defence of his US PGA title? The world number one ended the opening day one under par in testing windy conditions at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin.

"It's great to be back - I was quite nervous on the first tee," he said, completing his first competitive round since injuring his ankle in June.

"The ankle feels great, it's felt great all week. It's not an issue and I've got full confidence in it."

Baines out for three months

Look away now Everton fans because we bring you bad news on Leighton Baines' injury. The left-back will be out for at least three months after having ankle surgery.

The 30-year-old was injured in training before the season started after returning from an operation on the same ankle.

The club said on Thursday that Baines had "undergone a successful ankle operation" and is set to miss "the next 12 to 14 weeks".

Carroll set for August return?

There's good news for West Ham fans because the London Evening Standard reports that striker Andy Carroll is on course to return from injury before the end of August. The 26-year-old has not played for the club since February.

Across the Pond, Dustin Johnson has made a strong start on his return to Whistling Straits, taking advantage of an early tee time to lead at the US PGA Championship.

The American, who was given a two-stroke penalty with victory in his sights at the same course in 2010, shot a first-round 66 for six under par.

Swede David Lingmerth briefly matched Johnson's score but ended the day on five under as the wind strengthened. Late starters Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth finished on one under par.

One more thing on Manchester United before we move on to other matters. Louis van Gaal has said we must "wait and see" if Pedro signs from Barcelona.

De Gea 'not eager to play'

Making the headlines - again - is Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea. Will the Spaniard be between the sticks at Villa Park this evening? No, because he's been left out of the squad.

De Gea has apparently told club staff he was "not eager to play" before being left out of the opening game of the season against Tottenham.

"I'm not doing everything alone," said United boss Louis Van Gaal. "I have two assistant coaches and a goalkeeping coach, Frans Hoek. "Frans had a meeting with David De Gea. He fully agreed with our decision."
